MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League as lowly Luton were eased aside 5-1 at the Etihad, while Newcastle thrashed Tottenham 4-0 on Saturday.

Amid a gruelling schedule, Pep Guardiola could hardly have wished for a kinder fixture in between the two legs of his side’s Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Guardiola made six changes from a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Spanish capital on Tuesday and City seemed set for a stress-free afternoon from the moment they opened the scoring after just two minutes.

Erling Haaland’s shot deflected in off the unfortunate Daiki Hashioka into his own net.

Yet, the floodgates refused to open as the English champions had to wait until after the hour mark before making the points safe when Mateo Kovacic smashed in Julian Alvarez’s cross at the edge of the box.

Haaland scored five then the sides met in the FA Cup in February.

The Norwegian had to settle for just one time this time when scored from the penalty spot for his 20th Premier League goal of the season.

Ross Barkley netted a late consolation for Luton but they have just five games left to save their top-flight status.

Jeremy Doku fired into the far corner after jinking through the Luton defence before Josko Gvardiol scored his second goal in a week after opening his City account in Madrid.

Victory takes City two points clear of Arsenal and Liverpool, who both have a game in hand, and are in action on Sunday.

Liverpool host Crystal Palace at Anfield looking to bounce back from their shock Europa League defeat to Atalanta.

Arsenal entertain Aston Villa, who moved back into the top four without kicking a ball on Saturday thanks to Tottenham’s trouncing at St. James’ Park.

Isak double

Alexander Isak scored twice, while Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar were also on target as the Magpies moved up to sixth and kept their slim chances of Champions League football next season alive.

Newcastle are 10 points adrift of Tottenham and Villa with six games remaining but have the far easier run-in.

“We’ve just got to keep doing our bit which is trying to win every game,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

“We’re hopefully returning to somewhere near our best and we’ve got to keep heading in that direction.”

Manchester United can move back above Newcastle into sixth with victory away to Bournemouth later on Saturday.

At the bottom of the table, Nottingham Forest edged one point clear of the bottom three after a thrilling 2-2 draw against Wolves.

Matheus Cunha struck twice for the visitors at the City Ground to deny Forest a vital three points after goals from Morgan Gibbs White and Danilo had put them 2-1 in front.

Brentford’s first win in 10 games pulled the Bees seven points clear of the drop zone as Ollie Arblaster’s own goal and Frank Onyeka earned a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Burnley’s chances of survival are fading fast after a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton left them still second bottom, six points adrift of safety.

African players in Europe: Milestone as Salah salvages point

PARIS — Liverpool star Mohamed Salah scored his 11th Premier League goal against Manchester United at the weekend — the first player to achieve the feat.

His late penalty salvaged a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, a result that allowed Arsenal to replace the Reds at the top of the table on goal difference with seven rounds remaining.

Before the match, Salah and Alan Shearer had scored 10 goals each against United in the most watched domestic league in the world.

Here, AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the major European leagues:

England

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

The Egypt captain equalised from the spot in the 84th minute after Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Harvey Elliott. But the 31-year-old’s 23rd goal in all competitions this season wasn’t enough to return Liverpool to the top of the table after Arsenal won 3-0 at Brighton the previous day.

Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford)

The Democratic Republic of Congo midfielder notched his ninth club goal this season as the Bees drew 3-3 at Aston Villa. Wissa’s 68th-minute tap-in from Sergio Reguilon’s pass put struggling Brentford ahead, but Ollie Watkins’ late leveller forced the visitors to settle for a point. Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo also scored for Brentford.

Germany

Serhou Guirassy (Stuttgart)

Guirassy continued his incredible scoring run in the Bundesliga this season, grabbing the only goal in Stuttgart’s 1-0 win at Borussia Dortmund, which drew them level on 60 points with second-placed Bayern Munich. The Guinea international finished off a move he helped create by side-footing in a Jamie Leweling pass from close range for his 24th goal of the campaign.

Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen)

Winger Tella may not have made it on the scoresheet, but he played a crucial role in a 1-0 win for Bayer at Union Berlin, which has them on the cusp of a first Bundesliga title. With the match scoreless and half-time approaching, Tella tore down the right flank and forced a desperate tackle from Robin Gosens. From the ensuing free-kick, Leverkusen won a penalty which was calmly converted by Florian Wirtz. Leverkusen are just one win away from the title with six games remaining.

Ihlas Bebou (Hoffenheim)

The Togo striker scored the final Hoffenheim goal in a 3-1 win over Augsburg. He capped a breakaway in the final minute by lashing an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

France

Kamory Doumbia, Steve Mounie (Brest)

Internationals Doumbia of Mali and Mounie of Benin were among the goals as Brest edged visiting Metz 4-3 in a Ligue 1 thriller to stay second, 10 points behind Paris Saint-Germain with six rounds remaining. Brest built a three-goal lead before surviving a rally from relegation-threatened Metz.

How the Premier League title race stands with seven games to go

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Liverpool blinked in the Premier League title race in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Sunday to leave Arsenal still on top thanks to their superior goal difference.
The Gunners cruised to a 3-0 win at Brighton on Saturday, while Manchester City responded to conceding early at Crystal Palace to emerge 4-2 victors.
AFP Sports looks at where each of the contenders stand and how their run-ins compare.

Arsenal — 71 points (+51 goal difference)

The Gunners are getting ever closer to a first title in 20 years.
Mikel Arteta’s men have won 10 and drawn one, away to City, in their last 11 Premier League games and have also amassed what could be a crucial goal-difference lead across that run as well.
Just under a year ago, Arsenal’s title challenge was realistically ended by a humbling 3-0 home defeat to Brighton.
This weekend the roles were reversed as the visitors strolled to victory at the Amex in a further demonstration of their development over the past 12 months.
However, a run to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years could prove a distraction and sap Arsenal’s energy.
They face Bayern Munich over the next two midweeks and will take on City or Real Madrid in the semifinals should they progress.
Tough away games at north London rivals Tottenham and at Manchester United also lie ahead, but Arsenal have reason to believe. The destiny of the title back in their own hands.

Fixtures to come:

April 14: Aston Villa (H)
April 20: Wolves (A)
April 23: Chelsea (H)
April 28: Tottenham (A)
May 4: Bournemouth (H)
May 11: Manchester United (A)
April 19: Everton (H)

Liverpool — 71 points (+42)

Liverpool suffered a case of deja vu at Old Trafford, just three weeks on from a 4-3 defeat there in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Once again, it was a case of missed opportunities and isolated moments of magic from United that may have denied their old rivals matching their record of 20 English top-flight titles.
Another tricky local derby awaits later this month away to Everton, while Liverpool face Champions League chasing Tottenham and Aston Villa in two of their final three games.

Fixtures to come:

April 14: Crystal Palace (H)
April 20: Fulham (A)
April 24: Everton (A)
April 27: West Ham (A)
May 5: Tottenham (H)
May 11: Aston Villa (A)
May 19: Wolves (H)

Manchester City — 70 points (+40)

City remain ominously poised in their quest to become the first side to win four consecutive English top-flight titles.
Kevin De Bruyne was handed the night off for Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa and showed the value of a rest as he scored twice and teed up Erling Haaland to end his goal drought at Palace.
The challenge of facing the mighty Real Madrid awaits Pep Guardiola’s men in the Champions League but they could barely have asked for a better fixture next weekend between those quarter-final ties than at home to Luton.
City appear to have the best run-in of the three contenders, but still need both their rivals to stumble down the final straight.

Man City join Liverpool at top of Premier League as Everton win

By - Apr 07,2024 - Last updated at Apr 07,2024

LONDON — Manchester City pulled level with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League on Saturday after beating Crystal Palace 4-2 as Everton secured a vital win in their bid to avoid relegation.

City’s Kevin De Bruyne netted twice and top-scorer Erling Haaland hit his 19th league goal of the season, with Rico Lewis also on the scoresheet.

The win lifts City to 70 points — behind leaders Liverpool on goal difference — ahead of Arsenal’s match at Brighton later on Saturday, where a win for the Gunners would send them top.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool face a trip to mercurial Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday in the next chapter of a thrilling three-way title race.

Jean-Philippe Mateta gave Crystal Palace a shock early lead at Selhurst Park in the early kick-off but De Bruyne levelled in the 13th minute with a curler into the top corner to quell any nerves from the visitors.

Palace carried an attacking threat but Lewis put City ahead just after half-time and De Bruyne and Haaland combined for the third.

Midfielder De Bruyne added his second with a solo effort in the 70th minute — his 100th goal for the club — to make the game safe, before substitute Odsonne Edouard scored a consolation.

City boss Pep Guardiola hailed the Belgium international, who missed five months of the season with a hamstring injury he sustained in the opening match at Burnley.

“Sometimes it’s Phil [Foden], Erling or Julian [Alvarez], today it was Kevin,” he said.

“Without him we would not be able to win this. You talk about managers but players like Kevin make this game easy.”

Everton end

miserable run

Everton went into their match against second-from-bottom Burnley desperately searching for a spark of inspiration after a run of 13 Premier League matches without a win.

They struggled to impose themselves but benefited from a huge error from visiting goalkeeper Arijanet Muric in first-half stoppage time.

Muric took too much time to clear the ball and when he did it was straight at Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the ball rebounding off the forward into the net.

The win means Everton are now four points above the relegation zone.

But the club need everything they can get as they wait nervously to find out if they will be handed a second points deduction this season for breaking Premier League financial rules.

Fourth-placed Villa, beaten in midweek by City, will rue a second-half collapse that could prove costly in their chase to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Unai Emery’s men drew 3-3 against Brentford but only after tossing away a 2-0 lead.

Villa led 2-0 moments into the second half after goals from Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rodgers but three goals in nine minutes from Mathias Jorgensen, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa turned the match on its head.

Watkins scored his second goal of the game in the 80th minute but Villa could not find a winner and they are just three points above fifth-placed Tottenham, who have two games in hand.

Carlton Morris scored a 90th-minute goal in Luton’s 2-1 win against Bournemouth — a result that leaves them in the relegation zone but now level on points with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle beat Fulham 1-0 courtesy of a late goal from Bruno Guimaraes to keep alive their hopes of European football next season while West Ham came from behind to beat Wolves 2-1.

WASHINGTON — The Boston Celtics clinched the NBA’s best record this season and home-court advantage throughout the play-offs on Wednesday with a 135-100 blowout over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Kristaps Porzingis scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Jayson Tatum added 24 points and Jaylen Brown contributed 23 points for the Celtics, who improved to an Eastern Conference-best 60-16.

Minnesota and Denver are next best and share the Western Conference lead at 53-23.

Boston have six games remaining but are guaranteed to enjoy home-court advantage throughout the playoffs as they chase an NBA-record 18th league crown.

“You learn to appreciate the process,” Tatum said. “All the while we want to hang a [championship] banner. We can’t skip steps. Winning 60-plus games and clinching the best record in the league, it’s a big deal.

“But you’re going to have to win some games on the road regardless in the play-offs to do what you want to do.”

The Celtics, who last won the NBA Finals in 2008, were back home after a 4-2 road trip. They blew open the contest by outscoring Oklahoma City 42-17 in the fourth quarter.

“Feels great,” Tatum said. “We had a long road trip, 13 days. It was definitely good to come back here, be around our fans and get a win.

“We really just picked up our intensity. That first game back after a long road trip can be kind of tough. We ended up finding our energy.

“It really showed in that second half -- we started getting stops, playing faster, knocking down shots.”

Minnesota grabbed a share of the Western Conference lead alongside defending champion Denver with a 133-85 rout of visiting Toronto, stretching the Raptors’ losing streak to 15 games.

Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 28 points while Naz Reid added 23 points and Rudy Gobert had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the hosts.

At 53-23, the T-Wolves are level with the Nuggets and a game ahead of Oklahoma City.

Injury-hit Milwaukee played without Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton and Patrick Beverley and lost to visiting Memphis 111-101.

Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 35 points to lead the Grizzlies while GG Jackson had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Memphis.

Brook Lopez led the Bucks with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Giannis Antetokounmpo added 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Lillard was out with a groin strain while Middleton has a left ankle injury and Beverley a right ankle sprain.

Lakers beat the Wizards

Anthony Davis scored 35 points and grabbed 18 rebounds while LeBron James added 25 points, nine assists and seven rebounds to power the Los Angeles Lakers to a 125-120 victory at Washington.

The Lakers, 44-33, are ninth in the West, two games ahead of Golden State in the penultimate play-in position.

Jalen Johnson posted his first career triple-double with 28 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists to spark the Atlanta Hawks over visiting Detroit 121-113.

Reserve Malachi Flynn, averaging only 5.2 points a game, scored 50 points for the NBA-worst Pistons, just off the NBA record for points off the bench, 51 by Jamal Crawford in 2019.

De’Andre Hunter had 26 points while Dejounte Murray added 24 for the Hawks, who clinched an East play-in berth and eliminated Brooklyn from play-off contention.

Phoenix’s Devin Booker scored 40 points and Kevin Durant added 32 to lead the Suns over visiting Cleveland 122-101 and into a West play-off position at 45-31.

Getting knocked down into the play-in zone were the New Orleans Pelicans (45-31), who lost at home 117-108 to Orlando, the Magic getting 32 points from Paolo Banchero and 24 from Franz Wagner.

Brooklyn’s Cam Thomas scored 27 points and rookie Noah Clowney had a season-high 22 off the bench to ignite the Nets’ 115-111 home victory over Indiana.

Bahamian centre Deandre Ayton scored 24 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead Portland over host Charlotte 89-86.

Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford said he will step down after the season. They are out of play-off contention at 18-58.

AMMAN — Hussein are in the lead 7 points ahead of Faisali as teams head into Week 16 of the Professional Football League as of Thursday.

Standings remained mostly unchanged after week 15 as teams resumed matches after a  two week break as the national team played two World Cup qualifiers  eating Pakistan 7-0 and 3-0 to move to second in Group G while the U23 team took  fifth spot  at the 5thWest Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship.

Hussein are still in the lead after they beat Ma’an 2-1. This week, the leaderswill face Wihdat who lost 2-0 to Faisali and now trail the lead by 12 points. Faisali play Aqaba who beat Mughayer Sarhan 2-1.

Ramtha scored a vital 2-0 win over Shabab Urdun next play Salt, who moved 3 spots to 6th after overcoming Sahab 2-0.

Ahli are trying to move away from the relegation zone. They were held 1-1 with Jalil and next play Mughayer Sarhan. Shabab Urdun who dropped to 7th play Ma’an who also dropped to 9th, while the two at the bottom - Sahab and Jalil - come head to head.

Just like Ramtha, who  surprised fans in 2021, when they won the League crown for the third time in their history after 39 years, Hussein seem to have the chance to grab the crown and change the usual Faisali-Wihdat dominance of the title.

So far in the season, Wihdat beat Faisali to win the Jordan Super Cup for their 15th time, reigning Pro League champs Faisali won their 9th Jordan Football Association Shield, while the Jordan Cup is still under way. Regionally, this season saw Wihdat and Faisali failing to advance beyond Round 1 at AFC Cup and Champions League respectively.

‘Tennis is in great hands’ says Sinner’s coach Cahill

By - Apr 03,2024 - Last updated at Apr 03,2024

Jannik Sinner of Italy poses with the Miami Open men’s trophy at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida (AFP photo)

MIAMI — Jannik Sinner’s third victory of the year, at the Miami Open on Sunday, will lift the Italian to number two in the world and has convinced his coach, Darren Cahill, that tennis is set for years of exciting battles at the top.

Roger Federer has retired, Rafael Nadal is battling with injuries and 36-year-old Novak Djokovic is entering the twilight of his career but Cahill, the Australian former coach of Andre Agassi, believes 22-year-old Sinner’s rivalry with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz ensures a bright future for the sport.

“He’s getting to play a sport that he loves and do it at the highest order — and he’s loving every piece of his life at the moment. So he appreciates every single moment that is happening to him,” Cahill told reporters after Sinner’s straight sets win over Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the final at Hard Rock Stadium.

“But he has also got his feet on the ground, knowing it’s just a sport. It’s just a tennis match. And beyond this, whilst he’s professional in everything he does, he enjoys his life. He’s a normal 22-year-old kid.

“So there’s a lot to learn from him, a lot of good to learn from both him and Carlos. I think they’re very similar in many meaningful ways and that’s why I think tennis is in great hands at the moment with the likes of those two and many other players coming through that are going to carry the torch through a generation that we’ve been so fortunate to sit through the last 20 years.

“It is important to have these types of sports people coming through.”

Cahill, who coached Australian former world number one Lleyton Hewitt and worked with Andy Murray, says that while the future looks bright, it would be wrong to make comparisons between Sinner and Alcaraz and the previous generation.

But he believes the new wave of talent are benefitting from the methods used by Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

“What they were able to achieve for so many years is remarkable and I don’t think we’ll ever see that domination again, no matter what,” said the Australian.

“It has been remarkable how they’ve pushed the frontier of the game and made everyone more professional and made everybody play better. What you’re seeing with the players coming through now is a direct result of their professionalism, of the teams they put together, the way they’ve tried to inch out every piece of improvement in each of their games.”

Sinner’s ‘playing a 10’

Cahill works alongside Sinner’s Italian coach, Simone Vagnozzi, as part of a large support team and those structures flow directly from the approaches taken by the “Big Three” of tennis.

“They’ve got big teams, they go from the physio to the mental coach, to a couple of tennis coaches now, to a fitness trainer,” Cahill said.

“But I wouldn’t start comparing what Carlos or Jannik or Holger [Rune] or these types of players are doing just yet to the generation prior. Because I think that’s unfair.

“They need time to establish themselves but the level is right up there and it’s a good level. But they need to win a lot more before you start comparing it to those boys.”

Cahill said there is no doubt that Sinner’s form — with three tournament wins in the opening three months of the season, starting with January’s Australian Open — is outstanding and he believes he will get even better.

“For where he is at the moment, right now, he’s playing a 10,” Cahill said. “You can’t sugarcoat it. He’s playing great and his level [in Miami] was fantastic. But he can get better.

“You evolve, you get a little bit older, a bit stronger, a bit faster, a bit smarter, all those things are going to start coming into his game. “We’ve been working on improving his serve, improving his transition game, his slice backhand to use it as a change-up shot, direction on his forehand and return of service.

“But credit where it’s due — he’s playing terrific tennis at the moment.”

LeBron hits 40 in Lakers win, Doncic has 47 as Mavs beat Rockets

NEW YORK — LeBron James delivered another epic performance on Sunday, scoring 40 points and matching a career-high with nine 3-pointers on 10 attempts as the Los Angeles Lakers rolled to a 116-104 NBA victory at Brooklyn.

James, a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and the NBA’s oldest active player at 39, made 13-of-17 shots from the floor overall and added seven rebounds and five assists in an effort that had Brooklyn fans giving him a standing ovation.

“I was feeling pretty good today, obviously, shooting the ball from the perimeter,” James said. “I just try to continually put my game where I have no weaknesses out on the floor, especially offensively. Tonight I had it going from the 3-point line.”

James achieved his 77th NBA career 40-point game to match Oscar Robertson for seventh on an all-time list topped by Wilt Chamberlain’s 271.

“I love this game. I try to put everything into the game and with it, it gives back to me,” James said.

“Anytime I’m linked with the greats — and obviously Big O was a big inspiration for me growing up, reading about his history — it’s pretty cool.”

Anthony Davis added 24 points and 14 rebounds while Japan’s Rui Hachimura had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Lakers seized a 17-0 lead and never looked back.

D’Angelo Russell scored 18 points and cracked the 10,000 career point barrier in the triumph as the Lakers improved to 42-33, just ahead of Golden State in the last two Western Conference play-in spots.

“Just extremely thankful that he packed the cape on this road trip,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said of the super-heroic display by James.

“We needed all nine of those threes. [We] kind of dropped the rope in terms of what we were doing... turned the ball over way too much, but that said, you have to just overcome these things... And we were able to do that by some huge shot-making by him.”

James wasn’t the only superstar with nine 3-pointers on Sunday.

Luka Doncic scored 47 points on 18-of-30 shooting, 9-of-16 from 3-point range, to lead Dallas over host Houston 125-107, snapping the Rockets’ 11-game win streak and stretching the Mavericks’ win streak to seven games.

Golden State kept pace with the Lakers by winning 117-113 at San Antonio. Stephen Curry scored 33 points to lead the Warriors while rookie Victor Wembanyama led the hosts with 32 points.

Jokic has triple double

Nikola Jokic posted his 23rd triple double of the season, sparking defending champion Denver’s 130-101 home victory over Cleveland.

The 29-year-old Serbian centre, a two-time NBA MVP, scored 26 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and added 16 assists for his 128th NBA triple double.

“It speaks to why he’s going to be a three-time MVP,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “[It was] him showing up and saying, ‘I’m going to do what MVPs do. I’m going to lead us to a win.’”

The Nuggets sank a season-high 21 3-point shots and clinched a play-off berth.

“We came out and really showed who we are, just getting after it defensively, rebounding, making shots. I thought we played amazing basketball,” said Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who scored 22 points.

Denver hit 50-of-87 from the floor overall (57.5 per cent) and 21-of-33 (63.6 per cent) from 3-point range while outrebounding the Cavaliers 51-28.

The Nuggets improved to 52-23, a half-game behind leader Oklahoma City in a three-team fight for the West lead.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sank the last of his 19 points on a game-winning basket with 2.1 seconds remaining to give Oklahoma City a 113-112 victory at New York.

Jalen Williams led the Thunder with 33 points while Jalen Brunson, who missed a shot at the final buzzer, led New York with 30.

Minnesota fell a game out of first with a 109-101 home loss to Chicago. DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points for the Bulls, who snapped the Timberwolves’ four-game win streak.

Paul George scored 41 points to lead the Los Angeles Clippers over host Charlotte 130-118.

Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 32 points to lead Philadelphia over host Toronto 135-120, extending the Raptors’ losing skid to 13 games.

Terry Rozier netted 27 points to lead Miami’s 119-107 victory at Washington.

NBA-best Celtics snap skid by beating Pelicans

WASHINGTON — Jayson Tatum scored 23 points to lead a balanced Boston attack in a 104-92 victory at New Orleans on Saturday, snapping a two-game losing skid for the NBA-best Celtics.

Latvian forward Kristaps Porzingis contributed 19 points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists and two steals while Jaylen Brown added 17 points for the Celtics.

Jrue Holiday had 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Boston, which avoided a first three-game losing streak this season after back-to-back losses in Atlanta.

“We want to be a hungry team no matter what,” Porzingis said. “We haven’t done anything and back-to-back losses to Atlanta is not in our DNA. It just didn’t sit right with us, so we came out here tonight and got us a W.”

The Celtics, who have clinched the Eastern Conference crown, improved to 58-16, moving closer to securing a home-court edge throughout the NBA play-offs.

New Orleans, fifth in the Western Conference, fell to 45-29, a half-game ahead of Dallas and two atop Phoenix in a fight for the last two guaranteed West play-off spots.

“We just knew we couldn’t be in cruise control,” Porzingis said. “These teams are hungry. They need these wins. Maybe we at this point of the season don’t need them as much, but still we want to come out here and compete at a high level every night.”

Porzingis was unhappy at shooting only 6-of-14 from the floor, and just 1-of-6 from 3-point range but pleased with his all-around effort.

“There are so many ways we can impact a game if things are not going perfect for us,” Porzingis said. “That’s what I did tonight. I turned up another notch and that’s what we’re going to need the rest of this regular season and then even more in the post-season.”

Boston began the third quarter on a 15-7 run to open a 74-64 advantage on the way to an 83-68 lead entering the fourth quarter and the Celtics kept the Pelicans at bay over the final minutes.

“Once we hit another gear, the game just flipped,” Porzingis said.

Derrick White, who scored 15 points, sank a 3-pointer at the second quarter buzzer to cap an 8-1 Celtics run for a 59-57 half-time Boston lead.
