Bayern Munich have trouble against English clubs

Apr 08,2014 - Last updated at Apr 08,2014

MUNICH — Champions League title holder Bayern Munich have not won a match since lifting the Bundesliga title with seven games to spare. That run includes the 1-1 draw at Manchester United in the first quarter-final leg and Bayern's first Bundesliga defeat this season, a 1-0 loss at Augsburg.

Bayern are seeking their third consecutive semi-final appearance, while United have not been in the last four since 2011.

Here are five things to know about Wednesday's match:

Injured and suspended

Bayern will be without the suspended Bastian Schweinsteiger, after the midfielder got a late red card in the first match. Midfielder Javi Martinez is also suspended because of three bookings.

Also unavailable for the German side are injured midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Xherdan Shaqiri but defender Dante is in contention after being suspended for the first leg.

For United, left back Patrice Evra is pushing for a recall having been absent for the first leg through suspension while striker Wayne Rooney is fighting to be fit after missing Saturday's 4-0 win at Newcastle in the Premier League with a badly bruised toe.

Rooney was present at training on Tuesday and United will be desperate for him to return as fellow striker Robin van Persie is also sidelined with a knee injury.

Missing fans

Bayern will be without the support of 700 fans, meaning that the stadium will have a capacity of 67,300.

UEFA ordered one of the sections in the ground to be closed after Bayern fans displayed anti-gay and political banners at the home match against Arsenal in the previous round.

Previous meetings

Bayern have five titles in the top club competition. United three, one of them won memorably over Bayern. In the 1999 final, United scored twice in injury time to snatch the title from the German side in a 2-1 win in Barcelona.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, while he was in charge at Barcelona, twice beat United in the final, in 2009 and 2011.

United have never won in Munich, with Bayern winning two and the other two ending in draws.

English trouble

Bayern have struggled at home against English opposition, especially this season. It lost to Manchester City 3-2 in the group stage and that ended a competition-record 10-match winning streak in the Champions League.

Bayern also drew 1-1 with Arsenal at home in the round of 16, after winning 2-0 in London. Bayern also lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal in the previous season's round of 16 but advanced to the next round on aggregate.

They also lost the 2011 final at home to Chelsea on penalties.

United tactics

The first leg may have finished all square but possession-wise, it was all Bayern. With United manager David Moyes content to sit back and rely on the counter-attack, the German visitors enjoyed 74 per cent possession and dominated territory.

Still, United had more shots on target than Bayern — 4 to 3 — and Moyes is likely to adopt the same tactics at the Allianz Arena in its bid to pull off either a high-scoring draw or a victory that will send his team through.

It will likely require another huge game from centre-back partners Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who produced one of their best performances of the season last week at Old Trafford.

"We can take a lot of confidence from the first leg against Bayern," United winger Ashley Young said. "We have to make sure we take our chances and hopefully we can defend exactly as we did in the first leg."

That Ras, Shabab Urdun seek to remain in competition in AFC Cup

By - Apr 07,2014 - Last updated at Apr 07,2014

AMMAN — Shabab Urdun play Iraq’s Erbil while That Ras face Lebanon’s Safa in Stage 5 of the 11th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup starting Tuesday.

Shabab Urdun’s match in Doha is a tough one. They have to win the match to remain in contention as they are now third in Group D after beating Kyrgyzstan’s Alay Osh 1-0 and 2-1. Shabab Urdun had a shaky start losing 2-0 to Bahrain’s Rifaa and going down 3-1 to group leaders Erbil.

On the other hand, That Ras, who will host Safa on Wednesday, have had a tough week with three matches in the Jordan Professional League and the Jordan Cup as well.

That Ras held Wihdat 1-0 in the Jordan Cup and coach Ahmad Abdul Qader noted his team was aiming to advance in the AFC Cup.

“A draw might be enough but we will play for a win,” he was quoted in the local media.

That Ras lately beat Tajikistan’s  Ravshan 5-1  and 3-2 and are now second in Group A. They had earlier scored an important 1-0 win over Oman’s Suweiq after losing to Safa 1-0 in their opening match.

Shabab Urdun won the second-tier Asian club competition in 2007 and last year won the league title for the second time. However, they have had an inconsistent form and are now 8th in the league. This season, Shabab Urdun were eliminated by Bahrain’s Al Hidd in the preliminary round of the AFC’s Asian Champions League. They also lost to Al Hidd in Round 1 of the Arab Football Association Clubs Cup.

Even ‘without strikers’ Chelsea could be too strong for PSG

By - Apr 07,2014 - Last updated at Apr 07,2014

LONDON –– Jose Mourinho has been claiming his side have no decent strikers but whatever he may think, Chelsea still have the firepower to beat French champions Paris Saint-Germain and reach the semifinals of the Champions League on Tuesday.

PSG, without injured spearhead Zlatan Ibrahimovic, do not actually need to score any goals at Stamford Bridge to knock Chelsea out following their 3-1 first leg win in Paris.

It probably will not be as simple as that though, as Chelsea know a 2-0 win will see them through on the away goals rule.

Even if his strikers again fail to impress Mourinho, Chelsea have an array of midfielders capable of swinging the tie in favour of the London club.

PSG do, though, start the match with a healthy advantage after Javier Pastore’s goal with the last kick of the game at the Parc des Princes last week gave them a buffer.

However, Chelsea at Stamford Bridge are a different proposition to the team that have lost their last three away matches in all competitions.

On Saturday they brushed Stoke City aside 3-0 in the Premier League, with all three goals coming from midfielders: Mohamed Salah, Willian and Frank Lampard, who has now scored 250 club goals for West Ham United, Swansea City and Chelsea.

He also has another 29 for England.

Saturday’s match was also their eighth successive home game with conceding a goal, and kept them two points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

It was their 77th unbeaten home league match in Mourinho’s two spells at the club, and they have also proved in the past in Europe, most recently against Napoli two seasons ago, that no task is large for them to overcome at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho was not in charge of Chelsea when they overturned a 3-1 first leg defeat by Napoli in the Round of 16 in 2012, winning 4-1 at home in the return match before going on to win the trophy in Munich.

While he has never lost a quarter-final tie with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan or Real Madrid, he has also never overturned a two-goal first leg deficit in European competition.

“We know it won’t be easy at home but we can turn the tie around,” midfielder Eden Hazard, who scored from the penalty spot and hit the woodwork in the first leg, said.

“We have proved we can do this before, and we can do it again next week.”

Winger Andre Schurrle, preferred to 50-million-pound striker Fernando Torres in Paris, agreed they were down after the defeat, but not out.

“It’s the worst time of the season to get results like this [but] we are a different team at Stamford Bridge with our fans behind us. It will be difficult but it is not impossible.”

There is some comfort in the absence of Ibrahimovic, who has scored 25 league goals this season in 30 appearances and played under Mourinho in Italy.

He is missing after hurting his hamstring in the first leg.

PSG, who beat Reims 3-0 on Saturday without Ibrahimovic, are 13 points clear of Monaco at the top of Ligue 1 and are confident they can overcome Chelsea without their talisman.

Ezequiel Lavezzi put on a man-of-the-match display at the Parc des Princes against Chelsea and Edinson Cavani scored the opener against Reims.

Both players were in the Napoli team that went out to Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate in 2012.

With Ibrahimovic sidelined, coach Laurent Blanc will field Cavani as number nine with Lavezzi and Lucas on the left and right flanks respectively.

Blanc insisted PSG will stay true to their style even without Ibrahimovic.

“Our philosophy and our tactics will not change,” he said.

The only uncertainty is regarding who will start as right back, although Gregory van der Wiel appeared comfortable after returning from a knee injury against Reims, providing the cross for Cavani’s opener.

Real with comfortable 3-0 lead in Dortmund

By - Apr 07,2014 - Last updated at Apr 07,2014

DORTMUND — Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund met four times last season in the Champions League and Dortmund won both home games, including a 4-1 win that led to Real’s elimination in the semi-finals.

This time, Madrid holds a 3-0 lead from the first leg of the quarter-finals and the nine-time champion has never lost a Champions League tie after winning the opening leg 3-0.

Here are five things to know before Tuesday’s match:

Ronaldo targets Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo needs just one goal to set the record for the most goals in a single Champions League season and pass Lionel Messi’s milestone.

The Ballon d’Or winner exited last week’s 3-0 win over Dortmund with a hurting left knee after he found the net for a 14th time this campaign in Europe’s top club competition.

Ronaldo sat out his team’s Spanish league match on Saturday to recover, but he is back in the squad after training with his teammates on Sunday.

Plan B: Bale

If Ronaldo doesn’t make it back in time, Madrid can still field an imposing starting 11 featuring Gareth Bale as it searches for its fourth straight semifinal appearance.

Ronaldo has missed eight games this season, and Real Madrid have yet to lose once without him.

Bale scored another long-range goal for Madrid in its commanding 4-0 win at Real Sociedad this weekend while Ronaldo rested his leg.

The Wales winger has scored four goals in his last three games and has netted 18 times in all competitions, since his 100-million-euro move from Tottenham.

“Last Wednesday’s match at home was great, we played well and deserved to win, but it will be a different game in Dortmund,” said Bale. “They’ll come out fighting and we have to approach it like any other game, looking to win it and seal our place in the semifinals.”

Scoring run

Madrid have scored in 22 consecutive away matches in the Champions League. But they have also lost four of them — and three in Germany.

Even if they again loses 4-1 as they did last season in Dortmund, Real will advance on away goals.

Lewandowski back

Borussia Dortmund’s striker Robert Lewandowski is back after sitting out the 3-0 defeat in Madrid through suspension. Lewandowski scored all four goals in last season’s 4-1 home win over the Spanish side. The Poland striker tops the Bundesliga with 17 goals and has scored six in the Champions League.

His value to Dortmund is also evident from another statistic — he has set up 11 goals in the Bundesliga and three in the Champions League.

Dortmund has won its last two Bundesliga matches by coming from behind in the second half. Coach Juergen Klopp believes there is still some hope against Real.

“We won’t give anything away,” Klopp said. “On Tuesday we want to play two second halves, and then we’ll see.”

Injury list

Dortmund have been hit by a series of serious injuries that have ended the season of several key players, including defender Neven Subotic and midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski, among others. At least six players from the lineup that beat Real 4-1 last season will be missing from Tuesday’s match.

In addition, captain Sebastian Kehl is suspended.

Dortmund’s midfielder Nuri Sahin is technically still a Madrid player, playing on loan against his former club.

Madrid will be without defenders Marcelo and Alvaro Arbeloa, forward Jese Rodriguez, and midfielder Sami Khedira, all because of injury.

'My Wonder Football Wall' project inaugurated in Kyrgyzstan

By - Apr 06,2014 - Last updated at Apr 06,2014

AMMAN — The Asian Football Development Project (AFDP) has teamed up with the English Premiere League to support "My Wonder Football Wall" — a graffiti project led by the Federation of Kyrgyz Republic following the building of new pitches for women's football in Kyrgyzstan, a statement from the office of HRH Prince Ali, the founder of AFDP, said Sunday. The project, officially inaugurated through a celebratory football tournament in Bishkek, is an extension of Kyrgyz women’s football projects funded by AFDP and its partner PepsiCo. Through this initiative, the AFDP seeks to create "more cheerful and inviting spaces for girls and women of all age groups", the statement said.

Wheelchair champion wins two ultra marathon races

By - Apr 06,2014 - Last updated at Apr 06,2014

DEAD SEA — Wheelchair marathon champion Ali Sawalmah won the 21-kilometre and 10-kilometre races at the 21st annual run of the International Dead Sea Ultra Marathon on Friday, organised by Run Jordan. Sawalmeh dominated the two races after clocking 1h16m41s in the 21km event and 23m39s in the 10km. "This is really exciting to win two races in one event. I am proud of my achievement and dedicate my win to Jordan…," Sawalmah told The Jordan Times. Around 4,000 runners took part in the marathon. "It was very challenging for me as the competition was really tough but we had the weather on our side and we really enjoyed the marathon," Sawalmah added.

Liverpool beat West Ham 2-1 to retake top spot

By - Apr 06,2014 - Last updated at Apr 06,2014

LONDON — Liverpool reclaimed top spot in the Premier League after two penalties from captain Steven Gerrard helped his team beat West Ham 2-1 Sunday, The Associated Press reported.

Gerrard put Liverpool ahead from the spot in the 44th minute after West Ham defender James Tomkins handled a flick by Luis Suarez in the area.

However, the lead didn't last long.

In injury time, West Ham defender Guy Demel equalised when Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet spilled a cross following a challenge from former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll.

The assistant referee initially signalled for a foul on Carroll, but referee Anthony Taylor overruled him after a lengthy discussion, despite protests from the Liverpool players.

Carroll had the best chance in the early exchanges of the second half, hitting the bar with a 62nd-minute header.

Gerrard scored his second in the 71st minute after Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan was adjudged to have been brought down by West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, according to AP.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was held scoreless but proved a constant menace to the West Ham defence and rattled the bar with two audacious chips in either half.

Liverpool's ninth straight victory put them two points ahead of Chelsea. Manchester City are another two points behind but they have two games in hand, and travel to Liverpool next Sunday in a game that may play a crucial role in determining which team wins the title.

Much of Liverpool's success this season has been based on their form at home. However, they have now won six of their last seven league games away.

In an earlier match, Everton crushed a woeful Arsenal side 3-0 at Goodison Park to boost their chances of a top four finish and a possible place in next season's Champions League for the first time in nine seasons, Reuters reported.

Everton's sixth successive Premier League win based on an outstanding all-round team performance meant that although they stayed in fifth place, one behind Arsenal, they are only a point behind the Gunners with a match in hand in the tight race for fourth spot.

Arsenal have 64 points from 33 matches and Everton 63 from 32, followed by Manchester United (57 from 33).

Goals from Steven Naismith, who followed up a rebound off the legs of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to score after 14 minutes, a superb solo effort from Romelu Lukaku after 34 and a third after 62 when a Kevin Mirallas shot went in off Arsenal's former Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta for an own goal, sent Arsenal crashing to another heavy defeat on Merseyside two months after they lost 5-1 at Liverpool.

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard told the BBC: "It was one of the signature performances since I have been at the club. The fans have waited all season for a blockbuster performance and this was the one.

"We would like to believe we can finish in the top four — we have got to believe that we can."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez told the BBC: "Today we had to be perfect in everything we did... It was a very good performance, to have a clean sheet through the 90 minutes with the quality
Arsenal has."

His Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger said: "Everton were better, sharper and deserved to win. The only time we looked like getting back into the game was in the second half, then we gave an easy goal away and that
 was it."

"It will be difficult to finish in the top four but first we have to focus on the quality of our performance."

Arsenal last failed to play in the Champions League in 1997-98, but in this form, their record is under serious threat and the only bright moment in a gloomy afternoon was the re-appearance of Aaron Ramsey as a second half substitute after being out for almost three months injured, Reuters said.

Everton took part in the qualifiers in the 2005-06 season but were eliminated and have never played in the Champions League proper.

Arsenal will need a massive improvement in the closing weeks of the season to stop Everton finishing above them.

They posed little to worry the Everton defence apart from a rasping late shot from substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain which Howard tipped on to the bar.

Their gloom was completed with Mathieu Flamini's 10th booking of the season ruling him out of next weekend's FA Cup semifinal against holders Wigan Athletic at Wembley.

Yaya Sanogo had the ball in the net in the dying minutes, but even then the luck went against the hapless Gunners as he was ruled offside when he may have been onside.

Mercedes can lead Formula One changes, says Ecclestone

Apr 06,2014 - Last updated at Apr 06,2014

MANAMA — Formula One needs to make rule changes to placate angry fans but leaders Mercedes must not be punished for doing a better job than their rivals, commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Sunday.

"Mercedes, without any doubt, have done a better job and they shouldn't be punished for doing a good job. We shouldn't change the regulations to punish them," he told reporters at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The ditching of the ear-splitting old V8 engines and ushering in of a quieter V6 turbo era, with an emphasis on fuel economy and hybrid technology, has upset some spectators and promoters.

Ferrari and champions Red Bull, both playing catch-up to the Mercedes-powered teams, have been outspoken in their criticism and demands for change — with rivals accusing them of playing politics to mask their failings.

Ecclestone talked to International Automobile Federation President Jean Todt and Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo at the Sakhir circuit.

"We have to [change], for sure. I don't think the way things are at the moment are acceptable to the public," the Briton said.

"People buying tickets to come here, or go somewhere else, are expecting to see what Formula One used to be. What is important is that the teams know the problem, and the engine manufacturers know the problem, and they're trying to sort it," added Ecclestone, who said promoters were fretting about ticket sales.

He ruled out a suggestion, that has been raised by Montezemolo in the past, for races to be shortened but said the noise could be addressed and the fuel allowance of 100 kilogrammes increased to 110 kilogrammes.

Montezemolo, surrounded by a scrum of reporters when he arrived later, said changing the “music” of the engines and allowing more fuel were steps in the right direction in the short term.

"I fully understand the Mercedes position," said the Italian, accepting also that Ferrari needed to be more competitive under the existing rules.

"It's not a question to change the rules now. But for the future, it's a different situation," he added.

"We have to look ahead and change something without interfering with today's rules because if somebody is in the lead, as is Mercedes, it's absolutely correct not to change something now."

Ecclestone has been a long-standing critic of the new engines but he recognised the technology and amount of power they produced from so little fuel was "incredible".

"But I don't think that's Formula One business. They should do it in touring cars or something, but not in Formula One," he told reporters.

He said Mercedes, who have won the first two races from pole position, would lead the way off the track as well as on it without their performance being compromised.

"Mercedes are going to be behind it [the change]. I think they'll be the leaders," he said. "We can do these things without them particularly doing that [losing their advantage]," said the Briton.

"I think everybody is complaining, even Mercedes. They don't like people not being happy."

Some senior team officials have accused rivals of talking down the sport, or “doing a Ratner” — an allusion to the British jeweller who mocked his own products in a 1991 speech and saw his business lose £500 million ($829.50 million) in value.

Ecclestone disagreed with that assessment: "People have an opinion, that's all," he said.

My job is to force Mourinho to play me, says Torres

By - Apr 05,2014 - Last updated at Apr 05,2014

LONDON –– Chelsea's £50 million ($82.94 million) misfit Fernando Torres accepts that it is his responsibility to force himself into a position where the Spaniard is manager Jose Mourinho's number one striker.

Torres told an English newspaper on Saturday that he wanted to see out the remaining two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge and was confident he could still be in Brazil with Spain for the World Cup finals in June.

Mourinho, who has been highly critical of his strikeforce this season, said on Friday that 30-year-old Torres still had a place at Chelsea despite putting the striker on the bench for this week's Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.

"[He] puts me on the pitch when he thinks I am the best option and on the bench when he thinks I am not the best option," Torres said in an interview in the Independent on Saturday.

"My aim is to try to make him feel I am always the best option for him.”

"You have to have ways to adapt to this situation. Blame the manager? Blame your teammates? Blame everyone? Or ask from yourself a bit more. I think I can do better.”

"I can make Jose think I am the best option. That is what I have to do every day in training, all the matches. I just ask of myself the responsibility."

Torres has scored nine goals in 33 appearances this season and has rarely approached the heights of his time at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool since breaking the British record transfer fee to join Chelsea in 2011.

Brazil Hope

"You have to prove yourself every day," Torres added. "You have to live for today. Three years ago? Five years ago? It's today.

"If the manager thinks there is another player better than you he is going to play and this is the way.”

"You have to try to improve and keep fighting and try to change the manager's mind. Hopefully one day Jose can say 'This is my striker, he is going to be my striker' like he does with some of the players who have won the appreciation from him."

That short-term outlook could also help Torres in his ambition to return to the Spain squad for the World Cup, having helped his country to successive major championship triumphs at Euro 2008 and 2012 as well as the 2010 World Cup.

"Of course I can make it. Football is about the last month and a half and that is going to be very important," he said.

"I love to play for my country and I have been lucky enough to be in two Euros and a World Cup.”

"We made history. No one did it before, three in a row, and we want to do the fourth. It would be amazing for this generation.”

"So I would like to be there, but if I want to be there I have to do well for Chelsea. Score goals and win trophies."

England will be brave and risk defeat — Hodgson

By - Apr 05,2014 - Last updated at Apr 05,2014

LONDON –– England manager Roy Hodgson has promised to be brave, risk defeat and allow his talented young players to express themselves at the World Cup in Brazil in June.

Under his predecessor Fabio Capello, England were sterile and defensive at the previous edition in South Africa four years ago before being knocked out by Germany in the last 16.

"The way we will play in Brazil will be a continuation of the way we have been trying to play over the last year or so," Hodgson told Talksport Radio on Friday.

"If you take the front players who played in the last game, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck, and add them to people like Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, just to name five players off the top of my head, they have great technical ability, pace and athleticism.

"We will be brave and we will believe in ourselves and we will risk defeat. We won't try and sneak our way through the games," Hodgson added.

"With the type of players we've got that wouldn't suit us. I think we've got to allow the players to express themselves in the same way as you see them express themselves in the Premier League."

England have been drawn against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in World Cup Group D.

Hodgson also said veteran defender Ashley Cole's lack of first-team football at Chelsea would not affect his chance of being picked in the World Cup squad.

The 33-year-old Cole, England's most-capped fullback with 107 appearances, has lost his place to Spanish international Cesar Azpilicueta at Stamford Bridge this season.

"It does concern me," said Hodgson. "If we go back to England teams 10 years ago it would have been unthinkable for anybody to play who wasn't a guaranteed starter at his club.

"We've had to accept that over the last two or three years there has been an amazing amount of talent coming into the Premier League from abroad.

"It's been unfortunate for Ashley this season but I know him well enough so that won't necessarily affect my decision making when it comes to selecting the team," Hodgson added.

"It's one of the responsibilities as national team manager to pick who you think are the best players, irrespective of where they play or how much they play."
