UNDP launches 'new healthy cell' at Irbid's landfill

AMMAN — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Wednesday initiated the establishment of the "first healthy cell" in Al Kaidar landfill, the second largest in Jordan, in "accordance with the best international standards", a UNDP statement said.
The project, which was funded by Canada, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the Joint Services Council in Irbid, is expected to finish by the end of September.
The lining of the new cell to prevent the leakage of toxic substances into the soil and nearby water resources is part of the project “Rehabilitation of Al Ekaider Landfill” which aims to manage solid waste in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner over the periof 2015-2019, according to the statement.
