AMMAN — Lower House Speaker Abdulkarim Dughmi, in the presence of Arab Parliament Speaker Adel Assoumi, on Monday inaugurated the headquarters of the high-level parliamentary action group for science and technology.

The permanent office of the group, headed by MP Khalid Abu Hassan, is tasked with discussing the strategic framework of the group, which entails establishing an Arab parliamentary network in the fields of science and technology, and building institutional partnerships with groups concerned with science and technology at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Dughmi said that the phase Arabs are going through now requires “exceptional efforts” to develop joint Arab action and enhance its political, legislative and economic efficiency, mainly in the technological and know-how aspects.

He also expressed hope for this step to contribute to developing the status of science, technology and innovation in implementing development plans in Arab countries, according to international standards and indicators that consider the specialty of the Arab culture.

Assoumi said that Jordan's hosting of the group’s headquarters highlights the important status of the Kingdom among Arabs and reflects its pivotal role in serving and enhancing the joint Arab action, praising His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts in defending Arab causes, mainly the Palestinian cause and improving the conditions of the entire Arab nation in various fields.

Abu Hassan said that investing in the human capital is the best way to realise development and progress inside communities, which requires Arabs to play a bigger role in the scientific and technological progress of the world.
