SIGI calls for release of prisoners in Israeli jails

AMMAN — The Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI) Jordan called on the government to do more to accelerate the release of the administrative detainee Hiba Abdul Baqi Labadi, while urging the international community to continue to assume its full responsibilities to free all prisoners held by Israel.

The 24-year-old Labadi has been held in Al-Damon detention centre since August 20 with no charge or trial, SIGI said in a statement made available to The Jordan Times.

SIGI also called for the implementation of the Geneva Convention to protect prisoners and prohibit ill treatment or torture until release.

The women detained in Israeli prisons undergo torture, SIGI said, stating that 900 women and girls have been arrested over the last decades, 40 of whom are still in prison.

SIGI said the Economic and Social Council Resolution 2016/4 declared “deep concern” about the situation of Palestinian women under illegal occupation, citing the UN secretary general’s report on the conditions and provision of aid to Palestinian women submitted during the 62nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Grave violations of children’s rights continue at staggering rates.

From October 2016 to September 2017, 4,107 incidents were documented, in which 39,762 Palestinian children were arrested.

This included the killing of 19 Palestinian children, 3 girls and 16 boys, and the injury of 570 children, 33 girls and 537 boys. A total of 318 children, 10 of whom were girls, were being held in detention at the end of June 2017, according to the UN’s report.
