STOCKHOLM — Swedish football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who coached England from 2001 to 2006, died on Monday at the age of 76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his agent said.

"He passed away peacefully this morning with his family around him at his home," Eriksson's agent Bo Gustavsson told AFP.

The Swede, who managed a number of high-profile teams and took England to World Cup quarter-finals in 2002 and 2006, announced in February 2023 that he was stepping back from public life due to "health issues".

In January, he told public broadcaster Sveriges Radio that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer and that his doctor's assessment was that he had "at best maybe a year [to live], at worst a little less".

"We have known about this but it happened very quickly. We were not prepared for it to happen today," Gustavsson told AFP.

Born on February 5, 1948 in Sunne in western Sweden, Eriksson, who goes by "Svennis" to Swedes, found success as a football manager after retiring from a modest career as a defender.

In 1977, he became manager of Swedish club Degerfors IF. After leading the small club to success in lower divisions, he attracted the attention of bigger clubs.

'Thank you for everything'

He went on to manage Sweden's IFK Goteborg before finding success internationally, managing Benfica in Portugal, as well as several Italian teams including Roma and Lazio.

"Thank you for everything you have done for us, coach," his former club Lazio said in a post to social media.

His most high-profile position was as the first foreigner to manage England's national squad.

During his spell, he took England to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002, where they were knocked out by Brazil.

They also made the last eight four years later where Portugal came out on top in a penalty shoot-out in a game where Wayne Rooney was sent off after a clash with his then Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Eriksson led England to the last eight of the 2004 Euros where Portugal also knocked them out in another penalty shoot-out.

He left the England job in 2006 after five years in charge.

'Special memories'

His time in the hotseat had seen a memorable 5-1 win over Germany in a World Cup qualifier but also controversy over his personal life, including an affair with television presenter Ulrika Jonsson.

"This is a very sad day. He gave all England fans such special memories," Mark Bullingham, CEO of England's Football Association, said in a statement.

"Sven will be rightly recognised and forever remembered for his significant work with the England team, and for his wider contribution to the game," Bullingham continued.

England's Prince William, who said he met Eriksson several times while president of the English Football Association, said he "was always struck by his charisma and passion for the game".

"My thoughts are with his family and friends. A true gentleman of the game," the prince said in a post to X.

Eriksson went on to manage Mexico, Ivory Coast and the Philippines, but never his native Sweden's national squad.

In March, Eriksson fulfilled what he said had been a life-long dream of managing English football club Liverpool.

Alongside former Liverpool favourites Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge in the home dug-out, he managed Liverpool Legends in a charity match against Ajax Legends, overseeing a 4-2 win for his team.

Eriksson said afterwards he had shed tears before kick-off, when he received a standing ovation from the crowd as he walked out onto the pitch, with fans singing the Liverpool anthem of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

"That will be a huge memory in life," said Eriksson said. "Absolutely beautiful."

Alcaraz downplays injury concerns as US Open looms

NEW YORK — Four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz downplayed injury concerns on Sunday after cutting short a US Open practice session when he twisted his right ankle.

"I just stop my practice just for precaution," the 21-year-old Spaniard told reporters who turned out for his scheduled Media Day press conference.

"I didn't feel comfortable enough to keep practicing just in case if everything is going to be worse. But after a few hours later, I'm still feeling good.

"Tomorrow I will try to be practicing again 100 per cent without thinking about it."

Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2022. He's piled up three more since then, including this year's French Open and Wimbledon.

But after he swept past Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final he was beaten by the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the Paris Olympics final at Roland Garros.

In his only scheduled US Open tune-up, Alcaraz crashed out of the Cincinnati Open, uncharacteristically losing his cool as he fell in three sets to French veteran Gael Monfils.

Alcaraz, who later apologized for smashing his racquet in frustration, called it "the worst match that I ever played in my career".

But he insisted on Saturday that a lack of hard court preparation -- after the unusual clay-to-grass-to-clay schedule brought about by the addition of the Olympic Games after Wimbledon this year -- wasn't a problem.

"It doesn't matter for me," he said. "Obviously I have loved to have more matches [under] my belt on hard court before the US Open.

"But it doesn't affect me at all. If I look back a little bit, you know, for example, facing Roland Garros, I hadn't too much matches on clay, and it was a pretty good result.

"And then in Wimbledon, same thing.

"So I don't want to think that it's going to be the same [as] the previous two Grand Slams, but I'm not worried about not having too many matches on hard court."

Despite his youth, Alcaraz has shown himself well able to rise to big occasions. He has never lost a Grand Slam final and said he would learn from his defeat in the Olympic final.

"It was a difficult moment to deal [with] for me," he admitted, "losing the gold medal in a really close match that I had opportunities.

"But, you know, in front of me, I had a really good player that he was fighting for the same thing as me, and he deserve it.

"So days after the Olympics was OK, I realise that I won the silver medal, it was a great achievement for me that I have to be proud of.

"The next final or the next important matches of my career I'm going to deal in a different way or a better way than I did in Olympics."

Jordan hosts N. Korea ahead of World Cup Round 3 qualifiers

AMMAN — The national football team regrouped on Saturday as coach  Jamal Sellamy named the lineup that will be finalised after playing North Korea in two upcoming friendlies in  preparation for Round 3 of 2026 World Cup qualifiers kicking off on  September 5.

Jordan will host the Korean team on August 27 and  August 29, but the squad has little time to  fully regroup to play the first two qualifiers against Kuwait on September 5 in Amman before travelling to Malaysia to play Palestine on September 10.

Stars playing abroad like Mousa Ta’mari who plays for France’s Montpellier and Yazan Al Arab, who just joined the Korean league, will miss the Korea matches. Yazan Nue’imat who just joined Qatar’s Arabi, as well as Nour Rawabdeh and Ali Alwan, playing in the Malaysian league are expected to join the team this week.

Currently 68th in FIFA rankings, Jordan has played 110 ranked Korea  in 6 previous official and friendly matches winning two, losing three and drawing once.

The Jordan Football Association announced the lineup over the weekend  as coach Sellamy told the media the matches against Korea will be vital ahead of the qualifiers. The “latest training camp in Turkey and monitoring the league matches over the past three weeks has helped to zoom in on the players most ready to represent the national team.”

“This is the start of the critical stage of qualifying and the players chosen are the best at this stage. Any player who proves they are better for the national squad will be recalled at any stage.” Sellamy told the media.

Round 3 includes 18 teams playing in three groups in home and away format from September 5, 2024 to June 10, 2025 with the top two from each group advancing directly to the World Cup while the rest will play Round 4 in two groups with group leaders advancing and a possible ninth team advancing through intercontinental playoffs.

Jordan will be playing in  Group B alongside Kuwait, Palestine, Oman, Iraq and South Korea. Group A includes Iran, Qatar, Uzbekistan, UAE, Kyrgyzstan, and North Korea, while Group C includes Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, China and Indonesia.

The Kingdom advanced to Round 3 for the second time in its history after they finished atop Group G Asian qualifiers. The squad is led by Moroccan coach Sellamy, who replaced compatriot Hussein Ammouta, who resigned citing “personal circumstances” although he has now signed a lucrative contract in the UAE, drawing huge criticism as observers noted the Jordan Football Association acted in good faith for his reasons given and waived his  break fee for early breach of contract.

However, Ammouta will be remembered as the coach who led Jordan to a first ever AFC Asian Cup final seeing off former Asian champs Korea and Iraq, among others, before losing to hosts Qatar in the final earlier this year. Jordan’s previous best past performance was reaching the Asian Cup quarterfinals in 2004 and 2011.

Jordan has now booked their spot for the next edition of the 2027 Asian Cup. The squad’s mental edge and competitive style and strategy on the pitch has clearly shifted and expectations are high they can make it the World Cup for the first time with FIFA expanding the format to include 16 more teams in the upcoming 2026 World Cup edition.

Since 1986, Jordan is participating in World Cup qualifiers for the 7th time. The team was on the verge of qualifying to the 2014 World Cup when they advanced to play then FIFA 6th ranked Uruguay in an intercontinental qualifying tie before exiting. Jordan had never reached that far in qualifying with Round 3 being the furthest they reached in other editions.

Djokovic targets Slam record at US Open, Sinner under cloud

NEW YORK — Novak Djokovic, fired up by his emotional Olympic Games triumph, targets new Grand Slam records at the US Open from Monday as title rival Jannik Sinner arrives in New York dogged by questions over two positive drugs tests.

Defending champion Djokovic can become the oldest Open era champion at the tournament if he secures a fifth title, a record he would share with Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer.

The 37-year-old would also move to 25 Grand Slam triumphs, taking him clear of the 24 he currently shares with Margaret Court.
The final major of the year comes at a critical time for Djokovic.

This year he was succeeded as Australian Open champion by Sinner who also relieved him of his world number one ranking.

Carlos Alcaraz took his French Open title with the Spanish crowd-pleaser then sweeping Djokovic off court in a one-sided Wimbledon final.
However, Djokovic, returned to the clay courts of Roland Garros to stun Alcaraz in the Olympic final.

His tearful victory in Paris allowed him to become only the fifth player to complete a career Golden Slam of all four majors and Olympic gold.
The victory also silenced the increasing number of doubters who had written off the Serb as a spent force in a new era where Sinner, 23, and 21-year-old Alcaraz are steadily moving centre stage.

Djokovic, who underwent surgery on his right knee in June, described his Olympic victory as his "biggest sporting success".

It was also the 99th title of his professional career.

'Biggest success'

"At the age of 37 and facing a 21-year-old who is probably the best player in the world right now, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back, I can say that this is probably the biggest sporting success I have ever had," insisted Djokovic.

Sinner arrives at the final Slam of the season having captured the Cincinnati Masters title.

However, that triumph was quickly overshadowed when it emerged he had been cleared of any wrongdoing after twice testing positive for a banned substance earlier in the season.

Sinner tested positive for clostebol, an anabolic agent prohibited at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

But he escaped a lengthy ban after officials accepted his explanation that the substance had entered his system as a result of contamination from a support team member.

"I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me," said Sinner.
The green light for him to continue playing was blasted as "ridiculous" by Australian player Nick Kyrgios.
Alcaraz, who won his first major at the US Open in 2022, was badly bruised by his defeat to Djokovic in the Olympic final.

He broke down in tears on court before admitting he felt he had "let Spain down".
His build-up to New York wasn't helped by a second round exit in Cincinnati to Gael Monfils in a match which saw the usually composed Alcaraz smash his racquet on court.

'Worst match'

He described the defeat as the "worst match" of his career.

In the women's singles at the US Open, Coco Gauff is the defending champion but the 20-year-old has endured a worrying dip in form in recent weeks.
A stormy exit from the Olympics in the third round was followed by early losses in Toronto and Cincinnati.

No woman has successfully defended her US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014.
Five-time major winner and world number one Iga Swiatek, the 2022 champion in New York, made the Cincinnati semi-finals where she was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka.

Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, was runner-up to Gauff at the US Open last year, losing from a set up in the final.

Germany goalkeeper Neuer retires from international duty

MUNICH, Germany — Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, a 2014 World Cup winner, announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday at the age of 38.

Bayern Munich veteran Neuer played 124 matches for Germany, captaining his country 61 times. His final appearance came in the quarter-final loss to eventual champions Spain at Euro 2024.

Neuer wrote on social media that although he was tempted to play until the 2026 World Cup, he was “convinced that now is the right time to take this step”.

He shone at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was named as the tournament’s best goalkeeper as Germany won the trophy for the fourth time.

Known as the archetypal “sweeper-keeper” of the modern era, Neuer revolutionised the position, often venturing far from his penalty box to snuff out attacks while possessing skills with his feet usually reserved for outfield players.

Neuer revealed he had made the announcement after discussions with his family, as well as a comprehensive conversation with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann on Wednesday morning.

He said he planned to “concentrate fully” on playing for Bayern, with whom he has won two Champions Leagues and 11 Bundesliga titles.

This season’s Champions League final will take place at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Neuer broke his leg in a skiing accident in December 2022 and only returned to the Germany squad just ahead of Euro 2024 on home soil, reclaiming his role as first choice.

He was criticised before Euro 2024 after a series of mistakes at club and international level, but impressed at the tournament.

“It was a great time which shaped me and of which I am very proud,” he said.

“Winning the World Cup title in 2014 and the special atmosphere during the European Championship at home this year are highlights for which I am extremely grateful.

“It was an honour for me to be captain of our national team until 2023. I loved wearing the Germany jersey.”

From 2010 until 2016, Neuer and Germany made it to the final four of every major tournament.

After disappointing group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and a last-16 elimination by England at Euro 2020, Germany won their first knockout match in eight years at Euro 2024.

Neuer follows fellow 2014 World Cup winners Thomas Mueller and Toni Kroos, who both played at Euro 2024, into international retirement.

On Monday, current Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan, who missed the 2014 World Cup campaign through injury, also announced he had played his last game at international level.

A product of the Schalke academy in his home town of Gelsenkirchen, Neuer made his international debut in 2009 and has more caps than any other Germany goalkeeper.

Germany won 81 of the 124 matches Neuer played, and he kept 51 clean sheets.

The retirement clears the way for long-time back-up Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona, who is expected to take over from the Bayern captain as Germany’s number one.

Week 3 of CFI Pro League kicks off tomorrow

By - Aug 21,2024 - Last updated at Aug 21,2024

AMMAN —  After a week full of unexpected results, there is much anticipation ahead of week 3 of the Professional Football League kicking off Wednesday.

Ahli head the table heading into the week after they beat Ma’an 2-1, Hussein upset Ramtha by the same score as Shabab Urdun beat Jazira 1-0, newcomers Sarih upstaged Aqaba 5-1, Salt held Faisali 1-1 and Mughayer Al-Sarhan held Wihdat 1-1.

The upcoming week will see Ahli vs Salt, Faisali vs Shabab Urdun, Sarih vs Hussein, Wihdat vs Ma’an, Jazira vs Ramtha, and Aqaba vs Mughayer Al-Sarhan.

Following the next round of matches, teams will stop for the national team’s upcoming preparations for  Round 3 of World Cup qualifiers as the national team is slated to  regroup and play North Korea in two friendlies.

With player transfers and professional player salaries becoming a burden for clubs reeling under lack of sponsors and limited prize money, club lineups as well as regrouping for the national squad are a challenge as many stars are turning to Gulf and Asian clubs for the season.

Three-time league champion Jazira  are back to the Pro League after they  were relegated in 2022. After they played the AFC West Asia Zone final in 2018 and 2019 and were in the top five in the past few seasons, the club hopes to make it back to the top league in determined fashion.

Similarly, Shabab Urdun who first joined the league in 2004 and won the title in 2006 were crowned  AFC Cup champs in 2007, are among teams with fluctuating performance and results.

For the past two seasons, clubs from the north have dominated the league. The 2023/2024 football season saw Hussein win the title for the first time becoming the 9th club to win the League since it kicked off in 1944. Neighbors Ramtha, won the 2022 title for the third time in their history after 39 years.

The past season saw Wihdat win the Jordan Cup for the 12th time as well as the Super Cup for their 15th time, while Faisali won their 9th Jordan Football Association Shield.

Regionally, Wihdat and Faisali failed to advance beyond Round 1 at AFC Cup and Champions League respectively.

Faisali are 35-time record league champs while Wihdat won 17 times since first joining in 1980. Ahli won eight times, Ramtha and Jazira three times, Shabab Urdun twice, Hussein, Amman and Urdun clubs once.

Sinner cleared of wrongdoing after failing anti-doping tests

PARIS — Tennis World No.1 Jannik Sinner has been cleared of any wrongdoing for two anti-doping violations earlier in the season, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Tuesday.

Sinner provided an in-competition sample at the Indian Wells Masters on March 10 which contained the presence of a metabolite of clostebol at low levels, according to the ITIA.

Clostebol is an anabolic agent prohibited at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

A further sample, conducted eight days later out of competition, also tested positive for low levels of the same metabolite.

“ITIA today confirms that an independent tribunal convened by Sport Resolutions has ruled that Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner bears No Fault or Negligence for two Anti-Doping Rule Violations under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme,” said the agency in a statement on Tuesday.

“The player explained that the substance had entered their system as a result of contamination from a support team member, who had been applying an over-the-counter spray [available in Italy] containing clostebol to their own skin to treat a small wound.

The ITIA added that the support team member in question had applied the spray between March 5-13 during which time they also provided daily massages and sports therapy to Sinner, which resulted in the contamination.

While the 23-year-old Italian has been cleared of any wrongdoing, he will be stripped of his results, prize money and ranking points from Indian Wells, in accordance with the anti-doping rules in force.

“I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me,” said Sinner in a statement published on X.

“I will continue to do everything I can to ensure I continue to comply with the ITIA’s anti-doping programme and I have a team around me that are meticulous in their own compliance.”

But other players on the tour have reacted to the news with scepticism and anger.

“Ridiculous — whether it was accidental or planned,” wrote Australian player Nick Kyrgios on X.

“You get tested twice with a banned [steroid] substance... you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream... Yeah nice.”

Canadian Denis Shapovalov wrote on social media: “Can’t imagine what every other player that got banned for contaminated substances is feeling right now.”

The positive tests were not intially made public while the ITIA investigation was ongoing.

Provisional suspensions were applied to Sinner after the two tests, however he successfully appealed them both meaning that he was able to continue competing.

ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse said: “Following that investigation, the ITIA accepted the player’s explanation as to the source of the clostebol and that the presence of the substance was not intentional.”

Sabalenka ousts No.1 Swiatek to reach Cincinnati final against Pegula

CINCINNATI  — Aryna Sabalenka squandered nine match points but defeated World No.1 Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday, breaking through to her first final at the WTA and ATP Cincinnati Open.

Four-time Cincinnati semifinalist Sabalenka will rise to second in the WTA rankings with a week to go before the start of the US Open.

“I finally broke the barrier,” Sabalenka said of her place in the final. “It was such a tough battle with Iga, and we also had to be patient with the weather.”

Raindrops required the court lines to be dried by towels during several short interruptions.

Sabalenka will play Monday’s final against US sixth seed Jessica Pegula, a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 winner over Spain’s Paula Badosa.

Pegula, who won last week’s Toronto title, is the third American in the Open Era to reach the Canadian and Cincinnati finals in the same year after Rosie Casals (1970) and Serena Williams (2013).

Sabalenka had a battle on her hands to close out her win, with Swiatek putting up a huge battle in the closing stages.

Third-ranked Sabalenka led 5-1 in the second set but Swiatek showed why she is ranked atop the WTA table as she repeatedly saved match-winners from her opponent.

Sabalenka was broken for 5-3 but finally claimed the hard-fought victory a game later with a concluding break of Swiatek on a return winner on her 10th match point after nearly two hours.

“That was a brilliant performance from me. I’m really happy with the win, especially against Iga,” said Sabalenka.

“We always have tough battles and get this win in straight sets... that’s kind of like achievement for me.”

Pegula and Badosa were hit by a rain delay of well over an hour midway through the second set with Badosa leading 4-3 and trailing a set.

They resumed with the Spaniard forcing a third set before Pegula broke for 5-3 in the third and served out victory a game later.

“We had tough conditions, but I was able to not get frustrated with the rain delay,” Pegula said. “I felt I was playing and competing well.

“Paula was hitting so hard, I didn’t know what to do sometimes. I had to remind myself to be aggressive and serve well. I knew it would be hard to break her.

“But I played a couple of good points and was able to serve it out.”

Pegula said she expects to give Sabalenka “some trouble” in the final.

“It will be a good test to go up against her,” Pegula said. “I’ll do my best. It has been a long couple of weeks.”

Swiatek ‘wasn’t good’

Sabalenka’s victory served as revenge after losing to Swiatek in Masters-level clay finals at Madrid and Rome last spring.

“Aryna was just playing better today and using her advantages,” Swiatek said. “I didn’t serve well at the beginning, which threw me off my rhythm. For sure, it wasn’t a good performance for me.”

Swiatek she played overall better than she expected, adding, “I’m happy with the result anyway. I’m already kind of focusing on what I need to do to feel even better in New York. And we’ll work on stuff for sure.”

Maresca understands Chelsea frustration as axed Sterling seeks ‘clarity’

LONDON — Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said it is “normal” for players to be upset at being left out after Raheem Sterling’s camp issued a statement following his exclusion for Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

After another chaotic transfer window, Chelsea’s squad has bloated to 43 players with over 50 on the club’s books including those on loan.

Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi were also left out of the squad for Maresca’s first competitive match in charge.

Many others have been sidelined completely in pre-season with Conor Gallagher and Romelu Lukaku among those not to have been handed squad numbers as they look for new clubs.

“The manager has to take decisions that people and players doesn’t like — it’s normal,” said Maresca.

“It’s just a technical decision, no more than that. We will see in the next days.”

Sterling joined Chelsea from City in 2022 for a reported £50 million ($65 million) but the England international has had a limited impact.

The 29-year-old has also fallen down the pecking order as the Blues have invested over £1 billion on new players over the past two years under new ownership.

“Raheem Sterling is contracted to Chelsea Football Club for the next three years,” said a statement released to media by Sterling’s camp.

“He returned to England two weeks early to conduct individual training, and has had a positive pre-season under the new coach, who he has developed a good working relationship with.

“He is committed, as ever, to delivering at the highest level for Chelsea FC and the fans, who he holds in high regard, and given his inclusion in official club pre-match material this week, our expectation was that Raheem would be involved in this weekend’s fixture in some capacity.

“As a camp, we have always had positive dialogue with, and assurance from, Chelsea FC in relation to Raheem’s future at the club, so we look forward to gaining clarity on the situation.”

Chelsea are expected to be busy trimming their squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Chilwell is one of those who has been told by Maresca he can find a new club.
