AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) was officially announced as a recipient of the UN Public Service Award in the Climate Action Category at the 2024 UN Public Service Forum, which concluded on Wednesday in South Korea.

Director of the Project Follow-up and Sustainability Unit at GAM Sajida Nsour received the award during the ceremony.

GAM was recognised for its project Improving Living Conditions in Amman and the Urban Micro-Lungs Initiative, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Thursday.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by the German Development Agency (GIZ) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and GAM, the project addresses the need for public green spaces in eastern Amman.

The project also focuses on improving green infrastructure, enhancing residents’ quality of life and biodiversity, and boosting social cohesion through participatory planning and design, Petra added.

The UN Public Service Awards recognise excellence in public service delivery and reward the creative achievements and contributions of public administrations worldwide. Since the first edition in 2003, over 300 initiatives have been awarded, according to www.un.org.

Co-organised by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of the Republic of Korea, the forum was held in Incheon, Republic of Korea between Monday and Wednesday.

GAM's project was one of 15 "ground-breaking" initiatives that were awarded out of 400 applications from 73 countries, the website added.
