Jordan resumes Asian Cup qualifiers against Afghanistan

By - Oct 09,2017 - Last updated at Oct 09,2017

AMMAN — Jordan plays Afghanistan on Tuesday as it starts return leg 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers in an away match in Tajikistan.

Jordan which held Bahrain 0-0 in a friendly, again only managed a 1-1 draw with Oman in the latest friendly in Dubai this week before flying to Dushanbe for the qualifier, which will be followed by another against Cambodia on October 14.

Jordan leads Group C and will seek to come back with a win to secure qualification from the group. In the first leg it beat Afghanistan 4-1 after holding Vietnam 0-0 and scoring a 7-0 win over lowly Cambodia.

Vietnam is second in the group after it beat Cambodia 2-1 and held Afghanistan 1-1. Cambodia beat Afghanistan 1-0. The top two teams from each group move to the finals which will be held in the UAE in 2019.

The national team will be without four Faisali players whose suspension has been upheld by the Asian Football Confederation, following the Union of Arab Football Associations one year ban after the ensuing brawl in Faisali’s final match against Esperance Tunis (Tarraji) in the final of the Arab Clubs Championship held in Egypt. Faisali is appealing the decision.

Since first taking part in Asian Cup qualifiers in 1972, Jordan reached the Asian Championship three times. The pinnacle was at the 13th Asian Cup, when Jordan lost to Japan in the quarter-finals. They also reached the Asian Cup in 2011.

Given the limited capabilities of the qualifying Group, advancing to the 2019 Asian Cup should not be a difficult task for Jordan. After elimination from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, qualifying to the Asian finals is a priority but the squad has steadily slid down FIFA rankings and the team has had an inconsistent two years compared to 2013 when Jordan was on the verge of qualifying to the 2014 World Cup for the first time.

Jordan dropped two spots to 110th in the latest FIFA rankings and is still out of the Asian top 10. The team’s best FIFA ranking was 37th in 2004 while the lowest ranking was 152nd in 1996.

Compartively, during the 2014 World Cup qualifying journey, Jordan advanced to play then World’s 6th ranked Uruguay in an intercontinental qualifying tie for a place in the 2014 World Cup. It lost the home game 5-0 and held the former World Cup champs 0-0 in the away match. Jordan had never reached that far in World Cup qualifying since taking part in qualifiers. Round 3 had been the furthest Jordan reached in the past seven times in the qualifiers since 1986.

England’s Elson wins inaugural Jordan Ayla Golf Championship

By - Oct 07,2017 - Last updated at Oct 07,2017

AMMAN — England’s Jamie Elson has won the inaugural Jordan Ayla Golf Championship following a play-off in Aqaba in Saturday, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

On a dramatic final day, Elson and compatriot Luke Joy finished tied on seven-under-par at the top of the quality field, and Elson held his nerve in the extra holes to take the title.

After two tough days on the Greg Norman-designed course, low scoring rounds were recorded on Day Three, with Elson shooting a five-under 68 to pull level at the top with long-time leader, Joy, who carded a steady one-under final round. But it was Elson who came through in the play-off to take the title as the MENA Tour visited Jordan for the first time.

Round of the week though came from Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, whose 64 will stand as an impressive course record. He finished in the chasing pack on six-under. Jordan’s young sensation Shergo Kurdi, the youngest player in the field at just 13, shot a level par 73 on Day Three to finish on a respectable 13-over, and tied as top Arab finisher with Othman Almulla.

Jordan’s U-23 football team plays Thailand, U-19 leaves for the UAE

By - Oct 04,2017 - Last updated at Oct 04,2017

AMMAN — Jordan’s U-23 football team will play Thailand in two away friendlies this week, which come amid a training camp in Bangkok running until October 10.

Jordan is set to meet the hosts on Thursday before repeating the encounter on October 8 as the squad prepares for the 3rd Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship in 2018 as well as the qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Kingdom advanced to the AFC U-23 Championship after last month’s qualifiers in which it finished second behind Palestine from Group E, Oman moved from Group A, Iraq and Saudi from Group B, Qatar and Syria from Group C, Uzbekistan from Group D, Australia form Group F, North Korea from Group G, Malaysia and Thailand from Group H, South Korea and Vietnam from Group I and China and Japan from Group J.

In 2016, Jordan was eliminated from the quarter-finals of the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship and failed to make it to the top four and a possible Olympic slot as the continent’s top three advanced to the Rio Games football tournament. In the inaugural AFC U-22 Championship in 2014, Jordan took third place when it beat South Korea while Iraq won the title after defeating Saudi Arabia.

Jordan’s U-23 squad played the 1st West Asian U-23 Championship in 2015, and in 2014 the line-up represented the Kingdom at the Asian Games where it made to the quarter-finals.

Similarly, Jordan’s U-19 team will leave for the UAE on Thursday to play two friendlies in Dubai this week in the final phase of preparation for the AFC U-19 Championship Group E qualifiers alongside Syria, Palestine and the host Iran set from October 31 to November 8.

The Kingdom previously qualified to the Asian Championship four times and reached the FIFA Youth World Cup in Canada in 2007. Jordan finished fourth in 2006, but exited the first round in 2008 and 2010 and reached the quarters in 2012. Jordan failed to qualify to the 2014 and 2016 championships.

Earlier last month, Jordan’s U-16 team qualified to the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship last month after topping Group A qualifiers. Jordan joined group winners Tajikistan (Group B), Iran (Group C), Iraq (Group D), Yemen (Group E), North Korea (Group F), Indonesia (Group G), Australia (Group I), South Korea (Group H), Japan (Group J). Oman, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia moved as second placed top four teams.

Organised by the AFC, and held once every two years for Asian U-16 teams, the competition also serves as a qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, with the top four countries qualifying. Iraq is the reigning champ. Since the event kicked off in 1995, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and Oman have each won the title twice. Qatar, Iran, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Iraq won once. Jordan failed to qualify to the 2016 AFC U-16 Asian Championship.

AMMAN — Jordan has sent out a strong message to the big guns coming into town for this weekend’s third Arab Rugby 7s to be hosted in Amman that it intends to make home advantage pay off, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

Jordan has been drawn in a tough Group A alongside the UAE, Iraq and Libya, with Group B including Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt and Palestine.

It is the biggest rugby tournament the Kingdom has ever hosted and Jordan intends to put on a strong show for the big crowds expected to watch at the Petra University pitch.

“The sport is growing nicely here so a strong showing from Jordan this weekend will help us to promote it further.” Jordan, who has been training under English head coach Graeme Forbes, will meet Libya in its opener on Friday morning and then both the UAE and Iraq later in the day.

Depending on results, it will dictate on who Jordan plays on Saturday for the knock out stages. The two previous editions were held in Egypt and Morocco.

Serena Williams may lack intimidation factor, says Evert

SINGAPORE — New mother Serena Williams will lack some of her trademark intimidation factor when she returns to tennis, US great Chris Evert told AFP, warning that the 23-time Grand Slam-winner may find her comeback tough.

Williams, who gave birth to a baby girl in September, has said she is planning to defend her title at the Australian Open in January — just four-and-a-half months after becoming a mother.

But Evert said standards in women’s tennis had risen this year since Williams stepped off the tour, warning that the 36-year-old would be returning to a more competitive environment.

“I think that this whole year, the level has gone up because Serena hasn’t been dominant and the other players have all felt that they had a shot at it, at the No. 1 ranking,” Evert said, speaking in her role as an ambassador for this month’s WTA Finals in Singapore.

“I think that because of that challenge, they have improved in the physical and the mental part of it because they’ve all had a shot at it and they’ve pushed each other and that’s why there have been so many different winners. So I think the level will have improved by the time Serena comes back.”

Since Williams’ last match — January’s Australian Open final against her sister Venus — Jelena Ostapenko was a surprise winner of the French Open, Garbine Muguruza triumphed at Wimbledon and Sloane Stephens capped a brilliant return from injury to lift the US Open trophy.

Angelique Kerber, Karolina Pliskova and Muguruza, the current number one, have all held the top ranking this season, and Russia’s Maria Sharapova is back on the scene after returning from a 15-month drug ban.

Asian upsets

“There’s so many things we don’t know about Serena, how it’s going to feel to her being a mother coming back, is it going to distract her, is it going to motivate her more?” Evert said.

“Or how being a mother emotionally will pull at her and will it take her away from tennis? There’s so many elements here that we don’t know about Serena and her comeback,” she said, adding: “I think the other players have gotten better and I think they’re not going to be as intimidated when Serena comes back.”

Evert also dismissed concerns about the WTA Tour’s “Asian swing”, where top players have suffered a series of upsets as the season draws to a close — including at last week’s Wuhan Open, where only one seed reached the semifinals.

“This has been an issue that’s been ongoing as long as tennis has existed, and that is the fact that it’s such a physical, mental and emotional sport that by the time you get around to the end of the year... it’s understandable that players are starting to feel the effects,” she said.

“It has nothing to do with the Asian swing, you can find it in the men’s too,” Evert added. “The fact of the matter is, in the beginning of the year you’re rested and sharp and it’s a big year, with a lot of depth in the game and you’re getting a lot more tough matches than previous eras.

“So you really have to manage your schedule so that when it comes around to the fall, you want to be feeling fit and sharp and not injured. But that’s about managing the whole year, it’s not just about the Asian circuit.”

Jordan plays Oman in friendly football match

AMMAN — Jordan plays Oman on Wednesday in a friendly football match in Dubai, which comes amid preparations for resuming return leg 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Jordan will play two qualifiers this month and will seek to repeat their 4-1 win over Afghanistan on October 10 before playing Cambodia on October 14.

The Kingdom last held Bahrain 0-0 in a friendly and later beat Afghanistan to maintain Group C lead after earlier holding Vietnam 0-0 and scoring a 7-0 win over lowly Cambodia.

Vietnam is second in the group after they held Afghanistan 1-1 and beat Cambodia 2-1. Cambodia beat Afghanistan 1-0. The top two teams from each group move to the finals which will be held in the UAE in 2019.
