AMMAN — Voter turnout for the local and municipal elections reached 23.13 per cent by 5:00pm, as voters exceeded one million in number, according to figures of the Independent Election Commission (IEC).

Ajloun governorate witnessed the highest turnout with around 50 per cent of eligible voters, while the lowest voter turnout rate was in Amman (nearly 13 per cent), the figures showed.

Meanwhile, a group of citizens assaulted ballot boxes in Muwaqqar area, in southeast Amman, and have stolen electoral material from the voting station, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The IEC and security authorities are currently dealing with the situation, Petra added.

The Jordan Times was not able to get a comment from the IEC on this incident until this report was written.
