Inter Milan seal Scudetto in derby thriller with AC Milan

MILAN — Inter Milan sealed the Serie A title on Monday after beating AC Milan 2-1 and creating an unassailable lead at the top of the league with their sixth straight derby victory.

Goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram gave Inter a 17-point advantage over closest challengers Milan and secured their 20th league crown with five matches of the season remaining.

Inter last won Serie A in 2021, followed by AC Milan in 2022 and Napoli last year.

For Simone Inzaghi it was the first league title as a manager and on a cold, soaking wet evening at the San Siro he strode proudly in front of a clutch of Inter’s “away” fans in the 75,000 crowd as they roared in delight and fired fireworks from the stands at the final whistle.

Milan made a fight of it in the final moments after Fikayo Tomori pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining but Inter held out to kick off a title party after a stormy ending to the match which featured three red cards.

“I feel like crying because we worked so hard, we deserve this joy,” said tearful captain Lautaro Martinez.

“It’s been wonderful but we have to keep going because we’ve already won a lot of trophies and we want to win many more.”

Inter have become the second team to win 20 Italian league titles, and will have a second star stitched onto their jersey, after Juventus who are way out in the lead with 36 league crowns.

In style

Inzaghi’s team did it style, laying waste to the rest of the division and becoming the first team to claim the title by winning the Milan derby and leaving his opposite number Pioli on the verge of the sack.

“He was struggling 14 months ago according to the media and look what he has achieved since. I am happy here, I work well and I think the team has margin for improvement,” insisted 2022 Scudetto winner Pioli.

With outgoing champions Napoli crashing and burning early in the campaign and Milan falling away in the autumn Inter raced off into the distance at the turn of the year.

Juve looked like putting up a fight but they collapsed in February just as Inter strung together a run of 13 wins which also gave them hope of repeating a deep run in the Champions League.

Inter failed in that mission as they were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid in mid-March, but by that time the domestic damage had already been done.

The future looks bright too as Inzaghi, Martinez and Italy midfielder Nicolo Barella are all set to renew their contracts while smart work in the transfer market and increased revenue have helped mitigate significant financial harm wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi will arrive from Napoli and Porto as free agents in the close season while big stars like Thuram should stay.

“Crazy feeling, crazy game. We wanted to do it for our fans and we did it. It’s my first league title and I’m very proud of it,” said Thuram.

The nominal away side on Monday, Inter were on their way to a title party in the 18th minute when Acerbi was left completely free to head home Benjamin Pavard’s flick-on.

Stormy finish

Inter should have been two ahead seven minutes later through Lautaro Martinez who lost his footing when Federico Dimarco’s perfect cut-back fell to the Argentina striker.

And his strike partner Thuram was equally at fault for Inter not increasing their lead seven minutes before the break as he shot a great chance just wide after being set up by Nicolo Barella.

But shortly after half-time Thuram made up for that miss with a brilliant individual goal which took his tally for his debut Serie A season to 12.

France forward Thuram collected Alessandro Bastoni’s long pass on the left and eventually cut inside before drilling home at Mike Maignan’s near post.

Yann Sommer did well to keep out Theo Hernandez’s well-struck shot as Milan fans let go a barrage of flares in the stands.

The resulting smoke mixed with the persistent rain to create an misty atmosphere around the San Siro, and just as Inter looked set to see the match out Tomori made sure it would be a grandstand finish when he headed home on the rebound.

Nadal signs up for 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin

By - Apr 23,2024 - Last updated at Apr 23,2024

PARIS — Rafael Nadal will represent Team Europe at the Laver Cup in Berlin this September in what could be one of the final events of the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s career, organisers announced on Monday.

Nadal, who turns 38 in June, has said he expects this to be his final year on tour after struggling with a hip injury that sidelined him for virtually all of 2023 as well as the start of this season.

The Spaniard played doubles with Roger Federer at the 2022 Laver Cup as the Swiss star made a tearful farewell to the sport at the team competition.

Nadal will join compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev as Europe attempt to win back the Laver Cup under coach Bjorn Borg from September 20-22.

“I am very happy to be playing Laver Cup in Berlin for Team Europe,” Nadal said in a statement.

“I have some really special memories from my Laver Cup experiences, including all the emotions from London two years ago playing alongside Roger for the last time.

“At this stage in my career I really want to go out there and make the most of every opportunity I am given.”

Nadal made a brief comeback in Brisbane in early January, but missed the Australian Open and spent another three months out after he felt a hip problem resurface.

He returned to action at the Barcelona Open last week but lost in the second round of a tournament he has won 12 times.

The former World No.1, whose ranking has tumbled to 512, has not won a title since claiming the last of his record 14 French Open crowns two years ago.

Team World at this year’s Laver Cup will again be coached by John McEnroe, with Australian Alex de Minaur so far joined by US duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the line-up.

Jordan reassesses U-23 Asian Cup Round 1 exit

By - Apr 23,2024 - Last updated at Apr 23,2024

AMMAN — The national U-23 football suffered an early exit at the 6th AFC U23 Asian Cup currently under way in Qatar, after a disappointing performance that left officials and fans puzzled and upset.

Jordan finished last in Group A after holding Australia 0-0, losing to Qatar 2-1 before going down 4-1 to first time Asian Cup qualifiers Indonesia , which earlier lost 2-0 to Qatar and beat Australia 1-0 to finish second in the group behind the hosts, who held Australia 0-0 on the last day of group matches.

Fans anticipated Jordan would score a big win over newcomers Indonesia, to qualify to the quarterfinals and keep hopes alive for a semifinal spot that would possibly advance them to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. However, the team looked in disarray and lost their mark, failing to score, as Indonesia even netted in an own goal as Jordan finished bottom of the group with Qatar and Indonesia advancing to the quarters.

After the senior national team finished runner-up at the 2023 Asian Cup in February, fan expectations were high as most U23 players are stars in Jordanian league clubs, hoping to emulate the success of their seniors.

Coach Abdullah Abu Zame’h who has come under fire for the team’s below par performance said he bears “full responsibility” for the early exit, nothing that players had given it their all in the first two matches, but played bad in the last encounter.

Observers criticised Abu Zame’h for his choice of lineup, especially sidelining the team’s star goalie Antwan Awad, who excelled at the 5th West Asian Football Federation Championship where the squad finished fifth. Awad was touted by many as Jordan’s next star goalie, reminiscent of now retired goalie Amer Shafie’. The lineup also missed star striker Omar Salah, who was on duty with Qatar’s Wakrah Club in the local league.

Kolkata beat Bengaluru in IPL thriller after Kohli’s dismissal drama

By - Apr 22,2024 - Last updated at Apr 22,2024

KOLKATA — Kolkata Knight Riders survived a late charge by Royal Challengers Bengaluru batsmen to win by one run in an IPL thriller after Virat Kohli’s angry outburst at his dismissal on Sunday.

Bengaluru conceded 222-6 after electing to field first at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens with Phil Salt smashing 48 off 14 balls and skipper Shreyas Iyer hitting 50.

Needing 21 to win in the final over by Mitchell Starc, Bengaluru’s number 10 Karn Sharma hit the Australian left-arm quick for three sixes before being caught and bowled.

Wicketkeeper Salt then ran out Lockie Ferguson on the last ball despite a wide throw by the fielder as Bengaluru were bowled out for 221.

Bengaluru slipped early in their chase when Kohli, who made a seven-ball 18, fell caught and bowled off Harshit Rana.

But the former India captain looked confident the high full-toss was above his waist as the umpires checked for a no-ball.

TV umpire Michael Gough declared it out after technology suggested the trajectory of the ball dipped below the waist of the batsman, who returned furious after exchanging words with the on-field officials.

“It was crazy. Rules are rules, Virat and myself in that space thought the ball was higher than his waist,” skipper Faf du Plessis, who was with Kohli at the other end when the drama unfolded, said.

“You always find one team happy and the other not so with such decisions.”

The drama did not help Bengaluru in their chase as the bottom-placed side in the 10-team table slumped to their seventh loss in eight matches.

Earlier Kolkata started strongly with Salt’s explosive knock as the England wicketkeeper-batsman smashed seven fours and three sixes.

Fast bowlers Yash Dayal and Cameron Green took two wickets each to dent Kolkata’s top and middle-order but Iyer kept calm to raise his fifty in 35 balls. He fell after a 40-run stand with Rinku Singh, who hit 24.

Andre Russell, who made 27 off 10 balls and Ramandeep Singh, who hit 24 off nine, finished with a flourish in an unbeaten stand of 43.

Russell then turned up with his pace bowling as he took three wickets and fellow West Indian Sunil Narine took two to dent the chase.

England batsman Will Jacks, who made 55, and Rajat Patidar, who hit 52, attempted to set up the chase in a 102-run third-wicket stand, which was broken by Russell.

Ruud defeats Tsitsipas to win ‘biggest title’ in Barcelona

BARCELONA — World No.6 Casper Ruud defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 6-3 to win the Barcelona Open on Sunday, the biggest title of his career.

The Norwegian earned revenge after his defeat by the Greek world number seven in the Monte Carlo Masters final last weekend.

Ruud, a three-time Grand Slam runner-up, had won 10 titles at 250 level with the 500-ranked clay-court event in Barcelona his 11th career triumph.

“For me it means a lot, this is my biggest title that I ever won in my career, it’s something I’ve chased for a long time already,” Ruud told Teledeporte.

“I’ve never won a 500 before or a 1000, I’ve been to a few finals but always came up a little bit short.

“I didn’t start great during the match but luckily I was able to come back in and play really well in the end of the first and the second set.”

The 25-year-old leads the tour with 29 wins this year but had lost in three finals before wrapping up his first title of 2024 when Tsitsipas, who lacked his usual spark, went long.

“The last six, seven months I’ve taken a few steps in the right direction in my game and I’m glad it’s paying off,” added Ruud.

Ruud conceded a break in the opening game, which Tsitsipas consolidated for 2-0, giving the chance of a repeat of his first-set collapse in the Monte Carlo final.

However, Ruud stayed calm and broke back in the sixth game with a passing shot the Greek could not control.

The Norwegian brought up two set points at 6-5 up, clinching it with a break when Tsitsipas erred at the net.

‘Too good’

Two-time Grand Slam runner-up Tsitsipas slapped a forehand into the net to concede the first break of the second set and Ruud then held to open up a 4-1 lead.

Tsitsipas saved two break points in the sixth game to give himself a chance of a comeback, but could not match Ruud’s energy after two draining three-set matches in his run to the final.

Ruud’s 91-minute victory ended a 10-match winning streak for Tsitsipas.

“I wasn’t playing my best tennis this week in Barcelona... throughout the whole week I didn’t feel like my shots had the same effect as they did in Monte Carlo,” said Tsitsipas.

“Today it felt like I didn’t have the mental capacity to even fight. Even if I wanted to push myself to fight, Casper was just too good today.”

Tsitsipas blamed the Catalan clay for taking the edge off his shots but said the courts at the Madrid Open where he will compete next week are a better fit for his game.

“The environment in Madrid has shown in the past that it suits me and it’s a place I can play well if I’m in the right mindset and committed to the game,” he added.

Coventry’s Robins plots Man Utd downfall in FA Cup semi

LONDON — Mark Robins scored the goal that helped launch Manchester United’s era of dominance. Now he is plotting to deepen their misery in the FA Cup semifinal on Sunday as Coventry boss.

The 54-year-old scored against Nottingham Forest in the third round of the competition in 1990, a goal that turned out to be a turning point in the history of United and was widely credited with saving Alex Ferguson’s job.

Robins also scored the winner in the semifinal against Oldham and United went on to lift the cup, the first of a cascade of trophies under Ferguson, who oversaw their last Premier League title win in 2013.

The former forward, who came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, played just 61 times for United but he has a special place in the hearts of the club’s fans.

Now he has another chance to influence the history of United by heaping the pressure on Erik ten Hag, who has had a dismal second season in charge.

Despite their woes, United will be firm favourites at Wembley to progress to a final against Manchester City or Chelsea, but the result is far from a foregone conclusion.

United are winless in their past four matches since their dramatic 4-3 quarter-final victory against Liverpool, with their hopes of Champions League football next season all but over.

The good news for Ten Hag’s men is that 1997 FA Cup winners Coventry have themselves stuttered in recent weeks, losing three of their past four games to slip off the pace in their bid to reach the Championship play-offs.

But Coventry will almost certainly get opportunities against a United team who concede a remarkable number of chances, with in-form striker Ellis Simms and Haji Wright posing a goal threat.

‘Top players’

Robins believes United’s problems are overblown and they remain “the biggest club in the world”.

“People, pundits, are talking in a derisory way about Manchester United and what they’re doing, how they’re performing,” he said.

“For people who are talking about Manchester United are this or that, or they concede lots of shots — you’re talking about a team that is full of talented players, top international players.

“We know they are clearly favourites to win this game, by a million miles, simple as that.”

Coventry are bidding to become the first second-tier club to reach the final since Cardiff in 2008.

Robins has done a remarkable job since returning for a second stint in 2017, taking the club from the fourth tier to the brink of the Premier League last season — they lost to Luton on penalties in the Championship play-off final.

That success has come against the background of a tumultuous spell at the club, who were effectively homeless for many years, sharing facilities with Birmingham City as recently as 2021.

They have already beaten Premier League side Wolves on the road to Wembley and Ten Hag pointed out that they could easily be a top-flight side themselves.

“We know the manager, a former United player, striker, his long period there, he’s doing a fantastic job there,” he said. “So, we know a lot about them.

“Of course they are dangerous, they are in the semifinal. It’s logical.

“Last season, they were that far away [a small margin] from being promoted to the Premier League. So they do a fantastic job over there.

“We have seen the game against Wolves, in the quarter-final, the mentality in the team is fabulous, so we have to play to our best levels.”

Barca find pride despite another Champions League collapse

By - Apr 18,2024 - Last updated at Apr 18,2024

Paris Saint-Germain’s French forward #07 Kylian Mbappe scores his team’s third goal from the penalty spot during the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg football match between FC Barcelona and Paris SG at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Barcelona on Tuesday (AFP photo)

BARCELONA — Barcelona woke up with a familiar sinking feeling on Wednesday, another Champions League hangover, after Paris Saint-Germain thrashed them 4-1 at home to eliminate them in the quarter-finals.

After a string of painful European exits the five-time champions extended the list, meaning their wait to lift the trophy again will stretch to at least a decade, although this time around Barcelona can find shards of hope and pride among the wreckage.

Leading by two goals in the tie after their 3-2 win in Paris and Raphinha’s early strike, the outcome hinged on Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo’s red card after 29 minutes that left his team unable to cope with the quality of PSG’s attackers.

Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha and then Kylian Mbappe’s brace helped PSG rout Barcelona and progress 6-4 on aggregate, cutting short the Catalans’ revival, snapping their 13-match unbeaten run.

Madrid-based media were gleeful, celebrating Mbappe’s role in the knock-out, ahead of his expected move to the Spanish capital in the summer.

“Mbappe kills Barca,” ran the headline in AS. In Catalonia the focus was instead on Araujo’s red card after 29 minutes which turned the tide in PSG’s favour.

“Dismissed from Europe,” wrote Diario Sport, while Mundo Deportivo said it was a “lethal red”.

Beyond the taste of defeat from being dusted up by Mbappe on home soil, and despite the ugly-looking scoreline, there were differences.

When Barcelona threw away huge leads against Roma and Liverpool in 2018 and 2019, mentally they had caved.

That same fragility was on show in 2020 when Bayern Munich hammered them 8-2, and the years since have somehow been more ignominious.

PSG thrashed them 4-1 in the last 16 first leg in 2021 in a match which was barely a contest, while in the subsequent two seasons they failed to escape their group.

In this campaign Barcelona battled well against Europe’s best sides and were it not for Araujo’s dismissal, might have progressed.

“We are a club, a team in construction, constructing something that could be fruitful and beautiful,” Xavi told reporters.

“We’ve competed against top level teams, Porto, Napoli, PSG, and we’ve been better — at least until certain decisions, or circumstances that we cannot control.

“From these situations is when you learn most, unfortunately, in life, and in football too.”

‘Back stronger’

Although PSG had more of the ball and were pressing Barca well, with the brilliant Bradley Barcola making inroads down the left, the hosts had defended solidly until Araujo’s red card.

“Today playing with 10 against 11 is practically impossible,” said Xavi.

“I’m very proud of the fans, we’ve got a bit of the excitement and hope back in the Champions League — the club will be back, stronger still.”

Xavi will not be, he says, having decided in January to leave at the end of the season. Despite rumblings that he might change his mind following the team’s dramatic improvement, so far he has not.

Although Mbappe’s 89th minute strike turned PSG’s triumph into a rout, this was not a night on which Barcelona were exposed.

Araujo’s mistake in bringing down Barcola and Joao Cancelo’s defensive errors cost them, while young defender Pau Cubarsi, 17, did his best to hold the fort after that.

Lamine Yamal, 16, helped set up Raphinha brilliantly for the first goal but was sacrificed after Araujo’s red card, leaving Barcelona without oxygen in attack.

In those two young talents, along with Pedri and injured duo Gavi and Alejandro Balde, Barcelona have the potential to come back strongly.

The only embarrassment came from Xavi’s fit of pique which saw him sent off, and his insistence on criticising a referee he described as “very bad”.

And a handful of Barca supporters who threw stones at the team’s own bus upon arrival, mistaking it for PSG’s.

Otherwise, as they dust themselves down, Barcelona will consider this season’s Champions League campaign evidence they are returning to Europe’s elite.

Whether they can establish themselves there permanently is another matter, given their financial woes and no clear plan for Xavi’s replacement next season.

Silva says double treble an ‘inspiration’ for Man City

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Bernardo Silva says an unprecedented double treble is an “inspiration and motivation” as Manchester City prepare to host Real Madrid on Wednesday with a place in the Champions League semifinals at stake.

Last season, Pep Guardiola’s men became just the second club in English history to win the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup — 24 years after neighbours Manchester United achieved the feat.

City drew the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with 14-time European champions Real 3-3 at the Bernabeu last week.

As the finishing line of the 2023/24 season approaches, they are two points clear at the top of the Premier League with six games to go and face Chelsea in the FA Cup semifinals this weekend.

Silva told reporters on Tuesday he was not surprised by City’s relentless success but said there was still a long way to go.

“Obviously it is an inspiration and motivation because we know how well this team has done since I’ve been here — this is my seventh season,” he said. “We want to create that legacy.”

The Portugal attacking midfielder added: “We want to win another Premier League to do six in seven years and to do four Premier Leagues in a row.

“We want the Champions League twice in a row... and if we can do that and two trebles in a row that no one did, that would be a legacy so that’s definitely motivation, knowing that it’s very, very difficult.

“Because in one week we could be out of all the competitions but we’re fighting for it and we’re going to do everything to be a step closer to that goal.”

City are playing Real in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third successive season.

After defeat in 2021/22, Guardiola’s side demolished the Spanish giants last season with a stunning 4-0 second-leg victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola cautioned City were “far away from hypothetical dreams” as he prepared to face Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

“There are six games [in the league],” he said. “We have a lot of difficult games home and away with opponents, we have, they have.

“It’s just one game at a time. That means Madrid tomorrow, what you have to do to beat them, and step by step,” explained the City manager, who made his name as a player and coach with Real’s arch Spanish rivals Barcelona.

“I started to think of the treble when we beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final last season... but the success for me this season is that we are still there.

“So after winning the treble, still being in that position with four, five, six weeks [to go] is hats off, incredible.”

Lyon come back to win against Brest in 16th minute of injury time

By - Apr 16,2024 - Last updated at Apr 16,2024

Lyon’s English midfielder #98 Ainsley Maitland-Niles celebrates after scoring a goal during the French L1 football match beetween Olympique Lyonnais and Stade Brestois 29 at the Groupama Stadium in Decines-Charpieu, near Lyon, on Sunday (AFP photo)

LYON — An Ainsley Maitland-Niles penalty 16 minutes into second-half added time gave Lyon a stunning 4-3 win against Brest on Sunday, pushing the home team up to within two points of the European spots.

It was a topsy-turvy affair in which the lead switched hands three times before Lyon eventually emerged victors well beyond the original allotted period of added time to stun second-placed Brest at the Groupama Stadium.

Corentin Tolisso opened the scoring before Steve Mounie and Romain Del Castillo struck in the space of seven minutes to give Brest a 3-1 lead but Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolas Tagliafico and Maitland-Niles hit back in the final 20 minutes to grab all three points for Lyon.

Pierre Sage’s side sit seventh and, after an appalling start to the Ligue 1 season, now have a realistic chance of qualifying for European football next term.

The defeat leaves Brest still in second place but 10 points off leaders Paris Saint-Germain and one point ahead of third-placed Monaco, both of whom have a game in hand.

“We’re being taken for fools. It’s a difficult evening but we’ve been through others this season already,” bemoaned Brest coach Eric Roy, who was angry his team were not awarded an early penalty for a handball appeal against Lyon’s Jake O’Brien.

“We’ve been dealt a few blows by unfavourable decisions but that’s football today.”

Brest failed to clear a set-piece and Tolisso took advantage, controlling the bouncing ball before turning and lashing a left-footed finish past goalkeeper Marco Bizot in the 18th minute.

Mounie struck back for Brest, cancelling out Lyon’s lead on the hour mark with a firm header back across goal following Del Castillo’s whipped free-kick from deep.

Del Castillo then netted twice in three minutes to send Brest into a 3-1 lead.

The first came in the 64th minute courtesy of a curling free-kick from inside the “D” that Anthony Lopes got a hand to but could not prevent from going in.

Kamory Doumbia then set up Del Castillo’s second with an intelligent pull-back that the attacker swept into the goal from just inside the box.

The two-goal lead lasted only two minutes as Lacazette volleyed home on 70 minutes after more poor Brest defending from a set-piece.

Defender Tagliafico completed the come-back 11 minutes from time with a driven finish into the far corner.

Both sides finished with 10 men apiece after Tagliafico and Pierre Lees-Melou saw red for an altercation in the 86th minute.

Lyon claimed for a penalty deep into injury time after the Brest ‘keeper cleaned out Lacazette, injuring the Lyon captain.

After a lengthy VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot and Maitland-Niles made no mistake from 12 yards to claim all three points for Lyon in the 16th minute of injury time.

Daylight for Nantes

An injury-time winner gave Nantes a precious victory away to Le Havre as Antoine Kombouare’s side went three points clear of the 15th-placed hosts and five clear of Lorient in the relegation play-off spot.

Abdoul Kader Bamba fired home three minutes into injury-time at the end of the second half to give a Nantes a crucial 1-0 victory.

“Le Havre could have won... we were able to push our limits and snatch three points out of nowhere,” said Nantes coach Kombouare.

The result leaves Le Havre two points ahead of Lorient with the 16th-placed side having played one less match.

Clermont picked up a point at home to Montpellier following a 1-1 draw but remained rooted to the bottom of the Ligue 1 table and six points from safety.

Muhammed Cham put the home team ahead going into the break with a penalty five minutes into first-half added time, before Tanguy Coulibaly levelled matters for Montpellier in the 56th minute.

Jordan plays Australia in U23 Asian Cup opener

By - Apr 14,2024 - Last updated at Apr 14,2024

AMMAN  —  The national U23 football squad faces Australia at 4:00pm on Monday in its opening match at the 6th AFC U23 Asian Cup in Qatar– a qualifying tournament to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Jordan played two friendlies this week before finalizing their lineup losing 1-0 to China and drawing Vietnam 0-0.  The team is still hoping star striker Omar Salah, who is on duty with Qatar’s Wakrah Club in the local league, will be allowed to join the national team lineup.

The Kingdom is eyeing a spot at the Olympic Games for the first time as three teams will qualify to the Olympics while the fourth will play a play-off to advance.

Jordan will be playing in Group A alongside hosts Qatar, Indonesia and Australia.

Group B includes Japan, Korea, UAE and China;

Group C includes Saudi Arabia, Iran, Thailand and Tajikistan;

Group D includes Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Kuwait and Malaysia.

The Kingdom is competing at the U23 Asian Cup (previously the Asian Championship) for the 6th time with their best performance 3rd in 2013. They reached the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2020 and were eliminated from the first round in 2018 and 2022.

Australia came in third in 2020 while Qatar was third in 2018, and Indonesia is competing for the first time. Previous champions are Iraq 2013, Japan 2016, Uzbekistan 2018, Korea 2020, Saudi Arabia 2022.

Last week, Jordan overcame Iraq to take fifth spot at the 5th West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship in Saudi Arabia.  Jordan beat Thailand to qualify to the 5th spot match after losing to Saudi Arabia in a dramatic, disappointing penalty shootout in their opening match. Korea beat Australia on penalties to win the title, while Saudi beat Egypt for third place.

The U23 squad hopes to emulate the success of the senior national team who finished runner-up at the 2023 Asian Cup which ended in February. It was Jordan’ս 5th time at the competition with their previous best performance reaching the quarterfinals in 2004 and 2011.
