King, Erdogan discuss ties over the phone

By - Jun 10,2018 - Last updated at Jun 10,2018

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Saturday received a phone call from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a Royal Court statement said.

During the call the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and latest regional developments.

On Friday, His Majesty received similar calls from Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz and Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi

The leaders discussed ties with Jordan and issues of mutual interest, voicing keenness on enhancing cooperation in various fields.

Jordan has been receiving calls of support amid protests against economic policies the Kingdom has seen over the past ten days, which came to halt on Thursday after the government of Hani Mulki resigned and the former education minister, Omar Razzaz, was designated to form a new Cabinet.

Turning tomatoes into money: Ghor Safi women’s innovative food business

AMMAN — Often noticed for their handicrafts and textile production, the residents of Ghor Safi have come in the spotlight again for a new kind of homegrown creation: tomato and pesto sauces.

The homemade sauces came from an idea by Dalal Obaid, a local resident who realised in 2017 the agricultural potential of her area.

"When I returned to Jordan after my studies in India, I noticed the overflow of some food products like tomatoes and cucumbers in the market which led to a sharp decrease in selling prices. That made me realise that we could create some innovative items from them to boost the producers' revenues," Obaid recounted, noting that "this was also a way to help local producers further support their families".

The project includes 44 women who prepare products that include dried tomatoes, pastries, desserts and low-salt pickles in their own kitchens, Obaid, who had been working in the exports and management field at a consulting firm for 15 years, explained

"I knew that motivation was not enough and that I needed to design an organised, systematic and specialised work formula," she remembered, adding that she decided to start a professional training programme that would help local women start "on sound and solid ground". To fund the training, she applied to the USAID Jordan Local Enterprise Support Project grant programme that aims to support home-based businesses in local communities.

"For me it was about tackling the specific problem of turning tomato surplus into a product that can generate customer demand, therefore turning a cheap item into a valuable product in the market," the young entrepreneur recalled.

In 2017, Obaid launched her training programme and the women of Ghor Safi started receiving courses in food safety and hygiene where they were acquainted with the highest international quality standards.

A year later, they began producing their innovative line of tomato sauce and pesto, offering a much more valuable product on the local market.

"Pesto is produced by drying the tomatoes, frying them and softening them before adding nuts, olive oil and garlic. They then become a paste that you can add to your salads, meat or chicken to give it a wonderful flavour," Obaid, who is leading the initiative alongside the Al Etizan Consulting team, told The Jordan Times.

For its part, the ground tomato sauce is made from grinding the dried tomatoes and adding dry garlic, dry onion and dried mint along with rosemary, she continued, noting that is a "great alternative to regular tomato sauce".

"The advantage of these grated and dried products is that their taste is more enhanced," the entrepreneur stressed, pointing out that farmers and community members are the first tasters of the products, monitoring and constantly improving their sauces' concentration and flavours.

"Despite the short period of time since we have started our project, individuals and families in Ghor Al Safi have already been able to see the difference," Obaid said, highlighting that women's husbands have been the biggest supporters of the project, as well as local farmers collaborating with them by providing the fresh vegetables they need.

Fayzeh Mashaaleh and her husband Ibrahim and two of the beneficiaries of the project, who increased their family income since Fayzeh started working with Obaid.

"The work of the women in the area really improved thanks to the training they took with Dalal, especially the food safety and hygiene courses," said Ibrahim, noting "this creative and unprecedented idea enabled us to benefit from the surplus of the tomato crop and opened various production lines for the local citizens to feel the difference in terms of income."

“The advantage of the project is that the products these women manufacture in their kitchens have greatly increased the value of the surplus products we used to have in the area,” the entrepreneur explained, elaborating “for example, one kilo of tomatoes is sold for about 30 piasters. Instead of selling the surplus fresh tomatoes at such a low price, the women dry the tomatoes and transform them into pestos and other sauces. This means that now they can sell a kilo for JD3, which generates much more revenues for them, and therefore more income for their families.”

The Mashaaleh couple thanked Obaid for her "pioneering idea", noting that "all of the beneficiaries are extremely grateful for what she did". "I am so happy and proud to be part of this project," said Fayzeh, as her husband voiced his pride to see his wife having gained new techniques in cooking and food preparation.

"I think all of Jordan will benefit from this innovative project," Ibrahim said with enthusiasm.

Obaid commended the 44 ladies' "great passion and desire to succeed", citing the "many outstanding success stories these women carry with them".

Five policemen questioned over death of man in detention

By - Jun 10,2018 - Last updated at Jun 10,2018

AMMAN — Government coordinator for human rights Basil Tarawneh on Saturday said his office was following up on the death incident of a man while in detention by police this weekend.

The victim reportedly died while in a cell at the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“A special committee that was formed under the directives of the police chief decided to detain five police officers for questioning,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Tarawneh said his office was content “with the quick handling of the incident by the police”.

“The incident is being handled in the best professional manner and the investigation committee is comprised of three police judges,” Tarawneh told The Jordan Times, adding that “investigators are waiting for the government forensic report before taking the next step”.

“We were assured by the investigation committee that the matter was taken very seriously and anyone found responsible in any way will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Tarawneh stressed.

He added the government is keen on securing “the utmost human rights and dignity for its citizens and the police’s prompt action is another proof that we are always going in the right direction”.

“It is important to properly apply the rule of law because in the end it will only work to strengthen the trust between citizens and the authority,” Tarawneh concluded.

Public Security Department (PSD) Director Maj. Gen. Fadel Hmoud on Saturday said that the practices of beatings, torture and verbal and physical abuse are not in our policing, social or moral dictionaries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

“No citizen can be abused under any circumstances, the law is the only supreme and ruling power on the relationship between the PSD forces and citizens,” he said during a meeting with officials of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Hmoud stressed the need to fully comply with all the transparent instructions issued by the PSD on the need to respect the citizens and provide services to them in the best and fastest ways, in addition to using modern methods to enforce the law and avoid all forms of abuse and beating under any circumstances, especially that the law has limited the reasons for the gradual use of force, according to Petra.

AMMAN — Jordan on Saturday celebrated the 19th anniversary of His Majesty King Abdullah’s coronation, as well as Army Day and the 102nd anniversary of the Great Arab Revolt, marked on June 10, when the emir of Mecca and the King’s great grandfather, Sharif Hussein Bin Ali, led an uprising against Ottoman rule in the region.

On the occasion, the King on Friday received cables from several heads of states, congratulating him on the anniversary of his coronation, a Royal Court statement said.

His Majesty received similar cables from senior civil and military officials, congratulating him on this occasion and the anniversaries of the Great Arab Revolt and Army Day.

HRH Crown Prince Hussein received similar cables from several senior officials and officers.

Since his coronation on June 9, 1999, the King has embarked on comprehensive democratic reform in the Kingdom, giving special attention to internal and external national issues.

In particular, he has focused on improving Jordan’s capabilities as a modern country, emphasising investment in the Kingdom’s human resources and innovation as a means to combat the nationwide shortage of natural resources.

In addition to these priorities, His Majesty has been always committed to advocating the Palestinian people's right to have an independent state and safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Under the King's leadership, Jordan is working towards a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and is part of an international coalition to fight terrorism.

Throughout the past 19 years, the King has carried the banner of tolerance and coexistence, launching the “Amman Message” to portray the true essence of Islam, which is based on moderation and rejection of extremism.

In addition, the UN General Assembly adopted the King’s initiative “World Interfaith Harmony Week” in October 2010.

He also sees economic reform as a major concern, and consequently directed former prime minister Hani Mulki and his government to prepare a package of measures designed to overcome economic challenges.

Under Royal directives, the previous government led by Abdullah Ensour prepared the Jordan Vision 2025, which His Majesty described as "a long-term national blueprint that outlines the integrated framework of economic and social policies based on providing opportunities for all and serving as the base to enhance the rule of law, equal opportunity, increasing public participation in policymaking and achieving sustainable and comprehensive development".

The Kingdom, under His Majesty’s rule, took the initiative to implement much-needed political reforms, with five parliamentary elections taking place over the past 19 years.

The King has said these developments would lead to "the endgame of our process: building and developing political parties and bringing forth parliamentary government”.

The Decentralisation Law, which came into force in 2015, has been aimed at enhancing public participation in development-related decisions. The King has instructed the government at the time to issue all the necessary by-laws and instructions to implement the Decentralisation Law, stressing that political reform also requires strengthening the rule of law and implementing administrative reform measures.

The September 2011 constitutional amendments necessitated the enactment or amendment of several laws, including those that mandated the establishment of the Independent Elections Commission and the Constitutional Court.

The Great Arab Revolt marks a milestone in the country’s history as it led to the establishment of the modern Kingdom of Jordan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army was established in Maan, 220km south of Amman, shortly after the founding of the Jordanian state under the name "the Emirate of Transjordan" in 1921.

It comprised 750 personnel of gendarmerie, infantry and camel cavalry, according to Petra.

People barely buy clothes in our shops anymore, garment traders say

Shop owners say protests have harmed purchasing trend

Garment sector laments 50 per cent drop in sales since beginning of Ramadan (Photo by Osama Aqarbeh)

AMMAN — The garment traders are complaining that a 50 per cent drop in sales since the beginning of Ramadan has been harming the sector, in spite of the Eid "buying season" getting closer and the ongoing sales and promotions, Garment Traders Association President Munir Dayeh said.

"The market is witnessing an unprecedented recession, which forced around 10 per cent of the total number of shops to close down," Dayeh told The Jordan Times on Saturday, adding "traders are no longer seeking to make profits, but only to sell their items to get some cash and pay for their obligations and the high operating costs."

Representative of the garment sector at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce Asad Kawasmi said that the recession reached its peak after the announcement of the income tax draft law and during the protests period, highlighting that prices had however decreased by at least 10 per cent due to the high competition and lower demand.

"In the past 20 years, the situation has never been like that," said Samir Kilane, owner of garment shops in Hashmi area and downtown, adding "our goods are on sale around the year which sometimes reach 70 to 80 per cent off".

Kilane said that, as the poverty rates are "on the rise", all sectors are affected, not only the garment traders. He urged for the need to take "serious steps" to revive the economy.

"People have other priorities to pay for and most of the limited-income families are waiting for charity organisations to distribute clothes instead of buying them," he continued, stressing "an economy does not grow and will never do with such a situation".

Rami Ismael, another shop owner in Dahyet Al Rashid, explained: "Sometimes, an entire family visits the shop, but they end up buying one or two pieces only."

Dayeh noted that, even though imported goods have also decreased by 25 per cent compared with the previous year, the supply is "still higher than the demand".

"The sector cannot bear further deterioration and more losses, which have overwhelmed the traders, especially during the past three years. We hope that the government will intervene and take measures such as controlling online shopping and reducing the customs fees," Dayeh stressed.

Kawasmi noted that the number of shoppers started increasing slightly following the announcement of disbursing June salaries to the public employees, voicing hopes that the situation will "further improve".

AMMAN — Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, HRH Prince Ali Bin Nayef on Friday attended the 90th session of the Hashemite Scientific Council, which was organised under the theme: "Jerusalem scholars and the scientific movement in it".

This fourth session marked the conclusion of this year's councils which were held on every Friday of Ramadan under Royal patronage, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Organised by the Awqaf Ministry, the scientific council is an annual Ramadan event that features the participation of intellectuals, clerics and Sharia (Islamic law) professors from the Kingdom and other Arab and Muslim countries.

Mahmoud Habbash, Palestine Grand Mufti and an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, called for making Jerusalem a "daily concern" at schools, universities and media outlets.

He also urged making it an interest for all officials in Arab and Islamic countries.

Secretary General of the National Committee for Christian-Muslim Dialogue Mohammad Sammak reviewed attempts, procedures and threats that Jerusalem underwent from US Zionist-Christian organisations, as well as conspiracies that were woven against the holy city throughout history.

Sammak, who is also a member of the board of presidents of the World Conference Religion for Peace in New York, added that Christians have "nothing to do" with these organisations, stressing that Christians have a documented stance refusing any attempt to harm the holy city.

Mufti of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army Majid Darawsheh said that Jerusalem has always been an attraction for scholars and a representative of the true image of the nation's image.

AMMAN — A total of 1,152 refugee families in Jordan and Lebanon have been financially supported through the Zakat Fund raised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since the beginning of Ramadan, the UN agency said in a statement issued on Thursday.

However, 5,465 Syrian refugee families remain in dire need of financial assistance, the statement said, calling on all Muslims to donate their Zakat to refugee families before the end of the holy month.

A previous report by the agency showed that the bulk of cash assistance to refugee families in Jordan is spent on rent, food, healthcare and debt repayments, while in Lebanon, families prioritise food, healthcare, utility bills and transportation.

In Jordan, $2,160 can provide a total of 12 families with enough cash to cover rent, food, healthcare and debt repayment for one month, the study showed, while in Lebanon, $2,100 are enough to cover the food, rent, healthcare and utility bills of 12 families for one month.

Up to this point, UNHCR has been able to raise $1 million through its Zakat Refugee Initiative, a project launched in partnership with the UAE-based Tabah Foundation to “provide a reliable and effective way of allocating Zakat funds to eligible refugees”.

Houssam Chahine, head of private sector partnerships for the UNHCR in the MENA region, expressed that the UNHCR is “very grateful” for all the donations received so far, stressing that “these funds help us [UNHCR] to save families that are fully dependent on monthly cash assistance to survive and get out of the grip of extreme poverty”.

For his part, Tabah Foundation CEO Noureddin Harthi noted: “There are many refugee families in need in the region, and the Zakat initiative comes as a lifeline for the most vulnerable of them," adding that Tabah’s cooperation with the UNHCR is “built on the two organisations' shared values and mission to help humanity”.

The Zakat Refugee Initiative is fully Sharia [Islamic law] compliant and is backed by a total of five fatwas issued by leading Muslim scholars and institutions, UNHCR sources stated, noting that the project is “subject to strict governance standards that guarantee the transparency in the distribution of the Zakat to the beneficiaries”.

Sheikh Ali Gomaa, former grand mufti of Egypt and professor of Islamic jurisprudence at Al Azhar University; Sheikh Abdullah Bin Bayyah of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah; the Fatwa Council of Tarim, Hadramaut Yemen, the Senior Scholars' Council of Morocco and Dar al-Ifta Al Missriyah are the scholars and institutions that have issued fatwas supporting the the UNHCR Zakat initiative.
