UK’s more pressing priority

Jul 29,2019 - Last updated at Jul 29,2019

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decisive victory offers opportunities for better tidings for his country, as well as anxieties and uncertainties.

The first query that comes to mind is whether he is going to be another Donald Trump in temperament, vision and style of governing?

Johnson's flamboyant and free spirit character suggests that he may very well be another Trump. The two leaders are closely tuned on domestic, foreign and ideological matters. It is no coincidence that President Trump was among the first world leaders to congratulate Johnson and wish him luck. Trump also professed that Johnson will be a "great" prime minister.

That said, the new prime minister faces several uphill battles along the way, and he is in no way out of the woods yet, neither on the Brexit issue, nor on keeping his country united. His ironclad decision to pull his country out of the EU by October 31, with or without a deal, could be just a ploy and a negotiating tactic.

Is Johnson driving a hard bargain with Brussels when he says he wants a Brexit with or without a deal, hoping that Brussels would mellow down in dealing with London and offer it a nice Brexit deal?

Deep in his heart, Johnson knows very well that his country needs a deal, as a Brexit without one is devastating to his country's unity, especially when it comes to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There are grumblings in Scotland and Northern Ireland already about the prospects of a Brexit without a deal. Keeping the UK united is a higher priority than the Brexit from the EU.

Obviously, the British people have not heard the last word from Johnson on many fronts. The true Johnson will shine through when all the dust settles down. Johnson is after all a survivalist, and he does not want to put his country on the brink of another parliamentary elections, which he may lose after all. He seeks to be another Churchill in style, demeanour and boldness.

Johnson could very well turn out to be a brilliant prime minister who knows how to leave a deep imprint on UK politics. The days ahead will either vindicate this projection or not.
