Pressing need for a new global order

Mar 17,2018 - Last updated at Mar 17,2018

It is simply a calamity for the UN system of epic proportions that despite the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire in the whole of Syria, the onslaught on Eastern Ghouta by Syrian and Russian forces continued unabated till this very moment in time.

Ironically, Moscow itself also intervened after finding that no one is paying any attention to the UN truce order by "imposing" a few-hours humanitarian truce to allow for the escape of thousands of Syrian civilians, including children trapped by the relentless bombardments.

Even this very Russian intervention was not respected by neither Damascus nor Russian warplanes. The big question that comes up or should come up now in the aftermath of this growing travesty in the world order: What is to become of the international organisation and its main organs if such blatant disregard for their decisions continues unabated.

Countries which disregard UN resolutions, especially on matters of war and peace, must realise that by doing so they are driving the final nails in the coffin of the UN and its system. What adds insult to injury is the silence of the international community in the face of this open disrespect and defiance of UNSC resolutions.

There is hardly a whisper of disappointment by any of the so-called big five permanent members of the UNSC, on whose shoulders the international community counts for ending armed conflicts.

There is hardly any attention being made to the 1998 International Criminal Courts code of conduct by the major powers. This could be the beginning of the end of the UN system altogether and the major powers will have to blame themselves for this early demise.

International order is steadily and irrevocably being replaced by the law of the jungle before the very yes of the big five nations. There is now a pressing need for a new global order formed by like-minded nations after the UN declares itself a defunct organisation and a big failure.
