Cold front to bring chance for snow over weekend – JMD

AMMAN — A severe cold front dubbed "Al Jalmoud" will hit the Kingdom starting this weekend, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).

JMD said that the name Al Jalmoud (in English 'falling rock') was chosen because of its association with the intense cold and harsh nature of the front.

Director of the JMD Raed Al Khattab said that the cold wave is expected to reach Jordan and the eastern Mediterranean by the weekend and early next week, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and extreme cold, especially at night.

Khattab explained that the wave is being driven by a cold air mass from the Arctic, resulting in a significant drop in temperatures.

It will also bring variable rainfall, especially in the western parts of the Kingdom, as well as increased winds that could stir up dust in desert areas.

Snowfall is expected to begin on Saturday over higher elevations in both the north and south of Jordan, he added, noting that the chance of snow is expected to increase on Sunday night and Monday morning, affecting the northern, central, southern and eastern highlands.

"It is too early to predict the exact amount of snowfall," he said.

Khattab also stressed that the JMD is closely monitoring the situation and urged the public to stay informed and take the necessary precautions, especially in areas where rain, snow and strong winds are expected.
