AMMAN — The Gendarmerie Department on Tuesday confirmed that Corporal Ali Mohammad Ali Zreiqat “fell martyr” in Bahrain on Monday.

In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, an authorised official said Zreiqat was working with the joint training mission with Bahrain security forces, “which is part of a cooperation programme going on for several years”.

The Gendarmerie Department expressed its condolences over the martyrdom of Zreiqat “who passed away in the line of duty”.

Also on Tuesday, Bahrain King Hamad Bin Issa Al Khalifah sent a cable of condolences to the family of Zreiqat.

Meanwhile, Bahraini Public Security Department Director Maj. Gen. Tareq Al Hassan said that suspects were detained and others were identified and a hunt was launched to round them up.

The Jordan News Agency, Petra, quoted the Bahraini police chief as saying that Zreiqat was killed in a bomb attack as he was guarding a security camp in Damestan.

A group of rioters, the officer explained, attacked the guards with rocks and Molotov cocktails, prompting them to leave their position before the terrorists detonated an explosive remotely, killing Zreiqat instantly.

Reports said his body was brought to his hometown Zarqa for burial Tuesday.

Local and Bahraini media said responsibility for the bomb attack was claimed by Al Ashaat Brigades, a Shiite rebel group, while non-militant opposition parties condemned the terror attack.
