Baqlah re-writes the Jordan record books

By - Dec 11,2016 - Last updated at Dec 11,2016

AMMAN — Jordan’s Olympic swimmer Khader Baqlah has rewritten the Kingdom’s record books following a tremendous showing at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Windsor, Canada, according to a statement from the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

The 18-year-old completed his programme with yet another Jordan record in the 100m freestyle, meaning he set new national records in no less than five disciplines over the past five days. Baqlah’s latest achievement last night was a brilliant 48.53 seconds in the 100m, smashing his previous best of 49.95.

He was one of the youngest swimmers in the field and yet his time was 36th fastest from the 150 entered. The record follows other new short course records set for the 400m, 200m and 50m freestyle, and the 100m butterfly.

Unfortunately, his times were not fast enough to reach the finals but it again showed that Jordan is catching up with the world’s best. It was not surprising that Baqlah said after his latest record: “I will always remember the year 2016!”

Two Jordan golds at Asian Championships

By - Dec 11,2016 - Last updated at Dec 11,2016

AMMAN — Two Jordanian ju jitsu fighters are sitting on top of Asia on Sunday, with one waiting to see if she is also sitting on top of the world, according to a statement from the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

Both Lama Qubbaj and Haider Rashid won their Asian weight titles over the weekend, with Lama adding the continental honour to the World Championship title she won last month. She now has an anxious wait to see whether she will end the year as the No. 1 ranked +70kg fighter in the world.

Qubbaj was joined at the 1st Asian Ju Jitsu Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, by Rashid, who won his four matches by submission against opponents from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Kurdistan. It completes a memorable year for ju jitsu which has fast established itself as one of Jordan’s fastest growing sports.

Kane ready for a first against Mourinho’s Man United

Tottenham Hotspur’s striker is not short of confidence

LONDON — Harry Kane has yet to score against Manchester United in the Premier League but that could end at the sixth attempt on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur’s England striker is not short of confidence ahead of the trip to Old Trafford, having scored twice against Swansea City in a 5-0 thrashing at White Hart Lane last weekend after agreeing a new six-year deal.

Victory for fifth-placed Tottenham would send them nine points clear of Jose Mourinho’s side, who are sixth, and leave United with a yawning gap between them and a place in the Champions League next season.

Tottenham beat United 3-0 at White Hart Lane last April, before Mourinho took over in May, but Kane did little to stand out — to the amusement of Reds’ fans on social media and his own frustration.

United, who won 1-0 at home in August 2015, are the only club other than Watford and now-relegated Cardiff City, among the 24 opponents Kane has played against in the top flight, that have yet to see the Tottenham striker on the scoresheet.

The 23-year-old, last season’s top scorer who has been linked regularly to United in transfer speculation, is back in dangerous form having gone five league games without a goal at the end of last season and the start of the current campaign.

He has scored seven in his last six Premier League outings and will be keen to get Spurs moving back into contention with Chelsea breaking away at the top.

The North Londoners, who played CSKA Moscow in the Champions League at Wembley on Wednesday, are visiting United at a good time with their hosts having drawn their last three games 1-1 after conceding late equalisers.

Mourinho, whose side are at Ukraine’s Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League on Thursday, left Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Michael Carrick out of his squad to keep them fresh for Sunday.

“The players I had to leave out to protect [them],” the Portuguese told reporters on Wednesday.

Chelsea, three points clear of closest rivals Arsenal and four ahead of Liverpool, are at home to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday in a match that could bring them a ninth win in a row.

Liverpool host West Ham United the same day at Anfield while unbeaten Arsenal, who racked up a record 14 league wins in a row up to August 2002, should have an easy afternoon at the Emirates on Saturday when Stoke City come to town.

Stoke have not won at Arsenal since 1981, long before the Premier League came into existence, and have yet to take a point at the Emirates.

Champions Leicester City, teetering on the brink of the relegation zone with just 13 points from 14 games, are at home to Manchester City, who have striker Sergio Aguero starting a four-match ban, on Saturday.

At the bottom end of the table, Swansea City host resurgent Sunderland on Saturday with visiting striker Jermain Defoe bagging a hat-trick in last season’s fixture.

Jordanian runners take advanced spots at Ayla Red Sea Half Marathon

By - Dec 10,2016 - Last updated at Dec 10,2016

AMMAN — The 12th edition of the Ayla Red Sea Half Marathon concluded on Friday with Jordanian runners taking advanced spots in an event which witnessed the participation of more than 2,000 runners from all over the world.

Nasser Shraideh, the chief commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, gave the starting signal at the Ayla Oasis project for the 21km, 10km Fun Run and 4.2km Children’s Race.

Lina Al Kurd, the general manager of Run Jordan, told The Jordan Times it was a success.

“This year the event is under the slogan “Run for a Cause” to highlight an important aspect of all Run Jordan events, with 20 per cent of the ticket sales go to charity. We thank everyone who worked on making this event a success especially the families who came and enjoyed such a great event,” she said.

“Also, this year Run Jordan established cooperation agreements with several societies that cater for the physically handicapped in various parts of the Kingdom including: Al Yasmeen Society for the Down syndrome, the Disabled Child Care Society in Irbid in addition to Ajyal Society for the physically handicapped based in Aqaba,” she added.

According to Kurd, two new trophies have been added to the children’s race categories for the first place winner in the wheelchair category and the Down’s syndrome category.

Sevilla and Porto take last slots for round of 16

ROME — Sevilla and FC Porto grabbed the final two spots in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday, while Juventus and Borussia Dortmund finished up with the debatable advantage of being group winners.

A team that finishes top of its group will be drawn against a runner-up when the knockout stage begins — which usually offers a clear advantage.

Not this year.

With the likes of titleholder Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain hanging around as possible opponents in Monday’s draw, group winners will be wary.

“When we reached the final in Berlin [in 2015] we had finished second in our group,” Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta said. “When we finished first last season we were eliminated [by Bayern Munich].

“The important thing in the Champions League is the draw. We’ll rely on destiny,” Marotta said before a 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb made sure the Bianconeri would finish atop Group H.

Group E

Bayer Leverkusen finally scored from a penalty this season, although they needed help from the opposing goalkeeper, in a 3-0 victory over Monaco.

Both teams were already assured of advancing to the Round of 16 before the final group matches and Monaco fielded a youthful side missing many regulars. Monaco finished on 11 points, one more than Leverkusen, which for the first time ended a group stage undefeated.

Meanwhile, Tottenham won at Wembley Stadium at the third attempt, beating CSKA Moscow 3-1 to secure third place and a consolation spot in the Europa League.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane were on target as Tottenham won for only the second time in six games on its return to Europe’s elite competition after a five-year absence.

Group F

A late equaliser by substitute Marco Reus earned Borussia Dortmund a 2-2 draw against defending champion Real Madrid and first place in the group.

Dortmund also set a group-stage record with 21 goals as they stormed back from being 2-0 down.

Karim Benzema had scored a goal in each half at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to give Madrid a convincing lead, but forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled the German side closer in the 61st and Reus netted the decisive equaliser in the 88th.

Madrid were left with the consolation prize of matching the club’s 34-game unbeaten streak that had stood since the late 1980s.

Dortmund finished the group with 14 points, two more than Madrid. Legia Warsaw, which defeated Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in Poland, finished third with four points to qualify for the Europa League.

Cristiano Ronaldo was held scoreless for the fourth straight time in the Champions League, again failing to become the first player to score 100 goals in European competitions. His current total is 98.

Group G

FC Porto breezed into the knockout phase with a 5-0 rout of Leicester, which have already secured top spot in the group on their competition debut.

Porto’s emphatic victory over the much-changed English champions ensured they were not overtaken by FC Copenhagen, which beat Club Brugge 2-0 to finish with a Europa League place.

Yacine Brahimi scored twice, including a penalty, while Jesus Corona, Yacine Brahimi and Diogo Jota also netted.

Leicester finished two points ahead of Porto with 13 points from six games. In its Premier League title defence, Leicester have 13 points from 14 games to sit two points above the relegation zone.

Group H

Gonzalo Higuain ended his scoring drought as Juventus beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 to win the group.

Juventus have already qualified for the knockout stages, but the victory secured top spot ahead of Sevilla, which also advanced following a 0-0 draw with Lyon.

Higuain blasted a strike into the top left corner from the edge of the area after being set up by Mario Lemina early in the second half.

It was Higuain’s first goal since scoring on November 2 against Lyon.

Higuain joined Juventus before the season from rival Napoli for an Italian-record 90 million euros ($100 million) after scoring 36 Italian-league goals last season to break a 66-year-old Serie A record.

Defender Daniele Rugani added another for Juventus with a header from a corner taken by Miralem Pjanic.

Juventus finished with 14 points, three ahead of Sevilla. Lyon have eight points and will play in the Europa League, while Dinamo lost all six matches.

Jazira lead professional league

Wihdat, Ahli lose in Jordan Cup

By - Dec 08,2016 - Last updated at Dec 08,2016

AMMAN  — Vital matches are ahead in Week 6 of the Jordan Professional Football League kicking off Friday with Jazira atop standings as rivals improved their positions during the past two weeks.

The past week saw teams take a break from the league as the Jordan Cup kicked off with Shabab Urdun beating Hussein and Faisali beating Ahli 2-1, Jazira upsetting Wihdat 3-1, Ramtha beating Sahab 4-0, That Ras scoring a 2-0 win over Sarih and Manshieh upsetting Baqa’a 3-2.

In the league, Jazira beat Hussein 5-2 to regain their lead and next play Baqa’a, who are 11th after their 2-1 defeat to Sahab. Shabab Urdun, who briefly took the lead on goal difference, are now second after their 3-2 loss to Ahli, and will next play Faisali in a decisive match for both. Faisali whose first win was 2-1 over Ahli last week have slowly improved up the standings and are now fifth after they beat That Ras 1-0.

Ahli moved up to six spots to third after a 3-2 win over Shabab Urdun and next play Wihdat, who beat Manshieh 2-1 to move up to fourth. That Ras are last and next play 9th placed Sahab while Manshieh, who are 7th play Sarih.

The two neighbours from the north play on Friday with Hussein, who are now 6th, playing Ramtha, who beat Sarih 5-3 to move up a spot to 10th.

Jazira have so far scored three convincing wins over former champions Faisali, Wihdat and Shabab Urdun. Their striker Syrian Mardig Mardigian is league top scorer with four goals.

On the other hand, traditional leading teams are in disarray and changes in coaching positions have taken their toll with disappointing results so far. Faisali removed Iraqi coach Tha’er Jassam, who came shortly after Jamal Abu Abed left the post at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, the Jordan Football Association has moved towards more stringent regulations and fines in the past two weeks for unsportsmanlike conduct of fans or players.

New regulations will activate provisions banning team fans from attending matches and removing fans who cause problems from stadia.

Faisali were fined JD1,000 following their match against Ahli, while Wihdat were fined JD800 and Hussein JD400. This followed heavy fines the week before after Ramtha fans caused damage at Amman International Stadium, which was recently fully renovated to host the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

This season, Ahli made history when they beat reigning league champs Wihdat 2-1 to win the 34th Super Cup. In the Jordan Football Association Shield, Shabab Urdun scored a major 5-1 win over Faisali.

AMMAN — More than 2,000 runners from around the world are expected to take part in the Ayla Red Sea Half Marathon on Friday.

“We hope that everyone will be encouraged to join the crowd in the event which is not only organised to spread awareness about healthy lifestyle but also encourages people to be part of helping people in need,” she added. Final preparations are being made for the last running event organised by Run Jordan in 2016. “We can say we had a very good year, The Ayla event will be the last for this season.

Baqlah smashes Jordan record at World Championships

By - Dec 07,2016 - Last updated at Dec 07,2016

AMMAN — Jordan’s Olympic swimming star Khader Baqlah has smashed the Jordan short course record in the 400 metres by more than seven seconds at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) taking place in Windsor, Canada, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

The 18-year-old has been closing in on the world’s fastest swimmers over the past 12 months in the 50m pool, but showed that he is also speeding up in the 25m version of the sport. Baqlah finished fourth from 10 swimmers in his heat in a time of 3 minutes 50.58 seconds, smashing the previous best of 3:57.21.

It was not fast enough to qualify through to the final, but it was another reassuring sign that Jordan is catching up fast with the best. The championships continue through to Sunday with Baqlah hoping to break more Jordan records.

Thompson has 60 points in 3 quarters, Warriors beat Pacers

OAKLAND, California — Golden State’s Klay Thompson had 60 points, an NBA season high and the most by a Warriors player in 42 years, as the hosts whipped Indiana 142-106 on Monday.

Thompson scored 40 by half-time in just 18-plus minutes. He had a career-best 60 points through three quarters and called it a night, sitting down with 1:22 left in the period.

Golden State is a game ahead of San Antonio for the Western Conference’s best record, after the Spurs pulled off a come-from-behind win against Milwaukee, aided by a late goaltending call.

Cleveland, which is setting the pace in the East, won a tight game at Toronto while Houston hung on to edge Boston when a Celtics shot on the buzzer went astray.

Thompson joined Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry and Joe Fulks as the only Warriors to score 60 points in a game. Barry was the last to do so, going off for 64 in a 1974 game against Portland.

Thompson shot 21 for 33 and 8 of 14 on 3-pointers and converted 10 of 11 free throws in 29 minutes.

Kevin Durant added 20 points for Golden State in another display of impressive passing. The Warriors’ 15 first-quarter assists matched a club record and they wound up with 45 total — two off the franchise record.

San Antonio’s LaMarcus Aldridge was credited for the go-ahead basket with 21.2 seconds left after Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo was whistled for goaltending and the Spurs won 97-96 at the Bucks.

The hosts had one last shot to retake the lead, but Mirza Teletovic missed an open 3-pointer from the right corner with 3.9 seconds left. Aldridge secured the rebound and the Spurs ran out the clock.

San Antonio’s record of 12 straight road wins to start the season looked over when Milwaukee took an early 15-point lead but the Spurs rallied to push that streak to 13.

Jabari Parker had 23 points, picking up the slack for much of the fourth quarter for the Bucks with Antetokounmpo on the bench with five fouls.

Cleveland’s LeBron James scored 34 points to offset an injury to J.R. Smith and won 116-112 at Toronto.

Smith injured his left knee in the first quarter after landing on a jump shot and hobbled to the dressing room in considerable pain.

The win was the Cavaliers’ third straight this season against the Raptors, the team they beat in last season’s Eastern Conference finals. It also prevented Toronto from leapfrogging Cleveland into first place in the Eastern Conference.

DeMar DeRozan had 31 points for Toronto, which had its six-game winning streak snapped.

Boston’s Al Horford missed a shot on the buzzer, and Houston hung on to pip the Celtics 107-106.

The game was tied before James Harden — who finished with 37 points — scored five straight points to make it 107-102 with less than a minute remaining. Avery Bradley made a jump shot and Harden received a flagrant 1 foul for elbowing Marcus Smart in the face. Smart made both free throws before Isaiah Thomas missed a lay-up.

But Houston knocked the ball out of bounds with 5.2 seconds left, giving Boston one last chance. Horford drove into the lane, but his shot rolled off the rim and Harden grabbed it to secure the victory.

Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook extended his streak of triple-doubles to six games, leading the Thunder over skidding Atlanta 102-99.

Westbrook scored 32 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 12 assists, giving him the NBA’s longest streak of triple-doubles since Michael Jordan had seven in a row in 1989.

Westbrook’s run has sparked a six-game winning streak by the Thunder. He has reached double figures in all three categories in half of the Thunder’s 22 games.

By contrast, Jordan had 15 triple-doubles for the entire 1988-89 season.

Atlanta rallied down the stretch, but Westbrook closed it out for the Thunder. He finished with 27 second-half points to send the Hawks to their seventh straight loss and 10th defeat in the last 11 games.

It is the longest losing sequence for the Hawks since they dropped eight in a row in February 2014.

Portland’s Damian Lillard had 30 points to lead the Trail Blazers over Chicago 112-110.

CJ McCollum scored 24 for the Trail Blazers, who opened a five-game trip.

Dwyane Wade scored 34 points for the Bulls, who played without point guard Rajon Rondo, who was serving a one-game team suspension which Chicago did not publically explain.

Utah overcame the absence of ill coach Quin Snyder to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 107-101 for their sixth win in seven games.

Memphis’ Marc Gasol had 28 points, including a tying 3-pointer with 7 seconds left in regulation, to go with 11 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Grizzlies over New Orleans 110-108 in double overtime.

Charlotte took advantage of a knee injury to Dallas centre Andrew Bogut late in the first quarter to dominate the paint and the boards in rallying from an 11-point, third-quarter deficit to beat the Mavericks 109-101.

Denver’s Danilo Gallinari scored 24 points and Will Barton had 22, including a big 3-pointer late, to lead the Nuggets to a 106-98 win at Philadelphia.

Washington’s John Wall scored 25 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as the Wizards rallied to beat Brooklyn 118-113.

Liverpool and United thwarted in dramatic late sucker punches

By - Dec 05,2016 - Last updated at Dec 05,2016

LONDON — Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Manchester United were caught by late sucker punches in two games that finished far more dramatically than they began on Sunday.

Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool wasted a chance to return to second place in the table, a point behind Chelsea, twice surrendering a two-goal lead before losing 4-3 in added time in a thriller at Bournemouth.

United dropped two points at Everton after Marouane Fellaini conceded an 89th-minute penalty soon after the former Goodison Park favourite had come on as a substitute.

Third-placed Liverpool’s defeat was their first in any competition since August and looked highly improbable when they built on a slow start to cruise into a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Sadio Mane and Divock Origi, starting his first league game of the season, scored for the visitors from successive attacks.

Although Bournemouth had strong claims for a penalty turned down as Roberto Firmino challenged Nathan Ake, they did not threaten until the introduction of Scotland Under-21 international Ryan Fraser 10 minutes after half-time.

He had been on for barely a minute when he won a penalty that Callum Wilson converted.

Emre Can restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion but they were stunned when, in the space of three minutes, Fraser drove in Wilson’s centre and then defender Steve Cook brought down Fraser’s cross like a striker before driving home the equaliser.

In the third minute of added time Bournemouth secured one of the best wins in their history — and first against Liverpool — as goalkeeper Loris Karius fumbled a shot from long range and Ake poked the ball in.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said it was “a very special day” for his 10th-placed team.

“It would have been easy for our players to give up and see out time but our group knows not to give up,” he added.

Rocks and stones

Klopp said his side gave the points away although he was surprisingly sanguine about the outcome.

“Of course this can help us,” the Liverpool manager explained. “If we learn, then it’s OK.

“No road is without rocks and stones. It’s three points, no more, these things happen. The base is pretty good but we need to use our quality more.”

United Manager Jose Mourinho also tried to dwell on the positives after he had sent on Fellaini against eighth-placed Everton.

The Belgian produced a clumsy tackle on Idrissa Gueye and could only watch as defender Leighton Baines beat the previously defiant David De Gea from the penalty spot.

Earlier, Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his run of goals for sixth-placed United with a clever lob via the bar and post as goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg unwisely rushed out of the penalty area.

“We are not getting what we deserve,” said Mourinho. “In every one of our draws we deserved to win.

“You have [other] teams playing defensive and counterattacking football but getting results.

“I’m happy my team is playing extremely well. But this season what matters is the results.”

With six draws in the last eight league games and only one victory, results are not going United’s way, leaving them nine points behind Manchester City who are in fourth spot.

Tetchy Mourinho

Not for the first time this season, Jose Mourinho was left in a wretched mood after watching his Manchester United side control a Premier League match only to end up missing out on victory on Sunday.

In a tetchy news conference following the 1-1 draw at Everton that left his team in sixth place, the Portuguese was adamant they deserved to win and said there was “nothing more” he could do to change United’s fortunes.

Rather than address why the visitors were continually failing to kill off opponents they had dominated, a stern-looking Mourinho launched a counter attack.

Also, having been in so much trouble of late with football’s authorities, he gave a non-committal response when asked about a Marouane Fellaini foul on Idrissa Gueye that gifted Everton an 89th-minute penalty converted by Leighton Baines.

“I didn’t see it,” Mourinho said while many observers felt the penalty award was soft.

Then asked why he brought on the beanpole Fellaini as a substitute with United leading 1-0, he snapped at his questioner: “I thought you would know more about football than you do — because the answer is obvious.

“When a direct team is losing they intensify their direct football and when you have a two-metres [tall] player on the bench you play him in front of the defensive line to help the team win.”

United have drawn six of their last eight league fixtures and quizzed about another match without a win, Mourinho interrupted: “It’s another game with a very good performance. We are not getting the results we deserve.

“When you play well there’s nothing more you can do.”

So many of Mourinho’s teams in the past have been damned with faint praise for winning without flair.

What seems to be irritating him now is that he feels United are being criticised for playing attractively without getting the results.

“You [reporters] have to make a decision,” Mourinho said. “Because when my teams are playing pragmatic football and winning matches and titles, you say that is not right and nice.

“When my teams, like now, play very, very well, you say that what matters is to get results no matter what.

“At this moment in the Premier League you have teams getting results that defend with 11 players and attack the space on the counterattack [and you say] it’s phenomenal, beautiful. So you have to make a decision,” added Mourinho.
