Ice Prince and Frog Princess: Five to watch at Beijing 2022

By - Oct 27,2021 - Last updated at Oct 27,2021

BEIJING — The biggest names in winter sports will descend on the Chinese capital in February for the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

At the 100-day countdown to the Games, AFP Sport picks out five stars who look set to light up the Olympics.

Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN)

Hanyu is still only 26, but the “Ice Prince” is already going after a hat-trick of Olympic figure-skating gold medals. He is always followed by screaming fans who shower the ice with Winnie the Poohs after his routines.  Although the Beijing Games will be restricted to local spectators, Chinese authorities have vowed to ensure Hanyu still gets plenty of support — the official intervention underlining just how big a star he is.

Eileen Gu (CHN)

Born in California and representing the United States before switching to China, Gu looks destined to be one of the faces of the Games. Just 18, the freeskier is also a model and grade-A student. Known as “Gu Ailing” in China, her father is American and mother Chinese. She has been enthusiastically embraced in China, with the country’s media affectionately dubbing her “Frog Princess” after a green helmet she wore.

Mikaela Shiffrin (USA)

The American skiing star is pursuing a third consecutive gold in slalom, but has admitted having some trepidation ahead of Beijing. The 26-year-old won the overall World Cup title for three straight years to 2019, but that streak ended with a horrible season marked by the sudden death of her father in February 2020, the coronavirus pandemic and a back injury, as she went winless for the first time since her debut campaign in 2011-2012.

Chloe Kim (USA)

Born in the United States to Korean parents, she became one of the faces of the Pyeongchang 2018 Games when aged just 17. The snowboarder swept to halfpipe gold in South Korea, roared on by locals who adopted her as their own and chanted her name.

Connor McDavid (CAN)

NHL players return to the Olympics and Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid will be one to watch. At 24 he is one of the youngest players for team Canada but still one of the best. There is a good chance that the two-time NHL MVP could be paired on a line with Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon — their speed and explosiveness looks like being one of the most lethal scoring combinations in men’s hockey in Beijing.

... and one who won’t be there

Pita Taufatofua (TGA)

The Tongan raised pulses when he peeled off for the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics, then appeared shirtless again as temperatures plunged in Pyeongchang, and pulled off the same stunt in Tokyo. But after competing in freestyle cross country last time at the Winter Games — coming 114th but avoiding the wooden spoon — he is not expected to appear in Beijing.

Bucks close out road swing with win over Pacers, Nets rout Wizards

LOS ANGELES — Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, and the Milwaukee Bucks led by as much as 18 points en route to a 119-109 win over the mistake-prone Indiana Pacers.

Khris Middleton had 27 points for the Bucks, who went on an 11-2 run at the end of the second quarter and took advantage of 19 turnovers by the Pacers in front of a crowd of 17,900 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse Arena on Monday.

The win wrapped up a three-game road trip for the reigning NBA champion Bucks.

“It was really aggressive Giannis tonight,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “At the same time, he [was] making reads, making great passes. When he’s attacking like that, that’s when we are at our best. He had that extra gear tonight.”

Malcolm Brogdon led the Pacers with 25 points, and forward Domantas Sabonis scored 21 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to post a double double for the third time in four games.

Indiana rookie Chris Duarte continued his strong start, finishing with 18 points. He has scored at least 15 in each of his first four NBA games.

Indiana tried to rally in the fourth quarter with an 11-1 scoring burst that cut the Bucks’ lead to just five points. But that would be as close as they would get, as the Bucks would hold on for the win.

The game got testy in the fourth quarter when Bucks George Hill was slapped with a technical after getting tied up with Pacers Brogdon under Indiana’s basket. Pacers Goga Bitadze, of Georgia, was also given a technical on the play.

Brooklyn overpowers Washington

Elsewhere, Kevin Durant scored 25 points, and the Brooklyn Nets overpowered the Washington Wizards with a 104-90 victory in New York.

Durant shot nine of 17 from the field in 35 minutes of playing time on Monday. He added eight rebounds and four assists.

Patty Mills came off the bench to drain five three-pointers and finished with 21 points.

Brooklyn’s Bruce Brown contributed 14 points, and James Harden chipped in 14, nine assists and six rebounds as the Nets shot 42.6 per cent from the field.

Bradley Beal returned from a one-game absence due to a hip contusion and led the Wizards with 19 points.

Daniel Gafford added 13 points, while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Aaron Holiday had 11 apiece.

Also, DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points against his former team, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as the Chicago Bulls held on to beat the Toronto Raptors 111-108.

Danish start for ‘complete’ 2022 Tour de France

By - Oct 26,2021 - Last updated at Oct 26,2021

PARIS — The 2022 Tour de France embarks from Denmark, pushes into Switzerland and Belgium, visits Dunkirk and Lourdes, and features five mountain slogs.

While the opening three days in Denmark had already been publicised, the rest of the route was unveiled in a ceremony before an audience of several thousand at a Paris conference centre.

Cycling fans can look forward to a pulsating penultimate day with a time trial over a 40km course.

Other highlights will be a stage on the cobbled roads of Roubaix on the border of France and Belgium, and massed ranks of spectators will be allowed on the classic climb of the Alpe d’Huez on the French national holiday of July 14, provided new coronavirus precautions are not introduced.

The 2022 route looks favourable to all-rounders who can master the time-trial, such as reigning two-time champion Tadej Pogacar and his compatriot, Olympic champion Primoz Roglic.

There are two time-trial stages over more than 50km, although riders will also be put to the test over five massive mountain stages.

Pogacar, however, denied he would be favourite for a third yellow jersey.

“I’ve won two so I’m more confident but every year is different so it’s back to zero,” the UAE Emirates team rider said.

“There’s lots of tricky stages with either wind or cobbles or little climbs where you can make a mistake, and the Alps looks tough, I’d say the Alpe d’Huez would be the big one,” said the 22-year-old.

The race also takes in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes and the picturesque mediaeval city of Carcassonne in southwest France.

The race begins with a short 13km time trial around Copenhagen, passing by the bronze statue of the Little Mermaid.

But the key challenges in Denmark will be runs along the fjords and the crossing of a 17km bridge over the sea between two islands.

The 2021 runner-up Jonas Vingegaard is Danish and there will be several Danes at the start in 2022.

“I think Jasper Stuyven is our best chance of taking yellow in Denmark,” said veteran Jakob Fuglsang, veteran of 10 Tour de France races.

Only a complete rider can win

While the route avoids the entirety of France’s western coast, it is at least balanced on a sporting level.

“It’s a race with a bit of everything,” course designer Thierry Gouvenou told AFP. “The word that best captures how to describe the 2022 route is that it’s complete.

“You’ll need to be at ease with wind too, because of this bridge over the sea in Denmark and also on the stage to Dunkirk,” he said of the final Danish run and the first French one on stage four.

“The cobblestones might also have their say on how things go in the race for the [winner’s] yellow jersey. There are 19 kilometres of them, that’s complicated for a lot of people,” he added.

“But anyone who wins will need to be a complete rider because there are five finishes at high altitude and one of them is at 2400 metres.

“You have the entire palate of what it is possible to provide on a Tour de France.”

The winner will pull on the yellow jersey on the Champs-Elysees after eight laps of the French capital on the final day.

Mediocrity setting in at Barca as Clasico leaves them adrift in La Liga

By - Oct 26,2021 - Last updated at Oct 26,2021

MADRID — The biggest worry perhaps for Barcelona on Sunday at the end of another Clasico defeat at Camp Nou was that Real Madrid hardly even celebrated.

This was a victory that sent Madrid five points clear of their opponents, a healthy gap even at this early stage of a La Liga season that has 29 games to go.

It was Madrid’s fourth consecutive Clasico victory, the first time that has happened in 56 years, and it left Barca sitting eighth at full-time, ninth by the end of the weekend.

There were things to admire in Barcelona’s performance. They had more of the ball, more shots and might have managed a draw if Sergino Dest had shown a cooler head in front of goal.

They could certainly not be faulted for effort or ambition, with a team that had four players aged 20 or younger, including Gavi, who at 17 was Barca’s youngest starter in this fixture for 80 years.

Barca fought hard and, within their own limitations, they played well.

“We continued to dominate the ball but it was difficult for us to create clear chances,” said Sergio Busquets.

Real Madrid though were the better team, not more dominant perhaps, but more threatening, more solid and more diligent in following a clearer plan.

They counter-attacked at speed and created more chances. If Sergio Aguero had not scored in the 97th minute, a 2-0 away win would have been a fair reflection.

Just as Atletico Madrid strolled to a 2-0 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano before the international break, for one of their most comfortable wins over Barcelona in years.

“We played a great team, we have suffered but we were able to cope,” said Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

A pattern has developed that when Barca face an elite opponent, they are found wanting.

Since Koeman took over, his team have played six games against Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid and have lost five and drawn one of them.

Against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s Champions League last 16, Barcelona lost 5-2 on aggregate.

This season, they have been thrashed 3-0 by both Bayern Munich and Benfica.

Since beating Real Sociedad on the opening day of the season, Barcelona’s four wins have come against Getafe, Levante, Valencia and Dynamo Kiev, all at home.

The concern is these results are an indicator of Barcelona’s level now, that key departures in the summer and mediocre replacements have led to a drop in quality that could leave them fighting to make La Liga’s top four, let alone challenge for the title.

As it stands, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad and Sevilla all look stronger than Barcelona.

The financial consequences of failing to qualify for the Champions League would be so enormous that Koeman is unlikely to survive the scenario becoming a realistic possibility.

It should not come to that.

Barcelona have Rayo Vallecano, Alaves, Celta Vigo and Espanyol next in La Liga, when victories should push them back among the frontrunners.

The return of Aguero, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri should make a considerable difference to the attack.

“The championship is very long, we have to keep improving,” said Koeman.

Yet Barca cannot be complacent.

Three opening defeats in the Champions League have left them playing catch-up and now in La Liga, they are three points behind fourth.

Five candidates to replace Solskjaer at Man United

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Manchester United’s historic 5-0 thrashing at the hands of fierce rivals Liverpool has left manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job despite signing a new three-year deal just three months ago.

Solskjaer has failed to win a trophy in nearly three years in charge at Old Trafford and tangible signs of progress after finishing second in the Premier League last season have been blown away amid a run of five defeats in their last nine games.

United are already eight points off the pace at the top of the table and there is a growing consensus that they need a coach to match the calibre of Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Chelsea’s Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel.

Solskjaer has led United to two consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager in 2013, but his time looks to be running out.

AFP Sport looks at five of the candidates to replace the 48-year-old if and when he is shown the door at Old Trafford.

Antonio Conte: A proven title winner, Conte turned a Chelsea side that had finished 10th the previous season into Premier League winners in his debut campaign in England in 2016/17.

The Italian is without a club having left Inter Milan in May after ending their 11-year wait to win Serie A.

Conte appears a perfect fit to solve United’s defensive woes that have blighted their season. Solskjaer’s men have kept one clean sheet in 21 games and shipped 11 goals in a week against Leicester, Atalanta and Liverpool.

However, Conte’s fiery temperament and tendency to fall out with his superiors could count against him.

“He’s not a fit for United,” said former United captain Gary Neville on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane: Expectations were high for United to challenge for major trophies this season after the signings of serial winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane, along with £73 million ($100 million) winger Jadon Sancho.

Three of Ronaldo and Varane’s Champions League titles came under Zidane at Real Madrid and the Frenchman is also a free agent having ended his second spell with the Spanish giants in May.

Zidane proved himself a master of moulding a star-studded squad into a team at Madrid, where he also won two La Liga titles.

That is exactly what United need and his global profile fits the brand-building exercise the English giants have gone down in recent years, at times to the detriment of a well-functioning team on the field.

Brendan Rodgers: The outstanding option on the domestic market for United is Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman’s past as a Liverpool manager may rule him out for many United fans, but he has rebuilt his reputation since a rollercoaster three years at Anfield between 2012 and 2015.

Rodgers proved himself capable of handling the demands of winning every week in three years at Celtic, where he won a clean sweep of seven domestic trophies before returning to the Premier League with Leicester.

The Foxes have narrowly missed out on the Champions League for the past two seasons to Chelsea despite far inferior resources and beat the European champions to win the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history last season.

Erik Ten Hag: The Dutchman is responsible for arguably the form team in Europe right now with Ajax cruising towards the last 16 of the Champions League and another Eredivisie title after thrashing PSV Eindhoven 5-0 on Sunday.

Ten Haag was linked with a number of top jobs after leading the four-time European champions to the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time since 1997 two years ago.

But unlike many of his players from that run, he is yet to be poached by one of Europe’s top clubs.

The former Bayern Munich youth team coach would fit the attacking style demanded of a United manager, as exhibited by a 4-0 thrashing of Borussia Dortmund last week.

Luis Enrique: The Spain coach is another with plenty of experience in getting the best out of a collection of talented individuals.

He won the treble in his first season at Barcelona and added another La Liga title with a front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

Fluent in English, Luis Enrique has never hidden his desire to one day coach in the Premier League

His success with Spain this year at Euro 2020 and the Nations League finals shows he is also capable of producing an exciting side without the same quality of stars he had on offer at the Camp Nou.

Real Madrid beat struggling rivals Barcelona in Clasico

By - Oct 25,2021 - Last updated at Oct 25,2021

MADRID — Real Madrid piled renewed pressure on Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman as David Alaba scored a scintillating goal to help seal a 2-1 victory in the Clasico at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Alaba’s bending shot had Madrid in front for the majority of an end-to-end contest, with Lucas Vazquez making it two in injury-time before Sergio Aguero tapped in his first goal for Barcelona with seconds left.

Barca have now lost a fourth consecutive Clasico for the first time since 1965 and stay a lowly eighth in La Liga, five points behind Madrid, who surge back to the top of the table.

After beating Valencia and winning a crucial Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev this week, it is a fresh setback for Barca and Koeman, whose future will again come under scrutiny.

Madrid, meanwhile, see their own recovery bolstered, after backing up a thumping win over Shakhtar Donetsk to leave a rocky run in the rear-view mirror.

“These games are always close,” said Koeman. “They have their game, we have ours and the details decide the result. It’s a shame because we had the opportunities to score.”

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said: “We played against a great team, we have suffered, but we were able to cope.”

This was the first league meeting between these clubs without either Lionel Messi or Sergio Ramos since 2005 and while there were still veterans on show — Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema, Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets among them — it was a Clasico more about the future.

For the first time in 65 years, six players younger than 22 began the game while Gavi, Barcelona’s 17-year-old midfielder, was the youngest Barca starter in a Clasico in almost a century.

The promotion of a duel between Ansu Fati and Vinicius Junior perhaps felt a little forced, but both players have become symbols of hope.

Fati endured one of those games to be expected sometimes of an 18-year-old, with the occasional threat dotted across a quieter display than he would have liked.

Vinicius, though, was electric from the start, a constant thorn in Barcelona’s side, especially in the first half, and instrumental in Alaba’s superb, counterattacking opener.

Barcelona were the more purposeful early on, setting their stall out by dominating the ball but Madrid were happy to sit deep and posed the greater problems on the break.

Vincius beat Oscar Mingueza with a superb turn through his opponent’s legs and as Mingueza scuttled back to recover, Vinicius cut across him and tumbled in the box. The contact was there but minimal.

Not long after, Vinicius was in again and while replays showed he was just offside, Marc-Andre ter Stegen did brilliantly to take him wide and force a finish with defenders back to block.

In between, Barca were controlling the ball, their more patient approach yielding a golden opportunity for Sergino Dest, the American more accustomed to right back than right wing, who blazed over from six yards after Memphis Depay slid across.

Madrid made Barcelona pay in the 32nd minute with a wonderful goal. Alaba tackled Depay on the edge of his own box and kept going, at first wanting it down the line from Vinicius, who instead switched forward to Rodrygo.

This time Alaba would get it back and from the edge of the area he swerved the ball inside the far post.

Quartararo wins first MotoGP title after Bagnaia crashes out at Misano

By - Oct 25,2021 - Last updated at Oct 25,2021

MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy — Fabio Quartararo won his first MotoGP world title on Sunday after his closest rival Francesco Bagnaia crashed out of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

Bagnaia, who was 52 points behind Quartararo with three GPs including this race remaining, was comfortably leading when he fell with just four laps left to hand the Frenchman his country’s first ever MotoGP championship.

Yamaha rider Quartararo, 22, now leads Bagnaia by 65 points meaning he can no longer be caught by his Ducati rival and guarantees a first riders’ title for his team since 2015.  “I still can’t believe it,” a tearful Quartararo told Sky Sports Italia.

“It feels good to also have my family with me, we will enjoy a lot tonight and until the end of the season.” Quartararo’s win comes in his third season in MotoGP, the first with Yamaha’s factory team after two years with the SRT satellite outfit. Of the 16 MotoGPs he has contested this season, he has claimed 10 podiums, including five victories.

Quartararo surged from 15th on the starting grid to finish fourth on Sunday behind race winner Marc Marquez, who had been pursuing Bagnaia for almost the entire race. Marquez’s Honda teammate Pol Espargaro was second and Italian rider Enea Bastianini of Ducati came third. “Today is not my day but Fabio’s,” said Marquez. “I want to congratulate him. He deserves it as he has done an incredible job this season.

” Sunday’s race was also Valentino Rossi’s last MotoGP in Italy ahead of retirement at the end of the season, and he placed a creditable 10th on his final bow at his home rack of Misano.

Salah hits hat-trick to humiliate Man United

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Liverpool inflicted a historic hammering on Manchester United as Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job.

For the first time in Premier League history, United trailed 4-0 at half-time and failed to score in a hopelessly one-sided contest. The Red Devils have now taken a run of one point from a possible 12 in the league.

Naby Keita started the rout before Diogo Jota doubled Liverpool’s lead inside 15 minutes.

Salah then took centre stage to take his tally for the season to 15 goals in 12 appearances and become the top-scoring African player in Premier League history in the process.

To round off a miserable day for United, Paul Pogba lasted less than 15 minutes as a second-half substitute as he was shown a straight red card for a reckless lunge that forced Keita to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

Liverpool’s first victory in front of a crowd at Old Trafford under Jurgen Klopp moves them back above Manchester City into second, just a point behind leaders Chelsea.

By contrast, United’s hopes of a first league title since 2013 already look over as they remain eight points off the leaders.

That gap is likely to grow in the coming weeks with Tottenham and City to come in the next fortnight before an international break.

Whether Solskjaer will still be in charge come November is now in serious doubt as he has completely failed to form a balanced team from a talented collection of star players.

The Norwegian will wonder what might have been had Bruno Fernandes not fired over a glorious chance to open the scoring on three minutes.

But soon the defensive cracks that have blighted United’s season began to appear.

Salah teed up Keita to open the floodgates after just five minutess with a composed low finish past David de Gea.

United came from 2-0 down at the break to beat Atalanta 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

But former midfielder Paul Scholes’ warning after that match that Liverpool would be 4-0 up in 45 minutes if handed the same space to attack into came to fruition.

Jota justified his selection ahead of Sadio Mane as he stretched to turn in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross to double Liverpool’s advantage.

Salah has now scored in 10 consecutive games and overtook Didier Drogba with his 105th Premier League goal when the Egyptian turned home Keita’s cut-back with the United defence all at sea.

Cristiano Ronaldo was lucky to avoid a red card as United’s frustrations bubbled over in first-half stoppage time when he was booked for lashing out at Curtis Jones in a sign of what was to come as the home side lost their discipline.

Liverpool inflicted further punishment before the break when Salah smashed home his 14th goal in 12 games this season at De Gea’s near post.

Salah then completed his hat-trick with another cool finish five minutes into the second-half after Jordan Henderson’s pass dissected the United defence once more.

Ronaldo thought he had pulled a goal back only for a VAR review to catch him in an offside position.

Another VAR check saw the end of Pogba’s brief cameo for a horrendous studs-up challenge on Keita that forced the Guinean off.

Solskjaer sacrificed Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to try and stop the bleeding as Old Trafford emptied during the final half hour.

De Gea ensured Liverpool failed to match their record margin of victory against United with an incredible save from Alexander-Arnold’s drive.

However, that did not subdue the mood among the travelling fans as they mockingly chanted for Solskjaer to remain in his job.

Lewandowski scores to keep Bayern top of Bundesliga

BERLIN — Robert Lewandowski stated his case for the Ballon d’Or by scoring his 10th Bundesliga goal in nine games this season for leaders Bayern Munich in a 4-0 romp at home to Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Having claimed a record 41 Bundesliga goals last season, Lewandowski has picked up where he left off.

The Poland striker is among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or on November 29 having been named FIFA’s best male player of 2020.

Lewandowski showed his class with a stunning strike after Serge Gnabry gave the hosts a first-half lead in front of 60,000 fans at the Allianz Arena, the biggest home crowd since the pandemic hit Germany in March 2020.

Replacements Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman grabbed late goals to seal the win which keeps Bayern a point clear at the top of the table ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who won 3-1 at Arminia Bielefeld.

Bayern dominated even though head coach Julian Nagelsmann is quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19.

“It was a deserved victory. The team played very strong football for 30 minutes,” said Nagelsmann’s assistant coach Dino Toppmoeller.

“After going 2-0 up, there was a lack of sharpness in defence. In the end, we stepped up a gear.”

“We’ll all be happy if Julian comes back as soon as possible.”

Gnabry’s opening goal came after he had already had one disallowed. Lewandowski had also chipped Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann only to watch the ball fly agonisingly wide of the post.

Bayern finally made their domination count on 16 minutes when Jamal Musiala played the ball in to Gnabry, who fired between Baumann’s legs for his sixth league goal this season.

Lewandowski made it 2-0 with a superb finish from the edge of the area.

The floodgates opened with eight minutes left as Choupo-Moting and then Coman fired home to complete the rout.

Dortmund respond to Ajax rout

Borussia Dortmund bounced back from their midweek Champions League drubbing at Ajax against Arminia Bielefeld.

Emre Can and Mats Hummels claimed first-half goals before England midfielder Jude Bellingham dribbled past defenders, then chipped the ball in from a tight angle.

“We wanted to give an answer here to the game on Tuesday, which was unfortunately, a step backwards,” admitted Hummels.

With regular penalty-taker Erling Braut Haaland sidelined with a hip injury, Can stepped up to convert an early spot-kick.

Hummels produced a spectacular volley from the edge of the area to make it 2-0 at half-time before Bellingham grabbed the third 18 minutes from time. Striker Fabian Klos converted a late Bielefeld penalty.

Freiburg remain the only unbeaten team in Germany’s top flight and rose to third with a 2-0 win at Wolfsburg, thanks to goals by Philipp Lienhart and Lucas Hoeler.

Wolfsburg won their first four league games under Mark van Bommel to lead the table in mid-September, but four straight defeats leave them eighth.

Second-half goals by Emil Forsberg, Yussuf Poulsen, Dominik Szoboszlai, who set up the fourth for 18-year-old Hugo Novoa Ramos on his league debut, saw RB Leipzig fight back to claim a 4-1 home win over bottom side Greuther Fuerth.

The win eases pressure on American head coach Jesse Marsch after Leipzig lost their first three Champions League games, including Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.

Later Hertha Berlin built on last weekend’s win at Eintracht Frankfurt with a 1-0 victory at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach thanks to Marco Richter’s first-half winner.

Jordan hosts U-23 Asian qualifiers

By - Oct 24,2021 - Last updated at Oct 24,2021

AMMAN — Jordan’s national U-23 team is upbeat as it kicks off Group F Asian U-23 qualifiers on Monday which qualifies the top team to the 5th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship in Uzbekistan in June 2022.

Jordan will play Turkmenistan on the opening day before facing Palestine on October 31 as 39 teams contest the qualifiers for 15 spots to join hosts Uzbekistan in the final championship which will be held in Central Asia for the first time.

The national team is fresh out of the 2021 West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) U-23 Championship in which it was crowned champs after beating host Saudi Arabia in the final. On their way to the title, in the group stages they beat Kuwait and Yemen 2-1 and lost to Oman 1-0.  In the semifinals, they eliminated Syria 5-2 as Saudi Arabia beat Iraq 1-0.

In 2015, Jordan was eliminated in the group stages of the first edition of the WAFF U-23 Championship won by Iran, before they moved to the Central Asian Football Association.

The WAFF Championship was part of final preparations for the U-23 Asian Championship. Jordan lately played Syria in two friendlies beating their guests 1-0 and drawing 2-2 in the second.

“We have a big responsibility,” coach Ahmad Hayel told the press before the qualifiers kicked off. “We won on the regional level, and now aim to be assertively present among the best of the continents’ teams,” Hayel, who was praised by observers as having well prepared Jordan’s upcoming national team, added.

Previously, the U-23 squad reached the AFC U-23 Championship four times: in 2014 they finished third; in 2016, they reached the quarter-finals; in 2018, they were knocked out of Round 1; and in 2020, they reached the quarterfinals of Championship — which was a qualifying tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

National team looks to Europe camp

Meanwhile, Jordan’s senior national team is awaiting the end of the league competition before holding a training camp where it will play Kosovo on November 10 and Belarus on November 16 as they prepare for the FIFA Arab Cup — Qatar 2021, in December.

The squad went up three spots to 90th when the latest FIFA Rankings were released.

Jordan is now 13th in Asia, still lagging behind relatively uncompetitive Asian teams compared to their best ranking of 37th in 2004.  Iran leads Asian standings followed by Japan, Australia, Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, China, Oman, Uzbekistan and Syria.

Last week, Jordan hosted a three-nation tournament in Amman, in which they beat 84th ranked Uzbekistan 3-0 and 154th ranked Malaysia 4-0. The two wins made up for the squad’s dismal performance after Jordan lost to little known Haiti 2-0 and managed a 2-1 win over Bahrain who beat Haiti lost 6-1 in the first friendly tourney since Iraqi coach Adnan Hamad took over after the removal of Belgian Vital Borkelmans following the early exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Jordan now needs to go through another stage of qualifying to get to the 2023 Asian Cup.

Jordan will play in Group C alongside, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Palestine in the FIFA Arab Cup. In the preliminary round qualifier, Jordan overcame South Sudan on a technicality after the latter was forced to forfeit the match with over 6 members of the squad contracting the Corona virus.

The Kingdom has taken part in past eight Arab Cups and hosted the 1988 edition. Iraq is record Arab Cup holder in 1964, 1966 1985 and 1988, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and 2002, Tunisia in 1963, Egypt in 1992 and Morocco in 2012.

Looking back at the Jordan’s peak performance, the team was on the verge of qualifying to the 2014 World Cup for the first time and advanced to play then World’s 6th ranked Uruguay in an intercontinental qualifying tie. The World Cup qualifying Round 3 was the furthest Jordan reached in the past seven times since taking part the 1986 qualifiers.
