Vettel gets Ferrari off to strong start in testing

BARCELONA — Ferrari made a strong start to Formula One’s pre-season testing on Monday with four-times world champion Sebastian Vettel, saying he could not have hoped for a better day after setting the fastest time and doing the most laps.

The Italian team won six of 21 races last year, finishing overall runners-up, and hope the new SF90 car can end Mercedes’s five-year stranglehold on both championships and their own decade-long wait for a title.

Vettel set the quickest lap of one minute 18.161 seconds on a sunny morning at the Circuit de Catalunya, his time on the C3 medium tyres already quicker than anything set during the weather-hit first four-day test of 2018.

He completed 169 laps, equivalent to two-and-a-half race distances at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit.

“Unbelievable,” Vettel told reporters. “The car was working really well, we had no issues slowing us down. We actually completed the programme just the way we wanted.

“First impressions yesterday [when the car had a brief run for filming purposes] were already very good and strong and the same today. It seems that the car is working, I feel comfortable... I certainly got enough laps today.”

The German had been nearly two seconds faster than the best of the rest, despite saying he felt a bit rusty after the long winter break, until McLaren’s new Spanish signing Carlos Sainz closed that gap in the afternoon with a 1:18.558 effort on softer tyres.

Sainz, stepping into the shoes of departed compatriot Fernando Alonso, was the only driver other than Vettel to break the 1.19 barrier.

Five times world champion Lewis Hamilton shared the work at Mercedes with team mate Valtteri Bottas, who did the morning session in the silver W10 before handing over.

Bottas was eighth fastest with Hamilton ninth, the pair completing 150 laps between them on harder tyres than the Ferrari, with mileage more important than outright speed as teams got to grips with their new cars.

Verstappen fourth

“You need to be disciplined because we are all keen and looking at lap times, and obviously you want to be quick and on top of the leaderboard at every single session, but it’s not the purpose of the test,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

“It’s to go through all the parts that you want to look at and what the data and sensors tell you. But yes, I’ve seen the time... definitely the Ferrari has been going strong this morning.”

Red Bull, now powered by Honda after their split from Renault, managed 128 laps with Dutch driver Max Verstappen in action and fourth fastest.

Alfa Romeo, the renamed former Sauber team, had 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen in new overalls after leaving Ferrari and completing 114 laps after an early trip into the gravel that brought out the first red flag of 2019.

The Finn was fifth fastest.

Russian Daniil Kvyat was slowest in the Honda-powered Toro Rosso in the morning, but moved up to sixth after lunch with the bottom place taken by Daniel Ricciardo for Renault in the afternoon.

The Australian, who has moved from Red Bull, shared duties with teammate Nico Hulkenberg and the pair put in 109 laps between them.

Only nine of the 10 teams appeared on track, with struggling Williams failing to get their car ready on time and not expecting to test until Wednesday at the earliest.

Durant claims MVP, Team LeBron tops Team Giannis in All-Star Game

CHARLOTTE — Kevin Durant scored 31 points and won MVP honours after outdueling Giannis Antetokounmpo to lift Team LeBron to a 178-164 win Sunday night in the 2019 NBA All-Star Game.

In the “First in Flight” city, players showed up Sunday ready to launch. Team LeBron attempted 90 3-pointers (hitting 35) and the teams combined for 167 tries from deep.

Durant helped put the game away for Team LeBron with a 3-pointer with two minutes left for a 171-160 lead. Kyrie Irving made a leaning floater and Durant hit a 15-footer from the wing to seal it.

“It’s cool to be out there with some of the best players to ever play the game, and to win an MVP here in front of my family and friends is pretty sweet,” said Durant, who also took home All-Star Game MVP honours in 2012.

Antetokounmpo scored a game-high 38 points on 17-of-23 shooting and drew raves from his peers, Durant included.

“He’s got potential through the roof. He’s still producing at an elite level, and it’s scary to see how far he can keep going,” Durant said. “His game is rounding into shape. He’s still getting better, but he’s leading top five, top three MVP candidates right now at 20. How old is he, 23? To be that young and already at the top of the class as one of the elites in the game, it’s a joy to watch his progression.”

Just before Durant’s closing stretch, James shook off 76ers forward Joel Embiid for a corner 3, and on the next trip, pounded home a one-handed slam on a lob from Irving that extended Team LeBron’s lead to 168-158.

As the teams traded long-distance daggers and mixed in the occasional lob off the glass, Durant connected on a pair of 3-pointers from the right side to give Team LeBron a 161-153 lead at the five-minute mark in the fourth as shots started to fall short and handles were less certain.

Stephen Curry brought the Spectrum Centre to its feet at the final buzzer, catching the ball off a hard bounce from himself and throwing in a reverse jam. He did the same with a four-point play early in the fourth — knocking down a 3 from the right wing as Warriors teammate Klay Thompson of Team LeBron pushed him to the floor.

“Any possession I was going to touch the ball with him guarding me, I was going to shoot,” Curry said of facing Thompson. “I definitely sold the call. If I was going to hit any of the 23 shots I took, that was going to be it.”

All-Star teammate DeAngelo Russell added a 3 of his own, staking Team Giannis to a 148-142 lead with 8:54 left in the game.

76ers guard Ben Simmons gave Team LeBron the lead 132-131 with 36 seconds left in the third quarter, closing what had been a 95-82 deficit at halftime. Team Giannis led by 20 in the third.

Damian Lillard’s 25-footers on consecutive possessions pulled Team LeBron even at 127-all, but Russell Westbrook put Bradley Beal on skates on two straight trips for easy layups at the rim.

Thompson drained a 3 from the corner in front of the Team Giannis bench to pull Team LeBron to within 120-115 with 4:30 left in the third quarter, and Beal followed with a 3-pointer of his own off a turnover to cut the advantage to 120-118.

Played above the rim in spurts, the game threatened to become a full-fledged 3-point contest. The first half consisted of 81 3-point attempts — 29 successful — between the teams.

Antetokounmpo led all scorers with 20 in the first half. He was on a dunk-a-minute pace to start the game. In the opening seven minutes, he had 16 points to fuel Team Giannis to a 36-22 edge, while assisting on 3-pointers by Bucks teammate Khris Middleton on three of four possessions.

“Previously, my first and second All-Star, I think I was kind of nervous,” Antetokounmpo said. “This one I was a little bit more relaxed. I had my name on that MVP until the third quarter, and they got hot and took it away from me.”

Curry, the de facto player host because of his local roots, got on the board with 5:32 left in the first half and was 2 of 7 at halftime. He finished 6 of 23 from the field.

Extra credit

Honorary All-Stars Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade checked into the game with 58 seconds left in the first quarter. Nowitzki splashed a 3-pointer from the right wing on his first offensive possession, and drained another from the left wing on the subsequent possession, giving Team Giannis a 53-37 advantage entering the second quarter. He added a third at the 9-minute mark in the second quarter and scored nine points on 3-of-3 shooting in 3:58 in the opening half.

“Thank you to the commissioner and to the NBA for allowing us to be on this stage once again,” Nowitzki said on the court between the third and fourth quarters, as every player from both rosters surrounded the veterans.

Wade said, “We want to thank each and every last one of these players. The game is in great hands. ... Thank you guys for this opportunity.”

James, who slammed home an off-the-glass alley-oop from Wade, was thrilled to share the court one last time with his former teammate as Wade hits the home stretch of his final NBA season.

“It meant everything,” James said. “...It’s been a bittersweet moment for me with him. The bitter part is obviously this is the last time being on the same floor together and playing the game we love so much, and obviously all the memories we have, both as competitors, as teammates, so on and so on.

“...And then the sweet part of it, seeing him be able to go off on his own terms, saying when he’s done and nobody forced him out or did anything of that nature. He’s able just to hang it up when he was ready to hang it up and be at peace with it all. So that’s real sweet of it.”

Halftime show

J. Cole was the star attraction and halftime performer at Spectrum Centre, and team captain James led a locker room exodus to sneak back onto the court to watch the show.

Lillard, who has collaborated with rapper 2 Chains and said he “chopped it up with J. Cole” on Saturday, said he told the coaching staff he was going to go watch Cole’s set one way or the other.

“I was going no matter, what,” Lillard said.

Korda keeps it in the family to win Australian Open

ADELAIDE — Nelly Korda added to an amazing family tradition of winning top titles Down Under by claiming the LPGA Australian Open by two shots in Adelaide and celebrating with a scissors kick on Sunday.

The World No. 16 American has been the form player of recent months, and has now scored two wins and two other top three finishes in her last five events.

In carding a 17-under-par 271, holding off South Korean challenger Ko Jin-young, Korda joined her father, sister and brother in being crowned an Open champion on Australian soil.

Dad Petr got the ball rolling by winning the Australian Open tennis Grand Slam in 1998, beating Marcelo Rios and celebrated with his trademark scissor kick.

Her sister Jessica then won the Australian Open golf in 2012, duplicating her father’s celebration, as did brother Sebastian when he took out the Australian Open tennis boys’ title last year.

Not to be outdone, Nelly also nailed the “Korda Kick” after her final round 67.

Just minutes after tapping in a par putt at the 18th hole, she was handed a phone and her elder sister was looking at her through Facetime.

Korda put it in context: “I’m finally a part of the club.

“She was pretty much screaming congratulations, she was so happy for me. I mean this win was really special for my family,” she added.

“I think there’s something in the air here, we love coming Down Under.

“I just got off the phone with my Dad and he said ‘well, congratulations, you’re part of the Korda Slam now’.”

Korda was the overnight leader and held her nerve despite a bogey on the 15th to beat Ko by two and Taiwan’s Hsu Wei-ling by five.

Thailand’s World No. 1 Ariya Jutanugarn finished 15 adrift.

Korda headed to Adelaide’s Grange Golf Club on the back of her first LPGA victory at the Taiwan Championship last October, before a second place finish at the Tour Championship in Florida.

She started her 2019 campaign in a similar vein, finishing third at the Tournament of Champions last month, also in Florida.

Australian mare Winx wins 30th successive race

By - Feb 16,2019 - Last updated at Feb 16,2019

SYDNEY — Australian racehorse Winx added another mark to her storied career in what is expected to be her final season when she won her 30th successive race in the Apollo Stakes at Royal Randwick in Sydney on Saturday.

The bay mare, who had not raced since winning her fourth Cox Plate last October, clinched the Aus$250,000 1,400-metres Group Two race by two lengths to Happy Clapper in front of a massive crowd to extend her own record of consecutive victories by an Australian horse.

Black Caviar is the next best Australian horse with 25 successive race wins, 15 of which were Group One victories. She retired in 2013 undefeated. “She showed how good she is,” Winx trainer Chris Waller said after the victory, in which jockey Hugh Bowman eased off once the horse hit the front with about 300m to run.

“And that’s what everyone wants to see.” Waller has already said that Winx would be retired in the first half of 2019. Her next race would be in two weeks at the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick. She has won the 1,600-metre weight-for-age race for the last three years.

The seven-year-old has won a world record 22 Group One races in succession and accumulated almost Aus$23 million ($16.43 million) in earnings. She has won 34 of her 40 career starts. “Just very proud”, an emotional Waller added.  “I can’t say anymore than that. It’s great for racing.”

D’Angelo Russell took over in the third overtime, scoring 14 of his 36 points, and the short-handed Brooklyn Nets outlasted the host Cleveland Cavaliers for a wild 148-139 victory on Wednesday.

Russell began the game by missing 10 of his first 11 shots, but he was 6 of 6 in the third overtime and finished 13 of 30 from the floor.

After the Nets forced a third overtime on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by DeMarre Carroll, Russell made a handful of plays to help the Nets snap a four-game road losing streak in their last game before the All-Star break.

Cleveland’s Jordan Clarkson scored a game-high 42 points, hitting 7 of 17 3-point attempts.

Bucks 106, Pacers 97

Giannis Antetokounmpo produced 33 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists for his fifth triple-double of the season as Milwaukee rallied for a victory over Indiana in Indianapolis.

Malcolm Brogdon scored 17 points and Khris Middleton added 15 as Milwaukee won for the 14th time in their past 16 games. The Bucks (43-14) own the best record in the NBA heading into the All-Star break.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 20 points for the Pacers, who had a six-game winning streak halted. Domantas Sabonis recorded 14 points and nine rebounds.

Nuggets 120, Kings 118

Nikola Jokic had 20 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists, and he tipped in his own miss with 0.3 seconds left to give host Denver a win over Sacramento.

Paul Millsap finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Isaiah Thomas scored eight points in 13 minutes during his Denver debut. The Nuggets won despite coach Michael Malone and guard Malik Beasley being ejected. Beasley finished with 21 points before getting tossed.

Buddy Hield had 25 points and Harrison Barnes finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Kings.

Trail Blazers 129, Warriors 107

Damian Lillard scored 29 points and Portland used a late 16-0 run to blow away visiting Golden State.

Jake Layman added 17 points off the bench as eight players scored in double figures for the Trail Blazers, who snapped Golden State’s five-game win streak.

Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry each scored 32 points for the Warriors, who had won 16 of their previous 17 contests. Golden State played without centre DeMarcus Cousins and key reserves Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston to give them some rest.

Celtics 118, Pistons 110

Jayson Tatum led six Boston players in double figures with 19 points as the home team ended Detroit’s four-game winning streak.

Gordon Hayward contributed 18 points and eight assists, while Al Horford supplied 17 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Jaylen Brown had 17 points and seven rebounds, Marcus Smart added 16 points and five assists, and Marcus Morris chipped in 11 points.

Timberwolves 121, Rockets 111

Jeff Teague produced a double-double while Karl-Anthony Towns led a dominant performance in the paint by Minnesota, which used a balanced scoring attack to thwart James Harden and Houston in Minneapolis.

Rookie Josh Okogie provided a spark by scoring 16 points and playing energetic defence on Harden, who still extended his streak of 30-point games to 31 with 42 points, matching Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in NBA history. Harden has recorded 22 40-point games this season.

Teague paced seven Timberwolves in double figures with 27 points and added a game-high 12 assists. Towns paired 25 points with a team-best nine rebounds. Chris Paul added 16 points and eight assists for Houston while Kenneth Faried chipped in 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Heat 112, Mavericks 101

Dwyane Wade played his final game at longtime nemesis Dallas and made it a memorable one with a game-high 22 points, and Miami rode a dominant third quarter to a victory.

Wade, 37, led the Heat past the Mavs in the 2006 NBA Finals. Five years later, Dallas and Dirk Nowitzki repaid Wade by winning the Finals in six games on Miami’s home floor.

After Wednesday’s game, Nowitzki, who is also nearing the end of his career, exchanged jerseys with Wade. Nowitzki, 40, who has yet to officially announce that this, his 21st season, will be his last, finished with 12 points in 17 minutes.

76ers 126, Knicks 111

New York erased much of a 26-point, third-quarter deficit but could not complete the comeback against visiting Philadelphia, who extended the Knicks’ franchise-record, single-season losing streak.

The Knicks have dropped 18 straight, two shy of the franchise’s all-time record, a 20-game streak that spanned the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. The skid is the longest in the NBA since the Memphis Grizzlies dropped 19 straight last season.

Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Tobias Harris scored 25 points, his top total in four games since being acquired by the 76ers on February 6. Allonzo Trier scored 19 points to lead an impressive performance by Knicks reserves, who accounted for 74 points.

Raptors 129,

Wizards 120

Pascal Siakam scored 19 of his career-best 44 points in the third quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds as Toronto defeated visiting Washington and entered the All-Star break with a six-game winning streak.

The Raptors trailed by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, but scored 44 points in the period to take a 10-point lead entering the fourth. OG Anunoby had 10 points in the third quarter and finished with a career-best 22 points for Toronto, which was without Kawhi Leonard because of a sore left knee.

Bradley Beal led Washington with 28 points and 11 assists, Jeff Green added 23 points, and Jabari Parker had 22 points and nine rebounds.

Bulls 122, Grizzlies 110

Otto Porter Jr. scored a career-high 37 points on 16-for-20 shooting, and Chicago pulled away for a win over visiting Memphis.

Robin Lopez contributed a season-high 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting for the Bulls, who won for only the fourth time in their past 22 games. Lauri Markkanen finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double in the past nine games.

Memphis lost for the second consecutive game after falling short by one point to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. Avery Bradley led the Grizzlies in scoring for a second consecutive contest as he finished with 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

Clippers 134, Suns 107

Lou Williams scored 17 of his game-high 30 points in the first half as Los Angeles built a big lead on visiting Phoenix and coasted to a victory.

The win was the Clippers’ 12th straight over the Suns dating to April 2016. Phoenix, led by Kelly Oubre Jr. with a season-high 28 points, lost their 15th in a row and has dropped 11 straight on the road.

Los Angeles scored its second-most points of the season.

Shabab Urdun hope to maintain league lead

By - Feb 13,2019 - Last updated at Feb 13,2019

AMMAN — Teams head into Week 13 of the Jordan Professional Football League with Shabab Urdun topping the table following an interesting start to Leg 2 of the season.

The 2018/19 football season kicked off with league champs Wihdat beating Jordan Cup champs Jazira in the 36th Jordan Super Cup. League titleholders Wihdat lost to Kuwait Club 3-2 in the 2018/19 AFC Champions League (ACL). Jordanian teams have never before made it past the ACL preliminary round. In the 2017/18 edition, Faisali were eliminated, while Wihdat were knocked out in 2019, 2017, 2016 and 2015, and Shabab Urdun were eliminated in 2014.

Last season, Faisali  won the Jordan Super Cup and Wihdat won the Jordan Football Association Shield. Jazira won the Jordan Cup.

The win was the fourth consecutive and 11th in 12 games for the Thunder. The Trail Blazers took their third loss in four games despite getting 31 points from Damian Lillard.

Rockets 120, Mavericks 104

Hampered by a strained left shoulder, James Harden nearly had his streak of consecutive 30-point games end before coming alive down the stretch as host Houston defeated Dallas.

Harden finished with a game-high 31 points on 9-for-23 shooting and rounded out his stat line with eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

The Rockets relied on a collective effort to build a lead against Dallas, with four others scoring in double figures, including guard Gerald Green, who poured in 19 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Luka Doncic posted 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to pace the Mavericks.

Cavaliers 107,

Justise Winslow had 15 points, and James Johnson scored 14 for the Heat.

Bucks 112, Bulls 99

Giannis Antetokounmpo returned from a one-game rest to score a game-high 29 points, leading Milwaukee to a victory at Chicago.

Antetokounmpo produced his fifth straight game with 29 or more points, a stretch during which he has averaged 33.6 points per game. Eric Bledsoe (19 points) also helped the Bucks win their six straight on the road.

Zach LaVine had 27 points for the Bulls, who lost their 11th consecutive home game.

Timberwolves 130, Clippers 120

Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Minnesota ended a four-game losing streak with a win over Los Angeles in Minneapolis.

Minnesota’s Derrick Rose returned after missing the past three games with an ankle injury and scored 22 points off the bench. The Timberwolves’ Andrew Wiggins sat out due to an illness.

Lou Williams scored a season-high 45 points off the bench, including 21 in the fourth quarter for the Clippers, who went 3-3 on their six-game road trip.

Pacers 99, Hornets 90

Myles Turner led a balanced attack with 18 points and eight rebounds, and the Indiana beat Charlotte in Indianapolis for their sixth straight win.

Wesley Matthews started for the Pacers after being signed on Sunday, and he finished with eight points in 30 minutes, hitting two key 3-pointers in the last four minutes of the game.

Kemba Walker scored 34 points to lead the Hornets. Walker has scored 30 or more in five straight games, which ties a franchise record set by Glen Rice.

DeMarcus Cousins made two tie-breaking free throws after retrieving a Kevin Durant missed 3-pointer with 5.4 seconds remaining Sunday night, allowing the Golden State Warriors to survive a 3-point-shooting assault by the Miami Heat for a 120-118 victory in Oakland, California.

The game marked the final Oakland appearance by Heat standout Dwyane Wade, who contributed 10 points, six rebounds and nine assists to a remarkable Heat effort.

Kevin Durant led all scorers with 39 points. Klay Thompson backed Durant with 29 and Stephen Curry had 25 for Golden State, who won its fourth straight.

Josh Richardson recorded season-highs in points with 37 and 3-pointers with eight for the Heat, who were coming off a narrow loss at Sacramento on Friday. Dion Waiters also had season-bests in points (24) and 3-pointers (six) for the Heat, the only team in the league with a winning record on the road and a losing record at home.

Kings 117, Suns 104

Rookie Marvin Bagley III scored a career-high 32 points as host Sacramento coasted past Phoenix.
