AQABA — The media can play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s environmental policies by shedding light on issues that need to be addressed, experts highlighted recently.
Whether through news reports or investigative journalism, journalists are key stakeholders in ensuring that the environment remains at the forefront of public concerns, environmentalists and reporters agreed at a training workshop organised by the UNDP in cooperation with the Environment Ministry.
The three Rio Conventions, which tackle biodiversity, climate change and desertification, were the main theme of the workshop, which aimed to equip media personnel with the necessary tools to report on the outcomes of the agreements and how Jordan is abiding by their provisions.
The Rio Conventions are the result of the Earth Summit, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
The two-day workshop was part of the “Mainstreaming Rio Convention Provisions into National Sectoral Policies”, a UNDP project that seeks to strengthen Jordan’s institutional capacities to design programmes and strategies in line with the conventions.
The project is supported by the Global Environment Facility in cooperation with the ministries of environment, planning, agriculture, water and energy.
