Football’s dark year: from bribery arrests to suicide attacks

By - Dec 29,2015 - Last updated at Dec 29,2015

LONDON — Dawn had just broken in Zurich when a man was spotted being dragged out of an opulent hotel’s side entrance. Raising

a single white sheet, hotel staff made an inadequate attempt to shield the guest being forced to check out early after being arrested in his bedroom.

Eduardo Li was in clear view on the quiet side street as he was bundled into an unmarked police car, one of seven FIFA officials arrested as Swiss police swooped on the Baur au Lac hotel at the behest of American authorities.

Years of investigations into football corruption burst into public view on the morning of May 27 as the so-called “World Cup of fraud” was exposed and FIFA would be coerced into cleaning up its act.

Li, the Costa Rican federation president who was in Zurich expecting to join FIFA’s elite executive committee, was a lesser-known target of the US case. But his arrest, which was captured on video by The Associated Press was the most visible.

By the end of 2015, four FIFA vice presidents (VP) had been indicted in the United States, including two swept up in a second wave of arrests in December, after being chosen to replace those from the Americas indicted in May.

A fifth VP, Michel Platini, was banished by FIFA from football until 2023 along with Sepp Blatter — the man he was expected to succeed as president — after their dealings became the subject of a Swiss criminal case.

After 40 years at FIFA, 17 as president, the reign of the seemingly immovable Blatter ended in disgrace in 2015. Few lamented his downfall.

The 79-year-old Blatter did not see it coming in February when he beamed: “Now you see why I am happy,” as he relaxed in a Northern Ireland hotel accompanied by a girlfriend almost 30 years his junior at a FIFA meeting.

And Blatter managed to brush off the anger that greeted revelations about the scale of bribery and kickbacks — corruption that mostly occurred within confederations rather than involving FIFA HQ in Zurich — to be voted in for a fifth term by federations on May 29.

Blatter subjected himself to a bruising encounter with the media the next day, a Saturday morning when he was asked whether some of the accusations were indicative of his “incompetence or intentional negligence”.

Blatter was defiant, vowing to see out his four-year term. The bravado quickly evaporated.

“Then came the different information from the US with this and that,” Blatter aide Walter Gagg told the AP.

After being warned in meetings with associates that he could be the next FIFA executive in the prosecutors’ sights, Blatter stunned the world on Tuesday June 2 by announcing plans to resign, accepting he lacked the game’s backing.

Blatter hoped to hand over power in February, but the Swiss attorney general intervened by raiding FIFA’s HQ in September and questioning the president. Years of suspicions about Blatter’s integrity were confirmed when he was banished by FIFA’s ethics judge for unethical conduct over a financial transaction with Platini, who received the same eight-year ban from football.

The Swiss investigation — like the parallel American case — will continue into 2016 as trials begin and more officials fear their illicit profiteering from sporting contracts is uncovered. At the same time, FIFA will implement reforms designed to clean up the organisation and elect a new president on February26.

Perhaps what surprised football fans in 2015 as much as the arrests was the interest of US Attorney General Loretta Lynch in such sleaze.

But the significant role the world’s most popular sport plays in the US was confirmed not only by Lynch but by Americans at, of all things in this year, a FIFA event. When the US won a third Women’s World Cup title in July, the victory over Japan was watched by more than 25 million American television viewers.

The wrong side of passion for football in the US was also displayed this year when the AP filmed fans from New York rivals City and Red Bulls clashing before their derby in New Jersey in August, hooliganism previously associated with European supporters.

One of the enduring images, though, of a football year scarred by wrongdoing was of the game’s ability to provide a powerful platform for unity after becoming a target for Islamic extremists in last month’s Paris attacks.

After France’s match against Germany at the Stade de France was targeted by suicide bombers, who failed to enter the stadium, the French team travelled to England for the friendliest of friendly games. The fixture was overshadowed by a sense of grief, but also of fraternity as the Wembley Stadium arch was lit in the blue, white and red of the French flag and the national anthem was sung by both sets of fans.

But amid the display of friendship was a realisation that stadiums were now targets. Security was quickly beefed up across Europe and the heightened state of alert led to high-profile games being called off.

Football’s most pressing concern in 2016 will remain ensuring the safety of fans and players, particularly with France hosting the first 24-team European Championship in June and July.

The showpiece event, along with the US-hosted Copa America Centenario, will also offer football’s stars a chance to remind people why it’s the world’s favourite game — rather than a source of corruption.

Blatter feels “abandoned” by the global soccer body and will now focus on clearing his name, the 79-year-old Swiss told German magazine Bunte.

FIFA’s watchdog last week banned Blatter and UEFA boss Michel Platini for eight years for ethics violations. Both men immediately denied any wrongdoing and said they would appeal to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“I now no longer fight for FIFA,” Blatter, who led soccer’s governing body for 17 years, said according to a preview of an interview with Bunte. “They abandoned me. I am now only fighting for myself and my honour.”

AMMAN — The season’s first basketball competition concluded on Tuesday when Orthodoxi beat Riyadi 68-62 in the final of the Jordan Cup. On their way to the final Orthodoxi beat Awdeh 56-46 while Riyadi beat Ghazzet Hashem 87-67.

The knockout competition saw Riyadi oust Kufr Youba, Orthodoxi beat Hurrieh, Awdeh beat Nashama and Ghazzet Hashem beat Jalil in the first round.  Last season, Applied Science University (ASU) beat Ittihad Schools for the Jordan Cup title after they ousted Riyadi and Orthodoxi in the semis.

ASU and Ittihad have pulled out of competitions over differences with the Jordan Basketball Federation and players have been dispersed over the rest of clubs.

Kanter helps Thunder edge Nuggets

Enes Kanter came off the bench to score 21 points, grab eight rebounds and totally frustrate the Nugget’s coaching staff as he helped the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 122-112 victory on Sunday.

“You can’t let Kanter, who just manhandled us, come off the bench and get 21 and 8 and five offensive rebounds,” Denver coach Michael Malone said.

“Literally, I think Kanter was the MVP tonight. He dominated us. Every time we play this team he dominates us. We just have to get in the weight room and get a little stronger.”

Russell Westbrook scored 30 points on 11 of 17 shooting. He also collected 12 assists and nine rebounds.

Forward Kevin Durant added 26 points and 10 assists. Forward Serge Ibaka scored 19 points as the Thunder improved to 21-10.

Forward Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Will Barton came off the bench to score 19 points while centre Joffrey Lauvergne collected 18 points.

“I do think we’re capable of being better,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan said.

“I think we’ve shown that. I think the concentration, the focus and just the will to defend at the level I think we’re capable of defending has to be an area we continue to grow and get better at.”

Oklahoma City found themselves getting off to a slow start for the second successive game, as they were unable to contain Faried, who had 10 points and three offensive rebounds in the game’s first six minutes.

The Nuggets also attempted to make Durant a non-factor by double teaming him each time he touched the ball near the paint. He was forced to pass the ball or take bad shots.

Westbrook and Ibaka picked up the slack as they accounted for 28 first-half points, even though they still trailed 61-53 at halftime.

Durant finally figured out the Denver defence in the third quarter, as he scored 12 points to give the Thunder a one-point advantage heading into the fourth.

“You can game plan all you want,” Malone said.

“Kevin Durant is one of the best players in the world. Russell Westbrook is one of the top guards in the world.

“They took it to another level.”

Orthodoxi play Riyadi for Jordan Cup title

By - Dec 29,2015 - Last updated at Dec 29,2015

AMMAN — The season’s first basketball competition concludes on Tuesday when Orthodoxi play Riyadi in the final of the Jordan Cup.

The Jordan Cup has seen Riyadi win in 2002, 2011 and 2012, Fastlink took the title for four consecutive seasons 2003-04-05-06, Orthodoxi in 2007, Zain in 2008, ASU in 2010, 2013 and 2014.

Orthodoxi are reigning Premier Basketball League champs after they beat Ittihad for their record 23rd title. The veteran team returned to the forefront of competitions after winning the League in 2011 ending a 10-year drought when they beat titleholders ASU. In 2012 and 2013, ASU dominated beating Ittihad to win the league for two back to back titles and the fourth time in their record.

Observers have pointed out to a regression that negatively affected the basketball scene in the past few years and hope players and fans will return to the courts, and help bring the zeal of competition to Jordan’s second most popular sport.

The Jordan Cup is a good warm up for teams ahead of the Premier Basketball League as teams scramble to finalise their line-ups with no import players this season.

U-23 team plays North Korea

By - Dec 29,2015 - Last updated at Dec 29,2015

AMMAN — Jordan’s U-23 team is set to play North Korea on Tuesday in their first friendly in their UAE camp running until January 7.

After a friendly against Syria was cancelled the team will play North Korea again on December 31 and Uzbekistan on January 6 before concluding its training camp. They will then leave to Qatar on January 10 for the 2nd AFC U-23 Championship serving as Asia’s qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The Kingdom qualified to the U-23 Championship after it topped Group B qualifiers in Amman. Jordan was drawn in Group D with Australia, the UAE and Vietnam in the 16-team competition set for January 12-30, 2016 in Qatar.

Jordan’s coach Jamal Abu Abed underlined the team was in high spirits before the matches which would help finalise the line-up ahead of the Championship. With players unable to fully regroup in preparation for the Olympic qualifiers, the U-23 team played Iraq losing 1-0 in a friendly after playing local friendlies against Wihdat, Jazira, Faisali and Shabab Urdun during the last two months as Abu Abed worked on defensive and offensive tactics and tried to enhance “team cohesiveness”.

In the inaugural AFC U-22 Championship (now renamed the AFC U-23 Championship), the U-23 team beat South Korea to take bronze as Iraq beat Saudi Arabia to win the title.

Earlier this year, the team was eliminated from the 1st West Asian Championship. In 2014, the U-23 squad represented Jordan at the Asian Games where it made to the quarter-finals despite a bumpy preparation period amid the busy agenda of the national team and local clubs.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio immediately bounced back from a rare loss and beat Denver 101-86 on Saturday to extend their franchise record for consecutive home wins to 26.

Kawhi Leonard had 20 points for the Spurs, who maintained their eight-game lead atop the NBA’s Southwest Division.

The day’s other key contests were in the Eastern Conference: Miami beat state and division rival Orlando to move one-and-a-half games above the Magic and stay within half a game of leader Atlanta, which comfortably beat New York; while Boston used a strong team effort to earn a victory over Detroit.

San Antonio’s LaMarcus Aldridge had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Boris Diaw had 16 points for the Spurs, who have won all 17 home games this season to add to the final nine of the previous campaign.

Denver’s Nikola Jokic scored 22 points on 10-for-19 shooting.

Miami rallied in the fourth quarter to win 108-101 at Orlando, with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh each scoring 24 points.

Orlando led 76-69 after three, but Wade fuelled Miami’s rally with 12 points in the fourth. The Heat outscored the Magic 39-25 in the final period.

Nik Vucevic led Orlando with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Atlanta overcame a slow start to win their sixth straight game, beating New York 117-98.

Paul Millsap scored 22 points and Al Horford added 19 for the Hawks, who trailed by 15 points midway through the first quarter and were down by 14 late in the third before completely taking over the game, going up by 20 points early in the fourth.

Carmelo Anthony, returning after missing one game with a sprained right ankle, finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who have dropped three straight.

Boston had six players score in double figures and the Celtics won 99-93 at Detroit.

Avery Bradley scored 18 points and Isaiah Thomas had 17 points and nine assists for the Celtics, who hung on in a tight finish.

The Pistons were within two points when former Detroit player Jonas Jerebko hit a baseline jumper with 10.7 seconds left to seal the result.

Pistons centre Andre Drummond had 22 points and 22 rebounds for his fifth 20-20 game of the season.

Dallas’ J.J. Barea made a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 26 points, powering the Mavericks to a 118-111 win against Chicago.

Barea went 7-of-8 from beyond the arc and continued the form that saw score a career-high 30 in the previous game, while Zaza Pachulia contributed 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks.

Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 25 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, but had a key turnover before getting called for a 5-second violation when Chicago had a chance to tie in the final 11 seconds.

Charlotte’s Kemba Walker scored 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to steer the Hornets to a 98-92 win against Memphis.

Nicolas Batum had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who trailed 81-76 early in the final period.

Mike Conley scored 19 points for Memphis.

Portland’s Allen Crabbe scored a career-high 26 points and the Trail Blazers shut down LeBron James to rout Cleveland 105-76.

Crabbe scored 21 in the first half, helping Portland arrest a five-game losing streak. He was 4 for 6 from three-point range for the night.

C.J. McCollum had 16 points for the Trail Blazers.

James missed his first four shots, had six points at halftime and didn’t play in the fourth quarter. His 12 points total matched his season low.

Toronto used some hot perimeter shooting to win 111-90 at Milwaukee, rattling off eight three-pointers to take the lead late in the third quarter and then finishing the match with seven straight threes.

The Los Angeles Clippers shook off some bad pre-game injury news — Blake Griffin will be out at least two weeks with a torn tendon in his quadriceps — and won 109-104 at Utah.

Indiana belatedly found their three-point range in the fourth quarter, hitting six, to win 102-88 at Minnesota.

New Orleans hung on during a scoreless final two minutes to edge Houston 110-108, with Tyreke Evans stealing Trevor Ariza’s inbounds pass in the final seconds to seal the win.

Washington inflicted a sixth successive home defeat on Brooklyn, beating the Nets 111-96 to get back to an even 14-14 win-loss record.

Philadelphia notched only their second win of the season by beating Phoenix 111-104, taking their first road win after 23 successive defeats dating back to last season.

Garcia’s FIFA corruption report must be published — Prince Ali

By - Dec 28,2015 - Last updated at Dec 28,2015

LONDON — FIFA presidential candidate HRH Prince Ali has called for Michael Garcia’s report into allegations of corruption during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to be published immediately, the BBC said on Sunday.

Former United States prosecutor Garcia resigned as FIFA’s independent ethics investigator in protest at the way his report into the bidding for the tournaments in Russia and Qatar was handled. “People need to know what has been going on at FIFA,” Prince Ali said.

Garcia submitted his report in September 2014. FIFA released a 42-page summary clearing Russia and Qatar of corruption, rather than publishing the full document.

Prince Ali is standing to replace Sepp Blatter as FIFA president along with Jerome Champagne, Gianni Infantino, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Tokyo Sexwale. The election will take place in Zurich on February 26.

Warriors maintain upper hand against Cavs

OAKLAND, California — Golden State relied on its defence rather than trademark sharpshooting in beating Cleveland 89-83 on Friday in a Christmas Day reprise of last season’s NBA Finals.

The Warriors won their 32nd consecutive home game and widened the gap to the next-best Western Conference team as San Antonio’s hot streak came to an end with defeat at Houston.

Oklahoma City — with the third-best record in the West — also lost, beaten at home by Chicago. Golden State’s Draymond Green had 22 points and 15 rebounds while Stephen Curry added 19 points for the Warriors, who maintained their edge over Cleveland by limiting the Cavaliers to 32 per cent shooting.

LeBron James scored 25 points to lead the Cavaliers, who had won their previous six games. Cleveland lost the Finals to the Warriors in six games but had excuses, missing power forward Kevin Love the entire series with a shoulder injury and losing point guard Kyrie Irving to a knee injury in the first game.

Having both those players healthy for this rematch did little to help Cleveland. Love scored just 10 points on 5-for- 16 shooting, and Irving missed 11 of 15 shots in a 13-point game. Houston slowed down the soaring San Antonio Spurs with an 88-84 victory.

The improved Houston defence held the Spurs to a season low in points to snap their season-best seven-game winning streak. Houston’s lead was shaky in the final five minutes, but James Harden hit a 3-pointer to push the lead out to eight points.

After Tim Duncan’s layup reduced the margin, Harden brought the crowd to its feet with an off-balance 3-pointer from the corner that made it 84-75. Harden finished with 20 points, while Kawhi Leonard had the same tally for the Spurs. Chicago provided the Christmas surprise with a 105-96 win at Oklahoma City.

Jimmy Butler scored 23 points, and Pau Gasol had 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, who had lost their previous three. Kevin Durant had 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Oklahoma City, who went into the game with nine wins from ten games.

Miami’s Chris Bosh had 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Heat to a 94-88 overtime win against New Orleans. The Clippers predictably beat the woeful Lakers 94-84 in the all-Los Angeles clash, with Chris Paul scoring 23 points for the victors.

Raptors hold on to edge Mavericks

TORONTO — DeMar DeRozan scored 28 points and Bismack Biyombo had a career-high 20 rebounds, leading the Toronto Raptors to a 103-99 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

Kyle Lowry added 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Toronto, which swept the two-game season series against Dallas. Terrence Ross scored 16 points, and Luis Scola finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The Raptors appeared to be on their way to a comfortable victory with five minutes to go in the fourth. But the Mavericks battled back.

Jeremy Evans scored with 11.6 seconds remaining to trim Toronto’s lead to 101-99, but missed a foul shot that would have got Dallas within one. Ross then closed it out with a couple of free throws.

Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Pistons 93, Heat 92

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s jumper with 55.5 seconds left put Detroit ahead to stay, and the Pistons rallied from 18 points down for the road win.

Reggie Jackson led the Pistons with 18 points, while Stanley Johnson and Caldwell-Pope each had 14. The Pistons were 15 for 29 from 3-point range, outscoring Miami 45-12 in that department.

Chris Bosh scored 20 points for Miami, which missed a pair of go-ahead shots in the final three seconds. Dwyane Wade missed a 4.2m, and after Andre Drummond missed a pair of free throws at the other end and the Heat got the ball back with 1.1 seconds left, Bosh missed a jumper as time expired.

Wade finished with 19 points, and Hassan Whiteside had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Miami.

Grizzlies 104, 76ers 90

Marc Gasol scored 19 points for Memphis, and Mike Conley had 18 points and six assists.

The Grizzlies had five players score in double figures. Courtney Lee had 15 points, reserve Zach Randolph added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Matt Barnes finished with 12 points and 10 boards.

Jahlil Okafor scored 18 points and Hollis Thompson contributed 16 for Philadelphia, who dropped to 1-29 while losing their 11th straight game. Now the 76ers head out for a six-game trip, and they have lost 22 in a row on the road.

Philadelphia had 28 turnovers and shot 65.6 per cent (21 for 32) from the free-throw line.

Lakers 111, Nuggets 107

Kobe Bryant tied a season high with 31 points after missing a game with a sore right shoulder, and Los Angeles rallied from a 21-point, first-half deficit to beat short-handed Denver.

Bryant also had five assists and played stellar defence to help bottle up the hot-shooting Will Barton, who had 23 points in the first half only to finish with 25.

The 37-year-old Bryant announced last month he would retire after the season. He received plenty of cheers during his penultimate game in the Mile High City, including chants of “Kobe, Kobe” in the waning seconds.

Up 103-100 with 1:23 remaining, Bryant hit two free throws and then a jumper to seal the Lakers’ fifth win of the season.
