LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points in 26 minutes of play and Manu Ginobili added a season-high 17 points off the bench as the San Antonio Spurs manhandled the New Orleans Pelicans 113-100 on Sunday at the AT&T Centre, winning their fourth straight game.

Kawhi Leonard added 13 points for San Antonio (22-5) while Tony Parker and Jonathan Simmons had 12 points and Patty Mills scored 11 points for the Spurs, who have won 8 of 19. Pau Gasol pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds in 24 minutes of play.

After the game, the Spurs retired the No. 21 jersey of former power forward Tim Duncan in a typically understated ceremony.

Duncan’s 19-year career, all with San Antonio, featured five championships and a 1,072-438 regular-season record. The Spurs’ .710 winning percentage during Duncan’s tenure was the best 19-year stretch in NBA history and was the best in all of the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB over that time.

Alexis Ajinca led the Pelicans (9-20) with 16 points while Buddy Hield added 14. Anthony Davis and Langston Galloway scored 12 points each and Tim Frazier had 11 for New Orleans.

The Spurs outrebounded New Orleans 49-37 and went to the free throw line 22 times (making 18) while the Pelicans were just 8 of 14 from the charity stripe.

Five points from Ginobili and a 3-pointer from Patty Mills in a 90-second span of the first quarter allowed the Spurs to turn a 19-18 deficit into a 26-19 lead at the 2:58 mark. New Orleans responded with a spurt of its own, tying the game at 26 before a Gasol jumper and a Leonard lay-up handed San Antonio a 30-26 advantage after 12 minutes.

The Pelicans owned a 44-42 lead at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter after a driving lay-up by Hield, until San Antonio forged a 9-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Danny Green, to sweep past New Orleans and assume a 51-42 advantage. The Spurs led 61-49 at the half.

Aldridge led all scorers with 16 points in the first half while Ginobili hit for 12 and Leonard added 11. Gasol had 12 rebounds in 18 minutes of play before half-time as the Spurs owned a 29-18 edge on the boards.

Davis and Ajinca led the Pelicans with 10 points each at intermission, but Davis picked up his third foul with 1:07 to play in the second quarter.

New Orleans got back to within 72-62 on a Hield jumper at the 6:39 mark of the third quarter, but then the Spurs kicked things into another gear again, reeling off an 11-2 run that was highlighted by another Ginobili 3-pointer.

Three free throws by Mills with 14.4 seconds to play in the quarter pushed the San Antonio lead to 21 points, 92-71, and allowed the Spurs to play mostly their reserves for the final quarter.

Jazira flying high as Ramtha loom

By - Dec 19,2016 - Last updated at Dec 19,2016

AMMAN — The Jordan Cup Round 2 kicked off Monday with tough matches after Round 1 ended with Ramtha and Jazira heading the tables of the two groups.

Ahli drew 1-1 with Baqa'a, Jazira outclassed That Ras 2-0, while Wihdat overpowered Shabab Urdun 2-0 on Monday.

The upcoming round will see Ramtha take on Faisali, Manshieh take on Sahab and Hussein face Sarih on Tuesday. With Monday’s win Jazira is still atop Group B after the past week's results which saw Jazira upset Wihdat 3-1, That Ras scoring a 2-0 win over Sarih, Shabab Urdun beat  Hussein 2-1.

In Group A, leader Ramtha beat Sahab 4-0, Faisali upset Ahli 2-1 and Manshieh beat Baqa'a 3-2.

The top two teams from each group will move on to the semis, which will be played over two rounds with no Division 1 teams playing this year.

So far in the current season, Jazira leads the Jordan Professional Football League standings 6 points ahead of Wihdat and Faisali. Ahli won the first major competition on the 2016/17 football calendar, when they beat reigning league champs Wihdat 2-1 to win the 34th Super Cup. In the Jordan Football Association Shield — back on the calendar after four years — Shabab Urdun scored a major 5-1 win over Faisali. It was Shabab Urdun's second Shield title after they first won in 2007.

Last season, Wihdat retained the league title for their third consecutive and 15th league title since they moved up to the Professional League in 1975. Faisali beat Wihdat to clinch the Super Cup while it was Ahli who made history when they beat Shabab Urdun to win their first Jordan Cup final.

It was momentous for Ahli fans and officials as the title came after years in the backstage.  Although the club is a long-time veteran and founder of the game in the Kingdom, Ahli were relegated to Division 1 in 2004 for the first time in their history. However, they have been back in the headlines after making it back to the Pro League in 2014, finishing fifth in 2015 and third last year.

Joe Smith Jr. stops 51-year-old Bernard Hopkins in 8th round

INGLEWOOD, California — Joe Smith Jr. stopped Bernard Hopkins 53 seconds into the eighth round of their WBC International Light Heavyweight title fight Saturday night.

Smith used a six-punch combination to send Hopkins through the ropes and on to the floor, effectively ending the 51-year-old’s 28-year boxing career.

Smith successfully defended his title when Hopkins was unable to return to the ring after 20 seconds. Hopkins hit his head on the way down and twisted his right ankle — he cited the ankle as the reason he could not finish. A WBC official said the injuries incurred forced a TKO.

“I knew he was a true champion, and if he did not get injured he’d be back here,” Smith said. “I came here to do my job. This is my coming out party, too. I had to finish him. It was either my career was going to end and his was going to end, but I needed mine to continue.”

Hopkins was reluctant to accept the outcome, initially claiming that he was shoved out of the ring.

“I was throwing the right hand and a combination and then using the rope as an offensive as I’m known for, and making a mess,” Hopkins said. “He got frustrated, and I might have gotten glased with a left hook and next thing I know he was throwing me out of the ring.

“The reason I said I’m upset they are giving Smith the TKO is because the momentum threw the ropes,” he added. “I didn’t dive through the ropes.”

Hopkins (56-8-2) was looking to wrap his career with one last showing of defensive-minded boxing in front of an enthusiastic, star-studded crowd at the Forum. Instead, he finished in the same manor he started, with a loss.

“This is my last fight, I promised it would be and you come to that point in life where it is final and I’m happy with my retirement,” Hopkins said. “I know the fans will know I went out as a soldier, fighting the toughest, baddest opponents. I’m not saying I agree, I’m not in denial — Joe was a tough, heavy hitting fighter.”

Wearing his old Executioner shorts as a throwback to his earlier fighting days, Hopkins looked his age early as Smith (23-1, 19 KOs) was the aggressor to start. Hopkins regained some footing in the fifth and sixth rounds but Smith gained momentum and took it with him through the eighth, when he pummelled Hopkins in a corner and sent him through the ropes.

“I had seen him fall, and I kept hitting him until I saw him go out, and I landed that left hook until he went out,” Smith said. “I knew he had time to go out, but I hit him with four or five clean shots and they were good shots on the button.”

In his prime, Hopkins won a record 20 consecutive middleweight title fights. He became the oldest-ever champion when he defended his light-heavyweight belt at 49. However, Hopkins had not fought in more than two years, losing to Sergey Kovalev on November 8, 2014, in his last bout.

Oleksandr Usyk (11-0), a 2016 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist out of Ukraine, successfully defended his WBO cruiserweight title with a knockout of Thabiso Mchunu (17-3) with a knockout in the ninth round, his 10th.

Local El Monte product Joseph Diaz (23-0), wearing Lakers colours in their former home, defended his NABF featherweight title, beating Horacio Garcia (30-2-1) of Mexico in the NABF featherweight title by unanimous decision.

Ahli, Wihdat look for regional titles

By - Dec 17,2016 - Last updated at Dec 17,2016

AMMAN — Two Jordanian football teams are readying for the start of the 2017 regional agenda alongside aspirations for the professional league title, currently under way.

As league champs, Wihdat will play the 2017 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Champions League — the premier Asian competition. But they will have to go through two preliminary round matches starting January 31, 2017, against India's Bengaluru FC and UAE's Wihda to move to Round 1.

Wihdat were Jordan's representative in the 2016 ACL edition and were knocked out in the preliminary round by Saudi Arabia's Ittihad Jeddah. In 2015, they lost to former titleholders Kuwait's Qadissieh. In 2014, Shabab Urdun were eliminated by Bahrain's Al Hidd.

If Wihdat advance past the ACL preliminary round, Jazira will join Jordan's reigning Jordan Cup champs Ahli in the AFC Cup, the second-tier Asian club competition. On the other hand, should Wihdat be again eliminated from the ACL early round, they will move to play in the AFC Cup alongside Ahli who will be playing the event for the first time.

Ahli were drawn to play in Group C alongside Iraq's Zawra, Syria's Jeish and a qualifier from Oman or Palestine starting February 20, 2017.

The local season opened with Ahli making history when they beat reigning league champs Wihdat 2-1 to win the 34th Super Cup — the first major competition on the 2016/17 football calendar. Although they are a founding member of the game in Jordan, they had never won the Super Cup.

They were relegated to Division 1 in 2004 for the first time in their history and were back among the Pro League clubs in 2014, finished 5th in 2014/15 and third in 2015/16 in the Premier League when they were also the best overall team and won the Jordan Cup after years in the backstage.

On the other hand, for the past three seasons, Wihdat  have won the league title for the 15th overall time since they moved up to the Professional League in 1975.

The AFC Cup will have clubs from across the continent competing in 8 groups from the 5 Asian Zones with the top two from each group going on to the Round of 16.

In 2016, Jordanian clubs were absent from advanced stages of Asian competitions as Wihdat and Faisali  were knocked out of the AFC  Cup Round  of 16.

In 2015, Wihdat and Jazira were also out in Round of 16 with Jazira, who finished runner-up in the Jordan League,  participating in the event after two-time AFC Cup champs and Faisali declined.

In 2014, Jordan Cup champs That Ras exited the Round of 16 in their inaugural AFC participation while former AFC Cup champs Shabab Urdun exited in Round 1.

The second-tier Asian club competition was won by Syria's Jeish in its inaugural edition in 2004. The event was won three times by Jordanian teams: Faisali won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 and Shabab Urdun in 2007.

Harden’s record triple-double powers Rockets over Kings

LOS ANGELES — James Harden matched the franchise record for career triple-doubles to lead the Houston Rockets to a dominating 132-98 victory over the shorthanded Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.

Harden finished with 15 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds to post his 14th career triple-double and equal the mark set by NBA Hall of Fame centre Hakeem Olajuwon.

Harden needed only 30 minutes to deliver his fifth triple-double on the season in front of a crowd of 15,000 at the Rockets’ Toyota Centre arena.

And the Rockets produced a season-high 40 assists on 50 field goals, their most since February 1995.

“Everybody is getting shots, everybody is scoring the basketball. Everybody is happy,” Harden said.

The Rockets improved to 19-7 on the season and won their eighth consecutive game.

Houston also flirted with the NBA record for three-pointers, hitting 22 of 42 from behind the arc while cruising to the win.

The Rockets extended their league record for consecutive games with at least 10 three-pointers at the 7:13 mark of the second quarter on a three from Sam Dekker.

Forward Ryan Anderson led all five Houston starters in double figures with 22 points. He was four for seven from three-point range while forward Trevor Ariza finished five-for-seven from beyond the arc.

Elsewhere in San Antonio, Texas, Kawhi Leonard scored 26 points as the San Antonio Spurs held on for a 108-101 win over the Boston Celtics.

Pau Gasol added 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Tony Parker had eight points in a two-and-a-half-minute stretch of the fourth quarter to help San Antonio withstand a Celtics comeback try.

Parker finished with 16 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter as San Antonio improved to 20-5 on the season.

Manu Ginobili added 12 points and Dewayne Dedmon and Patty Mills had 10 each.

In Salt Lake City, Rodney Hood scored 25 points and Gordon Hayward added 17 to lead the Utah Jazz to a 109-89 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Shelvin Mack added 15 points and five assists off the bench while Rudy Gobert notched his 16th double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Utah led from start to finish while shooting 58.3 per cent from the field and 13-of-23 from three-point range.

Russell Westbrook tallied 27 points, six rebounds and five assists for Oklahoma City.

Enes Kanter added 19 points off the bench for the Thunder, who lost for the third time in four games.

In Memphis, Marc Gasol posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to power the Memphis Grizzlies to an easy 93-85 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers who played without their three stars LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving.

The Cavaliers decided to give the three the night off and it showed as Cleveland never led in the game and trailed by 25 points in the fourth quarter.

Memphis got a game-high 20 points from guard Troy Daniels off the bench and he hit four of eight three-pointers.

Swingman Tony Allen finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals, an assist and a block. Guard Toney Douglas chipped in 14 points with six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Grizzlies.

Video evidence in football used for first time to award penalty

OSAKA — Video evidence was used to award a penalty for the first time in a FIFA competition at the Club World Cup on Wednesday when the referee gave Kashima Antlers a controversial spot kick in their 3-0 semifinal win over Colombia's Atletico Nacional.

An off-field official known as a video assistant referee (VAR) called attention to an infringement by Orlando Berrio and Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai walked to the side of the pitch to review the incident on a computer screen.

Kassai gave the 33rd minute penalty that Shoma Doi converted to give a 1-0 lead to Japanese side Kashima, who will play either Real Madrid or Mexico's Club America in Sunday's final.

Berrio could clearly be seen tripping opponent Daigo Nishi as the players moved into the box to challenge for a free kick.

However, the penalty decision provoked anger worldwide on twitter from fans who believe the video evidence also showed Nishi was in an offside position when the free kick was taken.

There was also concern that the referee was only permitted to watch the replay once the ball had gone out of play, which happened only after Atletico broke upfield on a counter attack.

FIFA later issued a statement clarifying its position on both issues and backing Kassai's performance.

"On the half-hour mark, after receiving information about a missed incident from Video Assistant Referee Danny Makkelie, referee Viktor Kassai made the TV signal to indicate that he would conduct an on-field review of footage via the pitch-side monitor," the statement said.

"Prior to that, the assistant referee had correctly applied the 'wait and see' technique with regard to the offside position of the player who was fouled."

"The offside offence never materialised because the player was unable to challenge the opponent for the ball, and the Hungarian referee subsequently pointed to the penalty mark, judging from the replay that Daigo Nishi had been tripped inside the penalty area by Atletico's Orlando Berrio."

Football's world governing body has called the technology a "big step forward" for the game but had also said it was entering "uncharted waters".

The trial during seven matches in Japan involves off-field VARs monitoring the action and calling the referee's attention to "clear mistakes in match-changing situations", such as goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and mistaken identity.

Its trial use at the Club World Cup — a tournament for the world's continental title holders plus the host nation's champions — follows the successful introduction of goal-line technology used to rule when a ball has crossed the goal line.

Leagues in 12 countries have confirmed they will participate in a two-year experiment with VARs.

Jazira maintain lead; Wihdat play Faisali Friday

By - Dec 14,2016 - Last updated at Dec 14,2016

AMMAN — Week 6 of the Jordan Professional Football League is scheduled to kick off Thursday with Jazira still in the lead and all-time rivals Wihdat and Faisali playing Friday.

It will be the 79th time Wihdat play Faisali with Wihdat having won 28 times, Faisali winning 27 times and 23 draws since 1976.

The past week saw Jazira score another convincing win 4-1 over Baqa'a to maintain a 4-point lead ahead of their upcoming match with 8th placed Sahab.

Wihdat jumped to second place after a vital 2-1 win over Ahli. Faisali also went up two spots to third after a 1-0 win over former champs Shabab Urdun.

Manshieh beat Sarih 1-0 to move up to fourth, and next play seventh placed Hussein.

Shabab Urdun are fifth and next play That Ras who were held 0-0 by Sahab while Ahli next play 9th placed Sarih. Hussein, who held Ramtha 0-0, play Manshieh, while Ramtha play Baqa'a, who dropped to last.

Jazira have so far scored three convincing wins over former champions Faisali, Wihdat and Shabab Urdun. Their striker Syrian Mardig Mardigian is league top scorer with four goals.

This season, Ahli won the first major competition on the 2016/17 football calendar. They made history when they beat reigning league champs Wihdat 2-1 to win the 34th Super Cup.  In the Jordan Football Association Shield — back on the calendar after four years — Shabab Urdun scored a major 5-1 win over Faisali. It was Shabab Urdun's second Shield title after they first won in 2007.

Last season, Wihdat retained the title with Faisali, Ahli, Jazira and Shabab Urdun in top five spots. It was Wihdat's third consecutive and 15th league title since they moved up to the Professional League in 1975. Faisali beat Wihdat to clinch the Super Cup while it was Ahli, who after years in the backstage, beat Shabab Urdun to win their first Jordan Cup final.

Magnificent Kohli follows in Tendulkar’s footsteps

By - Dec 13,2016 - Last updated at Dec 13,2016

India’s captain Virat Kohli celebrates after the dismissal of England’s Chris Woakes on the fifth day of the fourth Test cricket match against England in Mumbai on Monday (AFP photo by Indranil Mukherjee)

MUMBAI — India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara could have been forgiven for feeling more than a little aggrieved when his dismissal drew hearty cheers from his home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Apparently unconcerned that India had lost an important wicket from the second ball of the third day of the fourth Test against England, the crowd roared as Pujara trudged back to the dressing room.

Then, as a chant of “Koh-liiii! Kohli!” reverberated around the stadium and out across the Arabian Sea, India’s darling walked to the middle to take his guard.

Not since Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013 has an Indian cricketer commanded the adulation that Virat Kohli is currently enjoying, and few would argue that he is not deserving of it.

The atmosphere at the Wankhede was reminiscent of the era when Tendulkar, a Mumbai native, used to walk out to bat at the same number four position.

Kohli, as perhaps he must, dismisses comparison with the batting great but it is clear that they have a similar appetite for runs.

During his career-high 235 in Mumbai, his third double century of the year, the Delhi batsman became the first Indian since Rahul Dravid in 2011 to accumulate more than 1,000 test runs in a year.

His rich vein of form has not been restricted to the longest form of the game, however, and he is first batsman to average over 50 in all three formats as well as being the highest international run-scorer of 2016.

Kohli’s single-minded drive for excellence also echoes Tendulkar, who assiduously refined his craft to accumulate over 34,000 runs and 100 centuries in a 24-year career.

Like Tendulkar, Kohli has a near-flawless technique which helps him tackle pace and spin with equal ease and India look to him every time they hit choppy waters, as they did for two decades with the “Little Master”.

And, like Tendulkar, Kohli is rapidly becoming a darling of corporations keen to associate their brands with a player whose expressive nature has touched a nerve with India’s youth.

England setback

All was not quite as rosy couple of years back, however.

Kohli had made his ODI debut as a 19-year-old and played his first Test three years later, starting on a path that would lead to 15 test hundreds and 26 centuries in the 50-over format.

Of his 13 Test centuries before the start of the ongoing series, however, only one had come against England, at Nagpur in 2012.

And in the five-Test series in England in 2014, Kohli hit a trough, managing only 134 runs at an average of 13.4 with a high score of 39.

“It made me realise what I need to improve in my game so I am pretty thankful to England for that,” Kohli recalled at the start of the current series against the English.

“I have been a really improved cricketer from then on.”

After his return from England, Kohli went knocking on Tendulkar’s door.

“The best advice was not to read and look up things that are written about me,” Kohli told reporters after India took an unassailable 3-0 lead over England on Monday.

“I am not joking or being sarcastic, and that was the best advice I have got.”

The rewards have come since in a torrent of runs, no more so than over the last four tests where he has scored 640 of them at an average of 128.

Captaincy

One point of difference with Tendulkar is Kohli’s success as a captain, a responsibility which hung heavily on the shoulders of the game’s most prolific run scorer but has brought out the best in the younger batsman.

Before replacing Mahendra Singh Dhoni as Test captain at the end of 2014, Kohli averaged just a shade above 41 but since then the number has shot up to 65.5.

Five consecutive Test series victories for India and a firm grip on the number one Test ranking under his leadership have intensified his popularity.

For Kohli, however, burying the ghosts of 2014 in a first series win over England in four attempts was clearly something special.

“This series win is probably the sweetest of all we’ve won in the past 14-15 months,” Kohli said.

‘Financial, technical and administrative challenges hindering progress of local basketball’

Fans, current, former players diagnose national sports’ waning popularity

By - Dec 12,2016 - Last updated at Dec 13,2016

AMMAN — Jordanian basketball has lost its lustre over the past years due to financial, technical and administrative challenges, team players, coaches, federation members and fans have agreed.

Wael Zubeidi, who has been attending basketball matches for around 20 years, said the audience these days is not “as excited” to watch basketball matches due to the decline in performance and the overwhelming popularity of football as a national game.

“I find the future of basketball in Jordan somewhat gloomy; it’s not like it used to be, and we don’t see the same level of competence among our team players, which is truly disappointing,” he told The Jordan Times recently.

Zaina Salaytah, a younger fan, blamed the media for not giving enough coverage to basketball tournaments throughout the year.

“All we see is advertisements and TV shows on football… Many people prefer watching basketball, but do not have access to the latest news since media outlets do not cover it enough,” Salaytah added.

Changes in the national team

Former coach and basketball player Murad Barakat said Jordanian basketball has been going through some changes, which contributed to the current slump.

He said the return of expatriates and the recruitment of foreigners who were granted nationality helped “boost the performance” of the national team to a certain degree in the last decade.

“This change had a positive impact on the technical level, but it failed to generate lasting audience interest. With time passing, the game had lost its audience and popularity among Jordanians,” Barakat, who has coached the national team and the Orthodox club, told The Jordan Times.

Sam Daghlas, the national team’s current head coach, said the main issue is the lack of financial support and miscommunication between the management and the team members.

“As the head coach, I saw players come with a lower level of skills due to participating in a weak tournament and for not practising regularly, since the clubs are not committed for several reasons, including not receiving sufficient funding,” he said.

Daghlas added: “Another reason is the payment. When players are not paid enough, it makes it harder for them to commit and they tend to find other jobs, but I always say if a sport wasn’t given a player’s full time, it would never work.”

From the Jordan Basketball Federation, Executive Manager Ghaleb Balawi blamed the lack of funding and courts to practise for the sport’s decline.

“There are only two main venues for basketball matches in Jordan — the Prince Hamzah Hall in Amman and the other one is in Irbid,” he told The Jordan Times.

Daghlas said a sport without funding and professional clubs “does not work”, citing as another challenge the federation’s failure “to adapt to the new ways used in other countries”.

Player Zaid Abbas, who is playing in the Chinese Jiangsu Tong Xi basketball club for the 2016-2017 season, said the issues facing Jordanian basketball are due to not having clubs and basketball centres that provide players with a sufficient income.

“Many basketball players in Jordan work two jobs. The money that they get from this sport is no longer sufficient, and working another job makes them lose focus,” Abbas explained.

Balawi said Jordanian basketball is witnessing fewer crowds than those of the 1970s and the 1980s due to the rapid spread of technology and the fact that people can view matches online.

Daghlas agreed that this could be a factor, saying that many people rely on technology to stay updated on match results instead of going to the court and cheering for their favourite teams.

But the lack of marketing campaigns to promote the team and the sport has also contributed to the game’s waning popularity, he argued.

‘U16 and U18 teams unprepared’

Schools should prepare at least 20 to 50 basketball players to qualify for the try-outs of the national team; however, no more than 10 young players from schools every year have the skills for it, Daghlas said.

The responsibility of “bringing Jordanian basketball back on track” depends on schools and the local clubs around Jordan, according to the federation.

“Schools are holding basketball tournaments for a day or two every year — this is not enough for young players to develop their skills and evaluate them,” Balawi said.

When Daghlas joined the national team in 2005, many players joined the team as well, which contributed to “boosting” their skills, he said, adding that the period between 2006 and 2011 was the “golden age” of Jordanian basketball.

“The team started changing, since we imported players from other countries; the proficiency of the players increased. Afterwards, the federation set a plan to ensure the team qualifies to the Olympics or the [FIBA World Cup],” he said.

Barakat said that after the national team successfully qualified to the FIBA World Cup in 2010, “we entered a phase of a steady decline”. He charged that the basketball federation “is unable to find solutions” for the status of the sport in the country.

“Under international rules and regulations, the basketball federation should hold at least two meetings a month with players and coaches,” he continued. For six straight months earlier this year, “they didn’t hold any meetings”.

Abbas, who joined the national team in 2004, agreed that the proficiency level of basketball witnessed a decline after 2011.

“Since then, the team has changed, with younger players joining who don’t have the same experience as the older generation,” he added.

“As long as the media, companies and [the concerned authorities] do not take action to bring Jordanian basketball back on track, we will witness more decline in performance and attendance,” Abbas warned.

Asia Challenge Cup

Despite the technical and financial difficulties facing the sport, the national team achieved good results in the Asia Challenge Cup, earning the bronze medal after winning six matches and losing two — one to China and another to title winners Iran.

Daghlas said the effort exerted by the national team in the Asia Challenge Cup in September was “a huge accomplishment” for the team, and it “proved to Asia that the Jordanian team is progressing” and “getting its team back”.

However, despite all the success, when the team players returned to Jordan, according to the coach, “there was no change in the basketball community”.

“Players are still misused; there is no improvement, no change. It hurts, because you come back to Jordan and have to deal with these problems,” he told The Jordan Times.

“One thing… that I’ve noticed is that players are doing everything they can despite the limited resources… But the managements are not doing everything they can; their efforts do not exceed 40 per cent,” Daghlas charged.

The challenge, for the coach, he said, is to be the “middleman” between the team members and the federation, because he believes players are being “misrepresented, misused and misunderstood”.

Daghlas said the past three years were the worst for local basketball.

“I knew it was better for me to retire as a player and try to save the sport and help the players.”

The coach said he seeks to help the team qualify to the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup, in addition to building a new generation.

Daghlas added that the federation’s president, Samer Asfour, “was able to see his vision to change the basketball team”; however, he urged the remaining federation members to “trust his proposal” for the World Cup to “ensure moving forward”.

The 2016 Jordanian basketball season is “one of the worst”, he said, explaining that it was “short”, with only 14 games and that it was missing many national team members such as Musa Awadi and Mahmoud Abdeen.

“Clubs are not doing their job. The federation has to back the national team and to trust the coach’s vision to bring basketball back on track in Jordan.”

Daghlas urged audiences to “care about the sport like it’s your own”, as part of the process to revive local basketball.

“The more fans we get coming out, the louder the voice will be for basketball,” he said.

“Care about Jordan. When you like a sport, go support it — whether it was a good game or a weak one. Don’t look at who they’re playing against, go support them anyway, make a change.”

CLEVELAND — LeBron James scored 17 of his season-high 44 points in the fourth quarter and reached another career milestone as the Cleveland Cavaliers won their fourth straight, 116-105 over the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA on Saturday.

James did it all, adding 10 assists and nine rebounds in 43 minutes. He took over in the fourth, scoring 13 straight during one stretch to help the Cavs hold on.

James, who moved into ninth place on the career scoring list Friday, recorded his 7,000th assist in the first half, becoming the first frontcourt player in NBA history to reach the plateau. James is the only player with 27,000 points and 7,000 assists.

Cleveland shot a season-best 58 per cent from the field and beat Charlotte for the sixth straight time at home.

Grizzlies 110, Warriors 89

The Grizzlies led by as many as 30 points in the second half — the biggest advantage for any Warriors opponent this season. Seven Memphis players finished in double figures.

Kevin Durant led Golden State with 21 points, and Stephen Curry added 17. Curry and backcourt mate Klay Thompson (eight points) were a combined 8 of 28 from the field, including 3 of 14 outside the arc.

Chris Paul had 20 points and a season-high 20 assists, and Los Angeles beat New Orleans with its highest offensive output of the season.

It was the first 20-20 game of Paul’s career, and he became the first player since at least 1977-78 — when turnovers were first recorded for individual players — to have 20 points, 20 assists and no turnovers, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Clippers shot a season-best 57.4 per cent and made a season-high 17 3-pointers on 36 attempts to end a two-game skid.

Jamal Crawford scored 22 points and DeAndre Jordan had 19 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which won for the third time in eight games after opening 14-2.

Five other San Antonio players scored in double figures, led by 16 points from Patty Mills.

The Spurs set season highs for points, points in a quarter, points in a half, assists and 3-pointers in winning their 14th straight at home over the Nets. San Antonio also matched its largest margin of victory, set in a season-opening win over Golden State.

The Spurs led by as many as 38 three days after what coach Gregg Popovich deemed a poor effort in a 95-91 defeat at Chicago.

Jazz 104, Kings 84

Rudy Gobert had 17 points, 14 rebounds and a season-high six blocks, helping Utah overcome a flood of turnovers to beat Sacramento.
