Akeed records 106 rumours in November

By - Dec 01,2024 - Last updated at Dec 01,2024

AMMAN — The Jordanian Media Credibility Monitor (Akeed) documented 106 rumours circulating in November across local and international media outlets and social media platforms.

The findings, revealed in Akeed’s monthly report, underscore the prevalence of misinformation and its dominant sources, where the report noted that 15 rumours were officially denied in November, marking a slight decrease from the 20 rumours denied in October, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Political rumours topped the list, followed by social, security, and economic rumours.

Political rumours accounted for 14 incidents, representing 13 per cent of the total. Social rumours ranked second, while economic and public affairs rumours accounted for 8 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively. The health sector recorded only one rumour, at 1 per cent.

Akeed highlighted that internal sources, including social media and local news websites, generated 71 rumours, constituting 67 per cent of the total. External sources contributed 35 rumours, or 33 per cent.

Social media emerged as the primary channel, responsible for 99 rumours (93 per cent), while media outlets generated seven rumours (7 per cent).

To combat misinformation, Akeed stressed the importance of verification, where it developed a set of principles encouraging users to question the credibility of content before sharing it, particularly in sensitive contexts.

The monitor also pointed out that rumours are not confined to crises or abnormal circumstances, such as wars and natural disasters. They can also thrive in routine conditions, requiring constant vigilance to mitigate their impact.

Cassation Court upholder over 3-year sentence for drug dealer

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a November State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing a drug dealer to over three years in prison after convicting him of possessing illegal narcotics in Amman in May 2022.

The court declared the defendant guilty of obtaining illegal narcotics with the intent of selling the drugs to an undercover agent in Qweismeh Neighbourhood on May 17.

The SSC handed the defendant five years in prison for the offence of possessing illegal narcotics and ordered him to pay JD5,000 in fines.

However, the court decided to reduce the fine to JD3,500 and the prison term to three years and four months in prison to give the defendant a second chance in life.

Court documents said the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) learnt the defendant was in possession of illegal narcotics and sent one of its agents to pose as a buyer.

“The AND agent got in touch with the defendant and asked him for hashish in return for JD10,” court documents said.

When the two met, AND agents immediately arrested the suspect, court papers added.

The defendant contested the SSC’s ruling through his lawyer, who argued that the court “did not provide solid evidence to implicate his client”.

The lawyer argued that his client possessed the illegal narcotics for his personal use.

Meanwhile, the SSC prosecution office asked the higher court to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the defendant.

The higher court maintained that the SSC had followed the proper procedures in issuing the sentence against the defendant.

“It was clear to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to possessing the illegal drugs to sell in the local market,” the higher court said.

The Court of Cassation judges were Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Mohammad Khashashneh, Qassem Dughmi and Hammad Ghzawi.

Farmers in Jordan grapple with rising costs, harsh winter conditions - stakeholders

By - Dec 01,2024 - Last updated at Dec 01,2024

Stakeholders say that December marks a critical month for agricultural workers in Jordan as winter settles in, bringing with it unique challenges for farmers across the country (JT file)

AMMAN — December marks a critical month for agricultural workers in Jordan as winter settles in, bringing with it unique challenges for farmers across the country.

With decreasing temperatures and seasonal demands, farmers face fluctuating market conditions, resource limitations, and the harsh realities of their profession.

According to local stakeholders and farmers, these difficulties are further exacerbated by economic pressures, limited resources, and the long-term effects of climate change.

President of the Jordan Valley Farmers Union Adnan Khaddam told The Jordan Times, "In December, many farmers focus on winter crops such as spinach, lettuce, onions, and garlic, while others tend to citrus groves and olive trees.

"For many, the question is whether it is even worth it, but they persevere, as they have no other livelihood options," Khaddam added.

Ahmad Ziad, a citrus farm owner, said "During the cold weather, we work tirelessly and constantly monitor the weather conditions, but the financial strain is overwhelming."

"Fertiliser prices have doubled, and the cost of transporting produce to market has skyrocketed, leaving us in a constant state of debt," he added.

Female agricultural workers, a significant portion of Jordan’s farming labour force, face additional challenges.

These women are often responsible for physically demanding tasks such as planting, sorting produce, and preparing it for market.

Sereen Sharif, a local entrepreneur in Sweimeh working to promote eco-tourism, noted that while the work provides essential income for many, it comes with low wages and long hours in harsh conditions.

"For many women, this work is a lifeline," Sharif said, adding "but the physical demands and poor compensation make it a tough and often thankless job."

The event gathered representatives from 56 countries to advance joint efforts in combating corruption across borders, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

IACC Chairperson Muhannad Hijazi stressed the importance of regional and international cooperation to achieve the objectives of the Makkah Al Mukarramah Convention, calling for member states to boost their roles in crafting projects aimed at measuring corruption levels and sharing expertise under the OIC's umbrella.

Hijazi noted that addressing transnational corruption crimes requires collective and coordinated action, particularly as modern technologies enable the corrupt to evade accountability more easily.

He also highlighted Jordan's approach to combating corruption through the continuous evaluation of its national strategies.

Hijazi also pointed to the ongoing efforts to complete the second phase of the National Integrity Index, launched in late 2022, which measures the public administration's adherence to integrity standards in line with international benchmarks.

During the meeting, the IACC signed three memoranda of understanding to bolster cooperation with the anti-corruption bodies of Qatar, Lebanon, and Kazakhstan.

These agreements aim to enhance transparency, accountability, and integrity through the exchange of expertise and best practices, as well as cooperation in asset tracing, prosecution, and recovery related to corruption crimes.

The memoranda also focus on sharing information regarding criminal patterns and preventive measures, organising study visits, and developing technical cooperation programs to combat corruption effectively.

Participants at the meeting celebrated the signing of the Makkah Al Mukarramah Convention as a key milestone in fostering unified efforts within the OIC to combat corruption and promote integrity on a global scale.
