Jordan Motorfest launches motorsport season

By - Mar 09,2019 - Last updated at Mar 09,2019

AMMAN — Motorsport fans were given a treat on Friday when the 2019 season was launched at the Jordan Motorfest in the Dead Sea Service Park, according to the Jordan Motorsport Media Service.

Featuring the opening rounds of the National Speed Test and Drift Championships held back-to-back, a big crowd witnessed some of the fastest and most skilful Jordanian drivers, who did not let them down with a full day and evening of fuel-induced thrills and spills.

The day was launched by the opening round of the Jordan Speed Test Championship which welcomed a bumper entry of 51 drivers. Husam Salem, stormed to victory in an impressive one minute 18.21 seconds, finishing 2.38 seconds ahead of Ihab Al Shurafa, in second, and 2.52 seconds clear of Mohammed Tayseer, in third.

Ameer Nassif and Shaker Jweihan were fourth and fifth respectively. It provided a fast-paced prelude to the Drift event which saw last season’s top two finishers switch positions to set the scene for an absorbing season ahead.

Last year’s Championship runner-up Raafat Haroun took Friday’s opener, closely followed by reigning champion Mohammed Al Foqahaa in second with Mohammed Noufal completing the podium places. Anas Al Helo and Mjahed Baytamoni completed the top five.

The day provided a fitting opener to a record number of events this year organised by Jordan Motorsport. Next up is the opening round of the 4x4 Championship on March 15.

F1 promises a vintage season

LONDON — Lewis Hamilton is braced for his biggest challenge as he chases a sixth Formula One title, and Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari sense this could be the year they finally turn the tables on Mercedes.

The 21-race championship revving up for a fresh start in Melbourne next week is already showing the hallmarks of a classic.

Hamilton, a global superstar as much at home hanging out with celebrities at fashion shows as lapping a race track, has won 51 of the last 100 Grands Prix for Mercedes and four of the last five championships.

While he can expect to add to his tally of 73 race wins, 18 behind Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91, the balance of power may be shifting away from Brackley and towards Maranello.

“This is going to be the toughest battle yet... their pace is very good at the moment,” the Briton said after suggesting in pre-season testing that Ferrari could be as much as half a second ahead.

Mercedes, seeking to become the first Formula One team to take six successive title doubles, will throw everything at Ferrari, who can afford none of the mistakes of last year.

There are plenty of alluring storylines, from familiar faces in different overalls to youngsters stepping out into the spotlight and those, such as Poland’s Robert Kubica with Williams, returning after fearing their F1 careers were over.

A new Honda-Red Bull alliance could reward a more mature Max Verstappen, now in his fifth season but still only 21, while former partners Renault have taken smiling Australian Daniel Ricciardo with them.

Racing Point are starting over, their Force India days consigned to history, with Canadian Lance Stroll joining the team his father Lawrence now owns.

Good omens

Ferrari fans can see good omens, aware that Schumacher had to wait five years to win a title with the Italian team and that fellow-German Vettel, a four times champion with Red Bull, has reached a similar stage.

Vettel also left preseason testing in Barcelona with the fastest lap time.

Ross Brawn, Formula One’s managing director for motorsport who masterminded Schumacher’s championships and also led Mercedes as well as winning titles with his own eponymous team, is among those feeling excited.

“I think we’ve got a vintage season coming up,” he told reporters.

“We’ve got all these elements — Charles Leclerc, Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari under different management, Mercedes will be very strong, we’ve got the new regulations which I think will close the field up a bit...

“I think the performance and reliability of Honda seems a big step up. And then we have a fascinating midfield. All pretty tight and impossible to call, but still seemingly a bit of a gap between the front and midfield.”

Monaco’s Leclerc, 21, is Ferrari’s youngest race driver since 1961 and replaces Kimi Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion, who has moved to the Alfa Romeo team previously known as Sauber.

Ferrari have a new boss in Mattia Binotto, replacing Maurizio Arrivabene in a move that has lifted what many saw as a climate of fear hanging over the team.

“Clearly there was some friction in the team between Maurizio and Mattia, it wasn’t smooth. It wasn’t an easy environment last year,” said Brawn.

“If you’re going to beat Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes, you need to be on top of everything.

“I have a feeling this year will be stronger for them... there’s a calmness about the team, and the car looks good, so I think they’ve got every chance this year.”

The new regulations have changed the front and rear wings, aimed at making it easier for cars to get closer and overtake, but lap times are unlikely to be much changed.

Formula Two champion George Russell makes his debut at struggling Williams, while Lando Norris steps up at McLaren and Alexander Albon at Toro Rosso — all British-born but the latter racing for Thailand.

The season ends in Abu Dhabi on December 1, the latest finale to a season since 1963.

PSG perplexed as Champions League run ends in familiar failure

Paris St Germain’s Champions League exit has left the club perplexed and searching for answers but there will be no knee-jerk reaction to fire coach Thomas Tuchel after their latest European failure, club President Nasser Al Khelaifi said.

The French champions blew a 2-0 advantage in their last-16 second leg match against Manchester United in Paris on Wednesday, crashing out on away goals after being beaten 3-1 at the Parc des Princes.

PSG have spent a fortune on assembling a team capable of winning Europe’s elite club competition, but have failed to get past the quarter-final stages since being taken over by big-spending Qatar Sports Investments in 2011.

“I’m very disappointed with the result and the game. I don’t understand how we lost,” Khelaifi said. “We won 2-0 there. Here in Paris we lost 3-1. We gave them everything to win. It was easy for them. I don’t understand.”

PSG appointed Tuchel in May in the hope the uncompromising German would further their quest for European glory, and Khelaifi said the club would not take any decisions over his future in the heat of the moment.

“I trust the coach... but it’s not because we lose a match that we have to act now,” the president was quoted as saying by French sports newspaper L’Equipe.

“We must make decisions with a cool head but this is not the moment. We want to calm down.”

The defeat sparked emotions ranging from anger to despair from members of Tuchel’s squad.

Brazil international Neymar, who was injured for both legs, lashed out at the video assistant referees system after United won a late penalty.

His compatriots, club captain Thiago Silva and Marquinhos, offered a more measured perspective, stressing the need for the team to reflect on the defeat.

“We have to go away and think, like we do every year,” Marquinhos said. “We have to think about what’s working and not working so that we can come back stronger.”

United’s hierarchy should confirm interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment as permanent manager this month instead of waiting until the end of the season, former club captain Gary Neville has said.

Solskjaer has revitalised United since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December, with the team’s victory at PSG offering the most compelling evidence, yet, that he is the best man for the job.

Neville made his comments before kickoff, citing former United striker Solskjaer’s stellar record as interim boss, which now stands at 14 victories from 17 games in all competitions.

“The form guide says it all,” the former defender told Norwegian broadcaster Viasport. “I’ll be surprised if Solskjaer is not awarded the job during the international break [in March].

Solskjaer has also helped United salvage their season on the domestic front.

The team are now fourth in the Premier League and playing the sort of thrilling attacking football that was last seen at Old Trafford when Alex Ferguson was in charge.

“The performances are very good,” Neville said. “The fans are loving it. It’s been a sensational three months and I think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will get given the job.

“He’ll probably be the King of Norway, the President of Norway, the Prime Minister of Norway as well!”

In the other match of the night, Porto converted a penalty awarded following a VAR review three minutes from the end of extra time to beat AS Roma 3-1 and reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Wihdat, Faisali play to top league leaderboard

AMMAN — Jazira have regained the lead ahead of Week 16 of Jordan Professional Football League kicking off on Thursday.

The leaders beat Aqaba 4-1 to climb back to the top spot which they held throughout leg 1. Faisali moved up to 2nd after a 4-0 win over Salt, who dropped to fifth, while Shabab Urdun, who held the lead for two weeks, dropped to third after losing to Wihdat 2-0.

The upcoming week will see the most anticipated match of Wihdat taking on Faisali on Thursday, with the result having a direct effect on eventual standings as they begin to take shape.

Hussein moved up to 6th after they beat Sarih 3-0, while Ramtha moved up two spots to 9th after they beat Ahli 3-1. Baqa’a remained 8th despite beating That Ras 2-0 ahead of their match against Ramtha.

The week’s other matches will see Hussein play Aqaba, Jazira take on That Ras, Shabab Urdun meet Sarih while Ahli play Salt, who have now lost two consecutive matches.

The 2018/19 football season kicked off with league champs Wihdat beating Jordan Cup champs Jazira in the 36th Jordan Super Cup.

Last season, Wihdat won the league for a record 16th time since they joined in 1980. Jazira lost two competition finals conceding the 35th Jordan Super Cup to Faisali and the Jordan Football Association Shield final to Wihdat. Jazira finished runner-up in the league but made club history by winning the 38th Jordan Cup final after they last won the Jordan Cup in 1984.

Since the league kicked off in 1944, Faisali are record 33 time winners.

The Bucks shot just 36.8 per cent from the field and were 12 of 42 from behind the arc. Milwaukee All-Star Khris Middleton sank only 1 of 13 shots while scoring six points.

The Bucks led 91-81 after Bledsoe split two free throws with 8:52 left.

Phoenix made a charge and later used a 9-0 run to take the lead.

Dwyane Wade scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as host Miami won consecutive games for the first time since January, defeating Atlanta.

Josh Richardson added 19 points, and Justise Winslow added 18 for Miami, who finally beat Atlanta after losing the first three games of this season’s four-game series. The Hawks fell just short of what would have been their first 4-0 sweep of Miami since 1990-91.

Vince Carter, 42, led Atlanta with 21 points and made a season-high seven 3-pointers. Carter surpassed Jamal Crawford for sixth place in NBA history in terms of career 3-pointers, ending the night with 2,199. Crawford has 2,195 treys. James Harden scored 42 points before fouling out and the Houston Rockets extended their winning streak to five games with a 115-104 victory over the host Boston Celtics on Sunday.

Before being whistled for his sixth foul with 1:44 left to play, Harden staved off a furious Boston rally with a driving layup and a 3-pointer over two defenders that extended the lead to 112-100. The Celtics, once down 71-43, scored the opening 10 points of the fourth quarter and had cut the margin to nine on a Marcus Smart (18 points) second-chance basket at the 4:40 mark.

The Celtics rallied behind their reserves, with Jaylen Brown posting 15 points and six rebounds off the bench to lead the charge. Boston recorded a 31-9 advantage in bench points.

Eric Gordon matched his career high with eight 3-pointers and scored 32 points to complement Harden, who was 6 of 18 on treys. Chris Paul added 15 points and 12 assists as Houston, who finished 21 of 51 on threes, improved to 12-0 this season when Paul records double-digit assists.

Kyrie Irving led the Celtics with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Al Horford added 19 points and six boards. Jayson Tatum chipped in 12 points for Boston on his 21st birthday.

Scoring bursts came with ease for the Rockets, starting with their 10-0 run to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. Houston parlayed six Boston turnovers into 10 points and a 10-point lead entering the second, and in that period Harden and Gordon continued to fire away from beyond the arc.

Harden (23 points) and Gordon (20) matched the Celtics by combining for 43 first-half points, with Gordon sinking 5 of 6 threes.

The Rockets’ 3-point proficiency keyed their 65-43 halftime lead, as was their corralling of Irving, who scored 14 first-half points, but attempted only five shots. The Rockets drained 10 of 24 treys while the Celtics finished 1 of 13 from deep by the intermission.

Thunder 99, Grizzlies 95

Russell Westbrook scored 22 points, including two big shots in the closing stretch, to lead Oklahoma City past visiting Memphis.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Thunder, the team’s first since an 0-4 start to begin the season, and kept them tied with Portland for third place in the Western Conference after the Trail Blazers won at Charlotte earlier in the day.

Avery Bradley scored 27 points to lead the Grizzlies, who have lost six of their last eight.

Pistons 112,

Raptors 107 (OT)

Portland won for the sixth time in their last seven games. Jeremy Lamb scored 23 off the bench to lead the Hornets.

Wizards 135, Timberwolves 121

Bobby Portis had 26 points and 12 rebounds, Bradley Beal scored 22 points and host Washington defeated Minnesota.

Reserve Jabari Parker added 22 points for Washington, which had lost five of six.

Karl-Anthony Towns led the Timberwolves with 28 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, his first sub-30 point effort in four games. Derrick Rose scored 18 points off the bench.

Clippers 128, Knicks 107

Landry Shamet made four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes as Los Angeles went on to rout visiting New York.

Shamet finished with 21 points, all on 3-pointers, and Danilo Gallinari added 20 for the Clippers, who were beginning a stretch of eight consecutive games at the Staples Centre. The Clippers will be listed as the visiting team on Monday night when they return to their home floor to face the rival Lakers.

Hawks 123, Bulls 118

Alex Len scored a season-high 28 points and made two key free throws in the final seconds as visiting Atlanta hung on to beat Chicago.

Len picked up the scoring slack for the Hawks, who were without two starters and saw point guard Trae Young ejected in the third quarter. Len was 9 of 18 from the floor and made five 3-pointers to go along with nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Lauri Markkanen led Chicago with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Jordan’s Sharabaty gets gold medal at president’s cup

By - Mar 04,2019 - Last updated at Mar 04,2019

AMMAN — Jordan’s golden taekwondo run in 2019 has continued after Saleh Al Sharabaty clinched the -80kg crown at the World Taekwondo President’s Cup (Asian region) held on the Iranian island of Kish on Friday, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

The national team fighter has been in exceptional form this year, and followed up his gold last week in Egypt with more superb performances to take another to further boost his Olympic ranking.

Sharabaty launched his campaign by defeating Uzbekistan’s Shakhar Salif, 9-8, before facing Iran’s Mohammadi Nazimi in the semifinal and beating him 13-8. In the final, he beat another Iranian, Mehran Barjordari, 4-2. Hamza Qattan is another fighter in form, and he won bronze in the +87kg heavyweight division.

After qualifying through to the semifinal by beating Uzbek, Rajukov, 8-4, he lost to Iran’s Saeed Rajabi, 9-5, for the bronze. He was also successful in Egypt last week, winning a silver medal.

Their medals join an earlier gold won by Anas Al Sadiq in the -87kg weight to ensure Jordan finished with two gold and a bronze, enough to land the runner-up overall to Iran, with Korea in third.

‘Special, magical’ Federer reaches 100-title landmark

DUBAI — Roger Federer described winning his 100th career title as a “special, magical” achievement on Saturday but the 37-year-old insists he will not obsess over passing Jimmy Connors’ all-time men’s record of 109.

Federer reached the landmark with a ruthless 6-4, 6-4 dismantling of Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Dubai Championship final, his eighth trophy at the Gulf event.

His 100th title comes 18 years after he captured his first in Milan.

Federer, the winner of a record 20 Grand Slam titles, said that he is not particularly targeting the 109-mark of Connors.

“A lot of people always ask me about, ‘Are you going to go for 109?’,” said Federer.

“To answer the question is not easy. Winning five matches in six days or five matches in five days, it takes a different type of fitness.

“You can play a great tournament, play a brutal semi, you get unlucky sometimes with the schedule, whatever it may be.

He added: “That’s why you have to be fit on many fronts: mentally, physically; you have to be able to beat different types of players: beat them all on successive days.”

Connors, who set his record during his glory years in the 1970s and 1980s, took to Twitter to congratulate the Swiss star.

“Welcome to the ‘Triple Digit’ tournament victory club @rogerfederer — I’ve been a bit lonely — glad to have the company,” wrote the American.

Federer, who remains a long way back from the all-time mark of 167 titles set in the women’s game by Martina Navratilova, said that his two-decade longevity was key to the title century.

“It’s a deep satisfaction, an immediate one. A lot of people always emphasise all the Slams, but I play on the ATP Tour. This is where I’ve won so many of them. Been around for so long,” he added.

“I don’t rest between Slams all the time, like people think I might be. I think this number proves that. I think that’s why this was a very exciting week for me.”

‘Magical things

going on’

The Swiss star will have little time to contemplate achieving yet another record with Indian Wells in California, next on the agenda for the first Masters of the season.

“I didn’t come here expecting I was going to win, to be quite honest. I hadn’t played since Australia,” explained Federer who had been defeated by Tsitsipas in the fourth round at the Australian Open in January.

“I’m just happy on all fronts how my game has progressed, how well I played in the final, winning the eighth Dubai title, winning the 100th.

“So many magical things going on. I’m very, very happy right now.”

Federer’s 99th trophy had come last October at his home event in Basel.

He missed out on the century at the Paris Masters, the ATP Finals in London and then at Melbourne.

Tsitsipas, who will become the first Greek to ever reach the world’s top 10 on Monday, paid tribute to his opponent.

“100 [titles] is just completely insane — I’d be happy with 100 wins. Seriously, I’m trying to get there,” he said.

Tsitsipas admitted he had few chances in the rout.

“He was very aggressive, didn’t give me any time today. I was expecting it, for him to be a little more aggressive.

“He just seemed like having control over everything he was doing, taking the ball super early, on the rise, giving me no time to prepare.

“It felt like he was controlling everything on his own terms.”

Kepa’s fate in the balance as Chelsea bid to ease Sarri pressure

LONDON — Maurizio Sarri is set to decide whether to end Kepa Arrizabalaga’s Chelsea exile at Fulham on Sunday as the under-fire Blues boss and his controversial keeper face a defining moment in their troubled season.

Sarri dropped Kepa for Chelsea’s midweek 2-0 win over Tottenham as punishment for the Spaniard’s refusal to be substituted during last weekend’s League Cup final defeat against Manchester City.

The Italian was apoplectic at Kepa’s Wembley mutiny and, already battling to avoid the sack in the midst of a nightmare campaign, he responded to the challenge to his authority by wielding the axe.

Popular Argentine veteran Willy Caballero replaced Kepa against Spurs and delivered a confident performance while the world’s most expensive keeper kicked his heels on the bench.

Whether Sarri feels compelled to recall Kepa after his slap on the wrist is the key question hanging over Chelsea as they make the short trip to take on struggling Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Sarri claimed after the Tottenham match that Kepa remained his “first choice” keeper, but on Friday he refused to confirm whether the former Athletic Bilbao star would feature against Fulham.

Instead, he said revealed Kepa and Caballero would each start one of Chelsea’s next two games, with the Fulham fixture followed by a Europa League last 16 first leg tie against Dynamo Kiev on Thursday.

“We are very happy for Willy, because now we know very well he’s able to play also in a very difficult match,” Sarri said.

“I’m sure in one of the two next matches Kepa will be on the pitch.”

Draining week

Sixth placed Chelsea have no margin for error as they try to climb back into the top four.

They trail fourth placed Arsenal by three points and a shock defeat against managerless Fulham would leave Sarri back on the brink of the sack after a draining week for him and his team.

“I think we need to change three or four players, I don’t know how many exactly,” he said.

“On Sunday we played for 130 minutes and 95 minutes on Wednesday, so I need to value the recovery of every single player. Then we have to decide the team.”

While Sarri remains in a perilous position, it is second-bottom Fulham who go into the match in even more disarray after Claudio Ranieri was sacked on Thursday with the club 10 points from safety.

Ranieri departed after just four months in charge, with Fulham owner Shahid Khan making the ruthless move following a midweek loss at Southampton that saw fans protest against the Italian.

Scott Parker has replaced Ranieri on an interim basis and the former Chelsea midfielder will take charge for the first time against his former club.

Parker, who had been working as Ranieri’s assistant, goes into his first managerial job boosted by advice from former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.

The 38-year-old has been inundated with good-luck messages, including a text from Ferguson.

“I had some amazing text messages. Sir Alex texted me late last night, which was pretty incredible,” said Parker, who inherits a side that lost seven of their last eight league games under Ranieri.

“To think he spent the time to write a long, detailed message giving me some advice on how he sees things was truly inspirational. I know it sounds a big comment but it’s the truth.”
