AMMAN — Jordanian women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are offered the opportunity to compete for a mentorship programme in the US under the TechWomen initiative.

The initiative, run for the 8th consecutive year by the US Department of State, brings emerging women leaders from Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East together with their professional counterparts in the US for a mentorship and exchange programme based in San Francisco.

During the five-week programme, participants engage in project-based mentorships at leading companies in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Silicon Valley, according to the initiative’s official website.

Several TechWomen fellows from previous editions held a meeting on Saturday to share their experience in the Silicon Valley with fellow Jordanian female entrepreneurs and businesswomen, recounting their journey from the candidate selection to their success as one of the five country teams awarded with socioeconomic seed grants.

The winning project, commended by Her Majesty Queen Rania in a meeting held in November last year, is a digital platform aimed at increasing female orphans' low enrollment rate in higher education institutions.

“They provided us with a training aimed at solving issues present in our own country and support the community, and we decided to help the female orphans to get to university after realising many of them are not able to do so,” TechWomen fellow Ala'a Agha Karss told The Jordan Times.

“Our objective was to engage these girls in higher education and we started by bridging them with companies and universities which could provide opportunities. But we also plan to make trainings, workshops and tech camps to teach them how to catch the fish rather than giving it to them,” the entrepreneur added.

During the meeting, the TechWomen fellows described their experience in the initiative as one that had a “tremendous personal impact” on their confidence and entrepreneurial skills, encouraging them to “develop new business ideas and partnerships after returning to Jordan”.

“I started my own company to develop mobile applications and I wanted to know more, fill the software gap that we have in the Middle East — that was my objective,” Ala’a said, elaborating on how she was selected to work with Twitter and help the company build the Arabic version of its mobile application.

“I had so many questions and so much to learn, and I told them about our user experience and the obstacles we face,” the entrepreneur said, expressing her gratefulness for the support she received during the weeks she spent in the Silicon Valley.

“It is an opportunity to grow up not only at the professional level, but at the personal one as well,” she continued, stressing the personal growth that comes with cultural exchange.

The team is now determined to “raise the Jordanian flag once again”, encouraging fellow emerging leaders to apply for the programme.

“We are looking for more candidates to be selected for the programme because we need more females in the technology ecosystem,” Ala’a said, elaborating on Queen Rania´s statement that “when you educate a woman, you educate her whole family”.

Making knowledge accessible: Students translate online scientific articles into Arabic

AMMAN — In a bid to raise societal awareness about various scientific topics in Arabic speaking countries, an intiative has been working to translate online medical content into Arabic to help Arabs better understand certain phenomena.

Launched in 2015 upon the idea of Said Ismail, a lecturer at the faculty of medicine, “Bel Arabi” seeks to spread knowledge and awareness in the medical and scientific fields through the provision of certified information available for all.

“People tend to look for medical information online without consulting a professional. But the information they get is not certified, and sometimes erroneous,” said Dania Tobasy, one of the 12 founders of the initiative.

Over 1,400 volunteers have so far helped translate some 1,400 medical terms, spread across all universities in Jordan. Both students and doctors have been striving to make quality and reliable information available to the Arab public.

"I remember how Dr Ismail told us that, when you look at Wikipedia, there are many more articles in Norwegian than Arabic, which is crazy because there is such a larger population of Arabic speakers in the world," Tobasy told The Jordan Times over the phone, adding that “people have the idea that Arabic is not a language for science, that it is better suited for literature but this is not true and we need to change that perception in society".

Divided into thematic sections, Bel Arabi includes translation of engineering articles, scientific topics such as biology, geology, nutrition or physics, among others.

The teams also focus on legal aspects of medicine, by clarifying common law topics for the population to understand.

“We have several projects going on, including an audiovisual library that provides a series of short videos with infographics, making it easier for people to understand through visual explanation rather than written articles,” Tobasy, who is also a project manager in one of the Bel Arabi projects, told The Jordan Times.

The medical series corrects mistakes and wrong medical beliefs, while the scientific one explains natural phenomena and theories. A character series presents major figures who contributed to science, literature and art.

“Because children use the Internet much more than in the past, we also developed the moral values series, which helps raise a respectful and aware generation,” the volunteer said.

To further enhance that knowledge and awareness among children, Bel Arabi has been conducting workshops in schools across the Kingdom, teaching students how to search information online in an "enlightened" way.

"When we were asking them questions, we realised there were a lot of wrong ideas spread among them, about the way to treat some injuries, or to behave in certain situations. Our training sought to help change those biases," Tobasy said.

A year after its launch, the Bel Arabi website has recorded over 700,000 visitors seeking information about a diversity of topics, with one of the articles being visited by at least 12,000 people.

The initiative, which started in Jordan in parallel with Palestine, with a team from Al Najah University, now counts volunteers across the region in Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, and soon to be in Libya, according to a Bel Arabi statement.

It won Kuwait’s best youth volunteering institution award in 2016 and was honoured as one of the three best youth institutions by the Jordanian Astronomical Society in 2017.

"The scientific and medical content translated to Arabic is very important for our children to better understand things and it is essential to bring glory back to one of the richest languages in the world," said Mazen Alnouti, a volunteer with the initiative.

Project to empower women leaders launched

By - Jan 08,2018 - Last updated at Jan 08,2018

AMMAN — The Arab Network for Civil Education (ANHRE) on Sunday launched the project “Empowering Women for Leadership”, aimed at encouraging women across the Kingdom to adopt gender-sensitive attitudes and get more involved in civil decision making.

The project, organised in partnership with Hivos International and supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, targets the governorates of Maan, Tafilah, Karak, Zarqa, Madaba, Balqa, Irbid, Jerash and Ajloun.

Running through September 2019, the initiative strives to establish a network of movements by women and community-based organisations (CBOs) aware of the local context in terms of gender, customs and cultural traditions related to women’s rights, according to a press release by ANHRE.

In addition, the project aims to integrate gender equality in the local public opinion and the political and social development process, stimulating participants to undertake community action and involve other women in public decisions and gender-based local plans.

“We feel like this is an opportunity to enhance local grassroots organisations working in Jordan,” ANHRE Executive Director Fattouh Younis told The Jordan Times in a recent interview, pointing out that “we are in a moment where several local plans are being prepared but little attention is being paid to the gender issues — so we are hoping to be able to influence the decision makers in a way so the gender issues are correctly addressed in each plan”.

The project was inaugurated yesterday with a training workshop addressing 18 leading women from the targeted governorates, during which participants acquired the knowledge needed to promote advocacy for gender equality and help develop the skills of other women.
“We have been analysing the communities since October last year so we could identify the leaders,” Younis said, noting that “specific criteria were used when choosing the governorates to target and the leaders that would attend the primary training.”

The trainees are now expected to transfer their knowledge to 40 women in their communities through two-day training sessions, reaching a total of 360 women across the Kingdom.

In addition, the workshop participants will launch over 50 community-based activities aimed at facilitating the networking and lobbying for positive messages in society, which will be identified through several project activities focused on strengthening women’s rights in the local plans.

“The point is to teach women how to identify the female needs and have them taken into account through a good relationship with the concerned stakeholders,” Younis said, pointing out that “this project is about adapting the local plans to the needs of the women rather than creating new plans”.

“They will learn how to collect the information on the needs of fellow women, how to address them and how to have them satisfied in the local plans,” the director added, stressing that “the idea is to look at the policies with a gender lens”.

AMMAN — Jordan and China on Monday signed an agreement for launching a Chinese cultural centre in Amman that will feature a wide range of activities promoting the Chinese culture.

The centre will also contribute to boosting cultural exchange between the two countries.

Under the agreement, which was signed by Culture Minister Nabih Shuqum and Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Pan Weifang, a Chinese-funded cultural centre will be established in the capital in the near future.

The centre will provide training courses on Chinese calligraphy, handicrafts, art, language, literature, books and movies, among other activities, the Chinese ambassador said during a press conference on Monday.

"A wide array of performances, exhibitions and cultural activities will be held by the centre to familiarise Jordanians with the Chinese culture and boost ties in this regard," the ambassador said, adding that the centre will function as a cultural bridge between the two nations.

"We decided to open this centre in Jordan as we are keen on increasing cooperation between the two countries, which enjoy deep-rooted ties and cooperation in all fronts," the Chinese diplomat noted.

For his part, the culture minister said Jordan is keen on increasing cooperation and cultural exchange with China, labelling the launch of the centre as a "milestone" in the cultural ties between the two countries.

The minister voiced appreciation for China's support to Jordan, saying they expect increased collaboration in the cultural field following the opening of the centre.
