Experts call for reform in handling the natural environment

AMMAN — As scientists around the globe reported a drop in air pollution levels over countries imposing coronavirus quarantine, experts called for sustainable, long-term reform in the way people handle the natural environment.

“There is no denying that the novel coronavirus has terrified people, young and old,” sociologist Hussein Khuzai told the Jordan Times on Monday.

As governments around the world have imposed curfews and instructed people to stay home, daily habits and cultural practices, some of which can “unhealthy,” have drastically changed, according to Khuzai.

“This global pandemic has brought people together and has unified the efforts of governments and people, particularly with respect to general hygiene, community support and public health,” Khuzai said.

What is certain is that the universal implications of the coronavirus have raised the awareness of people around the globe, Khuzai said, indicating that combating the virus requires a sense of awareness, compassion and self-discipline, regardless of people’s cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs.

“COVID-19 recognises no state borders,” Khuzai underlined.

Meanwhile, environmental consultant Shada Sharif said that the novel coronavirus has clearly caused positive environmental changes, especially that most air travel across the world has been halted to limit the spread of the killer virus.

“Restrictions on air travel has led to a reduction in aircraft engines’ emissions, including nitrogen dioxide, CO2 and other harmful gases which contribute to global warming,” Sharif told The Jordan Times.

Satellites have detected a major decline in air pollution amid the coronavirus outbreak, the environment consultant said, adding that governments need to establish a systematic and firm approach to sustainable environmental practices.

“I think that this is a chance for people to rethink, reassess and reprioritise their daily operations, practices and habits,” Sharif highlighted.
