Director general of the Jordanian-Syrian free zone Irfan Khasawneh said on Saturday that operations in the zone remained normal and stable despite ongoing developments on the Syrian side of the border.

Khasawneh also noted that warehouses at the Jaber-Nasib free zone currently hold goods equivalent to the capacity of 300 trucks, owned by investors of various nationalities, including Jordanians, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

AMMAN — Sela for Training and Protection of Heritage is an NGO that recently organised trainings in rope access conservation for local experts.

It has been the continuation of Sela's mission to involve the local communities for preservation, supported by the Drosos Foundation and the Petra Development and Tourism Regional Authority (PDTRA).

It also leverages the expertise of Amman’s Polygon Training Centre, which trained and certified Sela’s staff, and Acrobatica, Europe’s leading company in rope-access techniques, whose specialists provided hands-on training in Petra.

According to the head of Sela, the training programme seamlessly combined theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing participants to meet the unique challenges of restoring Petra’s monumental structures.

"The journey began with an introductory session in Florence, Italy, where trainees were introduced to rope-access techniques by Acrobatica experts. This was followed by certification training at the Polygon Training Centre in Amman and practical sessions on-site in Petra under the guidance of Acrobatica’s specialists," Ronza underlined.

The idea is to empower Jordanians with specialised skills to safeguard Petra’s rich legacy but also to foster sustainable economic opportunities for communities.

“Participants gained proficiency in essential rope-access techniques, including the use of anchor points, knot systems, and personal protective equipment. Furthermore, advanced modules included rope descents and ascents, transitions and rescue procedures,” Ronza explained, adding that the programme culminated in an independent descent on the Tomb of Sextus Florentinus, marking a major professional milestone for the trainees.

“We are honoured to have played a role in this significant endeavour. Sharing our expertise with the talented Sela team, who are working tirelessly to preserve Petra, fills us with pride. Education and knowledge-sharing have always been the foundation of our success, and this collaboration exemplifies the impact of that philosophy," said Anna Marras CEO of Acrobatica Group.

Five women became the first female conservators in Jordan, certified in rope-access conservation.

“These remarkable women are trailblazers in Jordanian conservation,” said Ronza. “Their achievements are a source of inspiration and a powerful example of what can be accomplished when opportunity meets determination. We are immensely proud to support their journey.”

“The training programme is part of Sela’s flagship initiative, ‘Jordanian Archaeology as a Sustainable Industry.’ This long-term project, supported by the Drosos Foundation, aims to establish heritage conservation as a cornerstone of Jordan’s economic and social development,” Ronza highlighted,

Ronza added that by cultivating local expertise and promoting sustainable practices, the project seeks to transform Jordan’s cultural heritage into a thriving, community-driven industry that supports tourism and preserves historical treasures for future generations.

“With this project, we are envisioning a sustainable future for Jordanian archaeology,” Ronza emphasised, adding “Our trainees are not only preserving Petra but are also laying the foundation for an industry that empowers communities and drives growth.”

Sela and international stake-holders teamed up to preserve the local cultural heritage and inaccessible monuments.

"As we invest in local talent, we are also investing in the future of Jordan’s cultural heritage. This initiative is a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and education,” Ronza concluded.

AMMAN — In collaboration with Plan International, the Prime Ministry's Human Rights Unit hosted a nationwide workshop on Friday to create a draft national plan for implementing the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights 2024's recommendations.

At the workshop's launch, Director of the Prime Ministry's Human Rights Department Khalil Abdallat noted that Jordan is still working toward His Majesty King Abdullah's vision, which is centred on establishing a state of law and upholding people's rights and freedoms, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He said that Jordan had ratified 204 of the 279 recommendations made by the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights, highlighting the significance of these measures in bolstering the state's human rights process, which advocates for determining national priorities through participation in order to address regional and economic issues and using teamwork to create a conducive environment for carrying out international commitments.

In order to apply the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights' recommendations, incorporate them into their plans and programmes, and give the Human Rights Unit all the tools it needs to follow up on them, the prime minister sent out a circular to all official organisations, he said.

According to Abdallat, the government has endeavoured to carry out the Royal vision by releasing a set of laws, procedures, and guidelines that support the advancement and fortification of the human rights framework and uphold international obligations.

He underlined that the workshop's goal is to match the review recommendations with national objectives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the comprehensive national human rights plan, and the National Centre for Human Rights report.

He emphasised the significance of establishing a timeline and precise measurement indicators to guarantee the intended outcomes and that ongoing evaluation will serve as the foundation for raising performance and increasing transparency.

Plan International's Country Director Hamida Jahama stressed the significance of the collaboration with the Prime Ministry's Human Rights Unit, which is an extension of the organisation's work with regional coalitions to support the Universal Periodic Review's 2024 recommendations.

She said that the goal of this collaboration is to boost civil society's contribution to Jordan's endeavours and pledges to build and modify the Kingdom's human rights framework, which has made significant strides in this area.

Since young men and women's involvement in national consultations related to the Universal Periodic Review demonstrates their awareness and commitment to human rights issues and advancing social justice in Jordan, Jahama emphasised the significance of involving, supporting, and empowering them to bring about long-lasting positive change in their communities.

Jordanian Embassy in Washington D.C. says no Jordanian officials advised Assad to leave Syria

Embassy says Wall Street Journal’s claims ‘baseless’, asks for correction

By - Dec 07,2024 - Last updated at Dec 07,2024

AMMAN — Jordanian Embassy in Washington D.C. has refuted as “baseless” a Wall Street Journal’s report, claiming that Jordanian officials have advised Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave his conflict-hit country and form a government from exile.

In a report titled, “Syrian rebels’ lightning offensive zeroes in on major city,” Wall Street Journal’s Isabel Coles claimed that Egyptian and Jordanian officials have urged Assad to leave the country and form a government in exile.

The Wall Street Journal’s article came amid reports about the Syrian army losing control over major cities to the opposition forces, which began a sudden offensive led by Hayat Tahrir Al Sham fighters. The two Syrian cities of Aleppo and Hama have been reported to fall to extremist insurgents.

In a statement made available to The Jordan Times, Jordan’s Embassy in Washington D.C. denounced and denied the “baseless allegations published in The Wall Street Journal article by Isabel Coles.

“The claim that Jordanian officials urged President Assad to leave Syria and form a government in exile is completely unfounded and entirely false. We regret that such a reputable media outlet would publish unverified and misleading information without proper fact-checking,” the embassy said.

It also said that the Wall Street Journal did not reach out to the embassy to verify this allegation, which it said, “constitutes a serious breach of journalistic standards. We categorically reject this falsehood and call on The Wall Street Journal to issue an immediate correction.”

The ministry said that the Jaber crossing will remain partially operating to receive Jordanians returning from Syria, while no passenger and cargo movement will be allowed from Jordan northwards into Syria,

The Foreign Ministry has called on Jordanians in Syria to immediately leave the country in light of the deteriorating security situation.

Ministry’s spokesperson Sufian Qudah said a “crisis cell” has been formed to evacuate Jordanians from Syria and ensure their return to the Kingdom.

AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Thursday directed ministers to expedite the implementation of the government’s policy statement, which was endorsed by Parliament on Wednesday, emphasising the need for a detailed executive programme to be finalised by January.

During the Cabinet session, the prime minister underlined the importance of fostering constructive engagement with the Lower House, parliamentary blocs, and political parties, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

He also called for addressing parliamentary inquiries and comments within an institutional framework and in accordance with the Constitution, while ensuring active follow-up on legislative projects in partnership with relevant parliamentary committees.

The Cabinet also approved several decisions, including measures to support agricultural projects and enhance services for farmers, as part of broader efforts to overcome obstacles and bolster national food security.

Among these decisions was the approval of the second-phase financing agreement for the Emergency Food Security Project with the Islamic Development Bank, aimed at boosting the Kingdom’s strategic grain reserves to better manage future price fluctuations of wheat and barley.

The Council of Ministers also approved agreements with the World Food Programme (WFP) to support initiatives across several sectors, including implementing the national school feeding programme through the Ministry of Education, enhancing the Ministry of Social Development’s capacity to assist vulnerable groups, and providing technical support for food security, food systems, and reducing food waste through the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Cabinet also took steps to alleviate financial burdens on citizens by exempting scholarship students at public universities from outstanding fines to ease the financial pressures faced by students and their families.

The Cabinet also approved a project to establish a natural gas distribution network to supply homes and production sectors in Amman and Zarqa, with the project expected to take four years to complete.

Designed to meet international safety standards, the network is projected to reduce gas costs for households and industries by at least 35 per cent once operational.

Additional decisions included endorsing the Tax Settlement Committee's recommendations to resolve cases involving 79 companies and taxpayers and approving new legislation and regulations to enhance public services.

Laws approved also included the 2024 General Statistics Law, which aims to diversify and enrich statistical data sources by utilising administrative records from government and private entities, adopting innovative data collection methods, and saving time and resources.

The Cabinet also endorsed amendments to health insurance coverage regulations for employees in companies and institutions for 2024 to enhance employee benefits and ensure broader access to health services.

The National Strategy for Future Stations 2025 (formerly Knowledge Stations) was also endorsed to support entrepreneurship policies and advance the national strategic plan.

The strategy includes ongoing training in entrepreneurship and contributes to the Public Sector Modernisation Roadmap, with a specific focus on activating 3.5 million digital identities in the near future.
