AMMAN — HRH Princess Dana Firas, president of the Petra National Trust (PNT) and president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS-Jordan), on Tuesday attended the opening ceremony of the first Hashemite University Tourism Festival titled “Zarqa in the Eyes of the Hashemites”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In her speech, the princess, who is also the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage, said that Zarqa has a historical, cultural and heritage importance.

She noted that discoveries documented the establishment of a civilisation dating back more than 4,000 in the city, which constituted a home of many civilisations.

Historically, Zarqa also served as a link between the cities of the Kingdom, allowing the flow of pilgrimage caravans and trade, she added.

Zarqa, with its diverse and distinct social fabric, is a source of Jordanian, Arab and international heritage and civilisation, she noted, calling for the preservation of cultural heritage, which is the basis for tourist attractions, as well as the preservation of a sustainable environment and natural heritage.

The princess also urged implementing local and international legislation related to heritage and environment preservation to achieve sustainable tourism.
