Clinical Salah shows Man City what they are missing

LIVERPOOL — Two moments of magic from Mohamed Salah ensured Liverpool remain the only unbeaten side left in the Premier League this season after an enthralling 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

For 45 minutes City’s collective brilliance threatened to blow the Reds away and inflict a first league defeat at Anfield in front of supporters since 2017.

However, for all the beautiful football put together by Pep Guardiola’s array of creative midfielders, the English champions cannot call on a clinical finisher in the same league as Salah.

The Egyptian showed the other side to his game in creating Liverpool’s opening goal for Sadio Mane with a perfectly-weighted pass after skipping beyond Joao Cancelo.

But it was his finish for his side’s second that will live long in the memory.

Cancelo was this time one of four City defenders left trailing as Salah shrugged off the attentions of Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva before turning Aymeric Laporte and firing high past Ederson on his weaker right foot.

“Only the best players in the world score goals like this,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. “Absolutely exceptional.

“Because this club never forgets anything, people will still talk about this goal in 50-60 years when they remember this game.”

Salah has now scored in seven consecutive games and has nine in as many matches this season, evoking memories of his sensational 44-goal debut season at Anfield in 2017/18.

“Right now he is as sharp and as good as I’ve seen him,” former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I don’t see anyone playing better in the world at this moment in time. His record and his start to this season has been absolutely outstanding.”

Liverpool will need their main man to maintain those standards if they are to take the title back from City.

Eight days on from schooling Chelsea on their own patch, Guardiola’s men also had Liverpool chasing shadows for the first-half.

However, not for the first time this season, City did not make their dominance show on the scoreboard without a natural striker as chances came and went for Foden and De Bruyne.

Both midfielders made amends to equalise in the second-half and keep the early running for the title race tantalisingly poised.

Chelsea top the table by a point from Liverpool with City and Manchester United just one point further back after seven games.

Liverpool were the only one of the four realistic title contenders who did not spend over £100 million ($135 million) in the transfer window.

Ibrahima Konate’s arrival for £36 million was the Reds’ only summer signing and they may lack the depth of squad over the long haul, particularly with Salah and Mane set to depart for up to a month for the Africa Cup of Nations early next year.

Instead, Liverpool have invested heavily over the past two years in tying down their key players to long-term contracts with one notable exception.

Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho are among those to commit their future to the club.

Salah’s current deal is set to expire in 2023 and the 29-year-old knows his worth to Klopp’s men as negotiations over a new deal have dragged on.

Liverpool will have to splash out to get Salah to extend his stay, but on this form he is worth it as the man who could win them the league.

Jordan Pro League on break as Wihdat, Ramtha eye title

By - Oct 04,2021 - Last updated at Oct 05,2021

AMMAN — Jordan Professional Football League (Pro League) teams head into a two week break as the national teams agenda comes into focus with two more weeks left in the leading football competition.

As Week 19 ended, Ramtha stumbled in their 2-0 loss to former champs Faisali and could not take advantage of closest rival Wihdat’s 0-0 draw with Hussein that gave the titleholders the lead for now.

Salt remained third after a 1-1 draw with Sahab as Faisali climbed to fourth and Shabab Urdun went up a spot after drawing 1-1 with Jazira. Aqaba beat Ma’an 2-0 while Jalil beat Baqa’a 2-1.

Last week, Shabab Urdun’s 3-2 win over Wihdat gave Ramtha the chance to fight for the lead. Ma’an and Jalil are now likely to be the one of the teams to be relegated together with Baqa’a.

Faisali and Ramtha led the standings in most of Leg 1. Jazira, who led throughout the league in the past two years seem to have abandoned the fight for title and find themselves midway through the standings.

This season, the competition has witnessed inconsistent performances which also saw the national team eliminated from 2022 World Cup qualifiers, and now having to go through another stage of qualifying to get to the 2023 Asian Cup. The squad is now preparing for the FIFA Arab Cup.

So far in local competitions, Jalil, overcame Wihdat to win the 34th Jordan Football Association (JFA) Shield. Wihdat won their 14th title when they beat one-time winners Jazira in 38th Jordan Super Cup.

In the Jordan Cup, Wihdat, Hussein, Faisali have reached semis. Salt who were busy with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup matches played Ma’an Monday evening to determine the last semifinalist. Salt, who played their inaugural AFC Cup, were eliminated by Kuwait FC in the semifinals of the West Asia Zone while Faisali were knocked out in the group stages. Wihdat played Group D of the Asian Champions League, but were knocked out in the first round.

Last season, Wihdat won their 17th league title while Jazira finished runner-up, leaving Ramtha third and former champs Faisali settled for fifth after Salt. Sarih dropped alongside eight-time league champ veterans Ahli, who were also relegated last decade, but came back to win the Jordan Cup in 2015 and played in the AFC. Jalil and Baqa’a joined the 12-club Pro League this season.  Wihdat also won their 1oth JFA Shield. Faisali overcame Jazira to win their 17th Jordan Super Cup as the Jordan Cup was scrapped.

AMMAN — The FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021 (Division A) — ended in the capital on Sunday, with the top four teams qualifying to the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia.

Reigning titleholders Japan beat China 78-73 in the final of the 29th edition of the tournament. Australia beat South Korea 88-58  in the battle for third place.

In the semis, Japan, which had a superior defence, edged Australia 76-65 as the latter was close to scoring an upset, while China, which last won the title in 2011, upset record winners South Korea 93-69. New Zealand took 5th place after beating Chinese Taipei 74-59. The Philippines secured 7th spot after narrowly overcoming India 74-70. The latter was relegated to Division B of the 2023 FIBA Asia Cup after putting up a big fight for their spot in Division A.

A major tournament with leading teams from the continent participating, the tournament did not witness much fan attendance, with many of the early matches held during working hours for Jordanians. It marked the first time the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021 Division A is held in an Arab country. Amman will also host Division B matches in November.

Asian basketball teams are classified to two divisions: The same eight teams from the last Division A edition qualified to this years’ tournament, listed by their final position. Division B was not held in 2019, the therefore the last finishing Division A team was not relegated to this edition’s Division B.

As the event tipped off at Prince Hamza Arena, Division A teams played in two groups of four teams each. Holders Japan advanced to the semifinals from Group A after three consecutive wins: 136-46 over India 62-50 over New Zealand and 67-62 over record winners South Korea. South Korea beat Chinese Taipei 80-74 to advance to the semifinal against China.

China also advanced to the semifinals from Group B after three wins beating the Philippines 143-52, Chinese Taipei 124-50, and Australia 82-64. Australia beat neighbours New Zealand 72-61 and advanced to play to the semifinal against Japan.

The FIBA Women’s Asia Cup is an international basketball tournament which takes place every two years for national teams from FIBA Asia region. It was known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Championship until 2001, and the FIBA Asia Women’s Championship until 2015. Japan is titleholders and five-time winners, South Korea 12-time winners, China 11-time winners.

Among Arab teams Syria took part in 1986 (finishing 9th), Jordan in 1995 (finishing 11th) and Lebanon in 2001 (finishing 13th).

In addition to the Women’s Asia Cup Divisions A & B, Jordan will again host the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship for Women in 2022, which qualifies the winners to the FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup. Jordan took part in FIBA Asia U-18 in 1996 and finished 8th, and hosted the event in 2014 and finished 11th.

In the FIBA Asia U-16 Championship for Women, Jordan played in 2013 and finished 11th.

In men’s events, Jordan qualified to the FIBA Asia Cup after an unbeaten streak in qualifiers. The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will be played in Jakarta, Indonesia in July 2022, right after the window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asia qualifiers.

Jordan’s best showing at the FIBA Asia Cup (previously named FIBA Asia Championship) was third in 2009 and runner-up in 2011 when they reached the final for the first time in the country’s history, but lost the chance of qualifying to the 2012 Olympic Games after losing the final 70-69 to China. Jordan then played the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, but lost to Puerto Rico and Greece and was eliminated.

On the world scene, Jordan previously reached the FIBA Basketball World Cup — the world’s premier basketball competition twice — in 2010 and 2019. The basketball squad was the first and only Jordanian team to actually reach a World Cup in a team sport alongside the junior men’s team in 1995.

Ayla prepares to host Jordan Golf Open Championship

By - Oct 03,2021 - Last updated at Oct 03,2021

AMMAN — Jordan’s Golf Open Championship will kick off by the end of October with the participation of local, regional and international players at the Ayla Golf Club in Aqaba, according to the organiser.

The championship is organised by the Ayla Oasis Development Company in partnership with the Jordan Golf Federation.

The tournament is receiving global attention as the primary golf tournament in Jordan, with golf enthusiasts preparing to participate in this event. This comes in accordance with the government’s announcement of the third and final phase of opening commercial sectors (safe summer), which came into action in early September 2021.

Sahl Dudin, Ayla’s managing director, stressed the eagerness of Ayla to host this major sporting event by working in accordance with approved international practices with a high quality of performance to ensure a successful tournament. Delegation participants are ensured a comfortable stay throughout the tournament period.

“We are pleased with the on going partnership with the Jordan Golf Federation, as we have a long history of cooperation and combined efforts in serving the Jordanian athletic journey progress,” Dudin said.

“We are fully prepared to host the Jordan Open Golf Tournament, and we will launch a special sporting events agenda that will run through 2022.”

The Ayla Golf Club and Ayla began to develop a working plan and other necessary arrangements to host this grand event for the best possible outcomes, particularly those related to technical and administrative requirements including the smallest details for the success of the tournament.

In this context, the Head Golf Professional at Ayla Golf Club, the South African Golf Pro Jason Vermeulen formed several special committees to direct the tournament in accordance with the progress of golf in recent years. Preparations are underway for matches and main training courses as well as providing logistics services to ensure the comfort of participants.

The tournament is expected to witness strong competition due to the fact that it was approved as an international tournament where players can gain world ranking points. This will encourage participants to earn more points in order to advance their positions.

Ayla offers an integrated golf system with a prestigious international rating, including an 18-hole golf course with a rate of 72 strokes designed by the famous international designer Greg Norman, in tune with Ayla’s unique beach and landscape environment, and a specialised academy that provides the necessary training and education amenities with a nine-hole flood lit course.

Ayla has a distinguished record of hosting major sporting events such as the Jordan Mixed Open, as well as, the Arab Golf Tournament and the MENA Tours Journey to Jordan, both of which attract the best professionals in the game around the world.

Ayla continues to support Jordan Golf Federation and the Jordan Olympic Committee efforts to promote and spread golf locally by providing the necessary infrastructure and including Jordan as a major international sports hub, which promotes tourism to Aqaba and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone at the national level.

Liverpool, Man City battle for Premier League supremacy

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Liverpool and Manchester City resume their rivalry for top spot when they go head to head in the Premier League this weekend, while Chelsea and Manchester United aim to get their title challenges back on track.

Under Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, City and Liverpool have become the dominant forces in English football, sharing the past four Premier League titles between them.

City, who have won three of those, delivered a warning shot to the pretenders to their crown with a hugely impressive 1-0 win at Chelsea last weekend.

But it is Liverpool who boast the only unbeaten record after six games and find themselves a point clear of City, Chelsea and United, even though they dropped two points at Brentford last week.

City ended their long wait for a win away to Liverpool in emphatic fashion with a 4-1 victory in February but they have not won in front of a crowd at Anfield since 2003.

Fatigue could take its toll on Guardiola’s men after a draining week. Three days after their statement win at Stamford Bridge, the English champions were beaten 2-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital.

Liverpool, by contrast, were able to ease off the gas long before the end of a 5-1 Champions League win over Porto.

However, the Reds will be without right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad announced on Thursday with a groin problem.

“Obviously when you have something with your muscle, it’s not likely for Sunday,” said Klopp. “No muscle injury heals that quick.”

Everton threat to United

United needed all 95 minutes to edge past Villarreal in their midweek Champions League game, emerging as victors thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The late intervention from the Portuguese superstar stopped the rot for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men after a run of three defeats in four games.

But in truth United were lacklustre again, relying on goalkeeper David de Gea, who produced a string of vital saves.

Everton head to Old Trafford level on points with Solskjaer’s men after an impressive start to life under Rafael Benitez.

The Toffees are more than capable of following the example set by West Ham and Aston Villa, who have both won at the Theatre of Dreams in recent weeks, unless United show significant improvement.

Chelsea made a brilliant start to the season under Thomas Tuchel, picking up where they left off after beating Manchester City in the Champions League final in May.

City exacted a measure of revenge at Stamford Bridge last week and Chelsea slipped up again in the Champions League in midweek, losing 1-0 to Juventus.

But Tuchel’s men appear to have a relatively straightforward task as they seek to return to winning ways against winless Southampton at home.

Nuno needs response from Spurs

Just three weeks after topping the Premier League table, Nuno Espirito Santo’s position as Tottenham manager has been questioned by fans following three dismal league defeats on the spin.

Spurs have lost to Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal by a combined score of 9-1 to fall back into the bottom half of the table.

Nuno is yet to conjure the best from star forward Harry Kane, who failed to force a move away from his boyhood club during the transfer window.

And he has so far failed to instil the defensive organisation that was his calling card in three seasons at Wolves.

Another defeat when in-form Villa visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday would leave the Spurs faithful restless over the international break.

Serena, pioneer of ‘tennis intimidation’, turns 40

By - Oct 02,2021 - Last updated at Oct 02,2021

BIOT, France — Serena Williams turned 40 last month with her long-time coach hailing her as the “greatest of all time” and a pioneer of tennis “intimidation”.

The American superstar is frustratingly marooned on 23 Grand Slam titles, one short of the all-time record held by Margaret Court.

However, her French coach Patrick Mouratoglou told AFP that her legacy is secure.

“Margaret Court was playing at a time when three-quarters didn’t even go to Australia [for the Australian Open], where tennis was an amateur sport, when the draws were 16 players,” said Mouratoglou.

Court, an Australian, won 11 of her Grand Slam titles at her home event.

“I don’t mean to disrespect Margaret Court, but it’s another era. Yes, it would be better if Serena broke her record but, if she doesn’t, she will still be the greatest player of all time.”

Williams, whose sister Venus, a seven-time major winner, is still playing on tour at 41, won the last of her 23 Slams at the 2017 Australian Open.

It was achieved while she was pregnant with daughter Olympia who was born in September that year.

With former World No.1 Serena now down at 40 in the rankings, questions have been asked over her future in the sport.

“She still has it. The question is how much she wants it and what is she willing to do to get there?,” added her coach.

“Since she had her daughter, it’s harder. She has a lot of trouble not putting her life as a mother before her life as a player which is completely understandable.

“I think that’s the main reason she didn’t win a Grand Slam. Her family comes first and in order to be able to do great things in one area, that area can’t come second.

“She is reflecting and we will see what comes out of it.”

Williams has been beaten in her four Grand Slam final appearances since her 2017 Melbourne triumph.

She has not made the championship match at a major since Wimbledon in 2019.

She missed this year’s US Open in New York, where she won her first Slam in 1999, with a hamstring injury.

The last of her 73 career titles came in Auckland in January 2020.

If Williams fails to match Court’s record, Mouratoglou says she should be appreciated for the weapons she has brought to the sport — both on and off the court over her 26-year career.

“She changed tennis,” he insisted.

“She brought an athletic dimension that there was not there at all, she opened the doors, with her sister Venus, to a whole generation of players because it was a white sport.

“She invented tennis intimidation because she has a presence that makes others fear her. For a very long time, it was impressive.

“She also brought the business to women’s tennis. Before her, the business was very small and with her it became huge because she has such an aura, she has become such a marketing object, too, that huge contracts are possible for the players.”

Mouratoglou teamed up with Williams in 2012 and has seen her development as a player, physically and mentally.

He believes her only equal on the men’s side when it comes to sheer will to win is Novak Djokovic, who has three fewer Slams.

“At the very beginning, she was very lacking in confidence. She was not herself. But I knew who she was,” Mouratoglou explained.

“When she qualified for the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2012, when she was seventh in the world, I’m at the restaurant, she runs towards me with a smile, telling me ‘it’s great, whatever happens now I’m third in the world on Monday!’

“I told her ‘so what? I’m surprised you find that great, explain it to me.’ She felt really bad and didn’t answer me.

“But in the evening, she texted me: ‘Sorry for what I said earlier. Number three, it sucks, number two also.’ At that point, I reconnected her with herself.”

It was that same summer that Mouratoglou believes Williams played the best tennis of her life.

“The Olympics in London were exceptional. She won Wimbledon and the confidence that this victory gave her made her walk on water.

“She pulverised everyone at the Games. In the final, it’s 6-0, 6-1 against Sharapova! This is where she played the best tennis of her life, she was untouchable.

“At the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015, she won four consecutive Grand Slams, playing really well.

“In 2013, she told me that she hadn’t won Roland Garros for 11 years and would like to make it her goal. She didn’t lose a match on clay that year ... She won Charleston, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros, Bastad. Even Rafael Nadal never did that.”

Barcelona thumped and Chelsea beaten as Ronaldo rescues Man United

PARIS — Barcelona plunged even further into crisis on Wednesday with a thumping Champions League defeat at Benfica while holders Chelsea were beaten by Juventus but Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a precious last-gasp winner for Manchester United.

Ronald Koeman's Barcelona side already look at real risk of an early exit from this season's Champions League after suffering a second 3-0 defeat in as many games in Group E and finishing the match in Lisbon with 10 men.

Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez starred for Benfica, opening the scoring early on and then hitting the post early in the second half. He later completed the rout from the penalty spot following a Sergino Dest handball, while in between Rafa Silva also netted for the Portuguese former European Cup winners.

Eric Garcia was sent off for Barcelona, who have now conceded 11 goals in their last two visits to the Estadio da Luz, the scene of their 8-2 annihilation at the hands of Bayern Munich in the 2020 quarter-finals.

Barca are rock bottom of their group while Bayern followed their victory at the Camp Nou a fortnight ago with a 5-0 home win over Dynamo Kiev, with Robert Lewandowski's first-half brace setting the Bavarians on their way.

Lewandowski, who netted the opener from the penalty spot, now has a career tally of 77 Champions League goals, third in the all-time list behind Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added further goals after the break for a rampant Bayern.

Barcelona's defeat leaves Koeman — who took Benfica to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2006 — in an even more fragile position. They have made it to the knockout rounds in each of the last 17 seasons.

"I can't say anything because I don't know what the club feels about this," said Koeman about his future. "We'll see."

Juventus impress

Chelsea will still be expected to qualify for the last 16 despite losing 1-0 to Juventus in Turin with Federico Chiesa scoring the only goal of the game 10 seconds into the second half.

The star of Italy's Euro 2020-winning side latched onto Federico Bernardeschi's assist to beat Edouard Mendy and give Massimiliano Allegri's team a second straight win in Group H.

Juve are still adapting to life since the return of Allegri as coach and the departure of Ronaldo but this could be a formative result for them against the holders.

"We gave a cheap goal away and that made things more complicated for ourselves," said Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea had started their defence of the trophy with a 1-0 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg, and the Russian champions bounced back to beat Malmo 4-0.

Claudinho, who won Olympic gold with Brazil in Tokyo, opened the scoring before Daler Kuzyaev, Aleksei Sutormin and Wendel all added second-half goals.

United bounce back

Ronaldo popped up in the last of five minutes of stoppage time to score and give United a 2-1 win over Villarreal at Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard cutely set up Ronaldo to score his record-extending 136th goal in the competition as United bounced back from their last-gasp defeat to Young Boys in Bern last time out.

Alex Telles had earlier hauled the hosts back level on the hour mark with a superb first-time volley from a Bruno Fernandes delivery for his first goal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Paco Alcacer had given Villarreal the lead in what was a rematch of last season's Europa League final, won by the Spanish outfit on penalties.

"We had to throw caution to the wind and got lucky in the end," said Solskjaer. "When you've got Cristiano on the pitch there is always a chance."

United and Young Boys trail a point behind Group F leaders Atalanta, who defeated the Swiss champions 1-0 in Italy with a Matteo Pessina goal.

Teenage German starlet Karim Adeyemi netted two penalties, one in each half, as Red Bull Salzburg beat French champions Lille 2-1 to go top of Group G on four points.

Burak Yilmaz pulled one back for Lille but they prop up the section, while Sevilla snatched a 1-1 draw at Wolfsburg after a late Ivan Rakitic penalty cancelled out Renato Steffen's opener for the Germans, who had Josuha Guilavogui sent off.

AMMAN — The FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2021 (Division A) promises interesting semifinals in Amman as the continents top teams duel for their final positions.

The top four teams will qualify to the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Australia.

The 29th edition of the tournament — the first to be held in an Arab country — witnessed interesting matchups, although some matches were decisively won by the leading four sides of eight participating nations.

Asian basketball teams are classified to two divisions: The same eight teams from the last edition of Division A qualified to this years' tournament, listed by their final position. Since no Division B tournament was held in the 2019 edition, the last finishing team was not relegated to this edition's Division B.

As the event tipped off at Prince Hamza Arena, Division A teams played in two groups of four teams each. Titleholders Japan advanced to the semis from Group A after three consecutive wins: 136-46 over India, 62-50 over New Zealand and 67-62 over record winners South Korea.

China also advanced to the semifinals from Group B after three wins beating the Philippines 143-52, Chinese Taipei 124-50 and Australia 82-64.

To complete the semifinalists, on Thursday, South Korea beat Chinese Taipei 80-74 to advance to play against China, while Australia beat neighbour New Zealand 72-61 and advanced to play Japan. The Philippines won against India 74-70, for 7-8 positions, to secure their spot in Division A. For coming in last, India will be relegated to Division B.

Jordan will host the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021 (Division B) in November 2021.

The FIBA Women's Asia Cup is an international basketball tournament that takes place every two years for women's national teams from FIBA Asia region. It was known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Championship until 2001, and the FIBA Asia Women's Championship until 2015. Japan are titleholders and five-time winners, South Korea 12-time winners, China 11-time winners.

Among Arab teams Syria took part in 1986 (finishing 9th), Jordan in 1995 (finishing 11th) and Lebanon in 2001 (finishing 13th).

In addition to the Women’s Asia Cup Divisions A and B, Jordan will again host the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship for Women in 2022, which qualifies the winners to the FIBA U-19 Women's Basketball World Cup. Jordan took part in the championship in 1996 and finished 8th, and hosted the event in 2014 and finished 11th.

In the FIBA Asia U-16 Championship for Women, Jordan played in 2013 and finished 11th.

In men's events, Jordan qualified to the FIBA Asia Cup — the continent's leading basketball tournament after an unbeaten streak in qualifiers hosted in Amman. The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will be played in Jakarta, Indonesia, in July 2022, right after the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asia qualifiers.

Jordan's best showing at the FIBA Asia Cup (previously called FIBA Asia Championship) was third in 2009 and runner-up in 2011 when they reached the final for the first time in the country's history, but lost the chance of qualifying to the 2012 Olympic Games after losing the final 70-69 to China. Jordan next played the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, but lost to Puerto Rico and Greece then eliminated.

On the world scene, Jordan previously reached the FIBA Basketball World Cup — the world's premier basketball competition twice — in 2010 and 2019. The basketball squad was the first and only Jordanian team to actually reach a World Cup in a team sport twice alongside the junior men's team in 1995.

Salah, Firmino shine as Liverpool honour Hunt with Porto rout

By - Sep 29,2021 - Last updated at Sep 29,2021

PORTO, Portugal — Liverpool paid a fitting tribute to Roger Hunt as Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scored twice in a 5-1 demolition of Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side wore black armbands after former Liverpool striker Hunt died earlier in the day aged 83.

Hunt was part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side and is Liverpool’s record league goal-scorer with 244 goals.

“Roger Hunt comes second to no-one in his importance in the history of Liverpool FC, that much is clear,” Klopp said.

Liverpool honoured Hunt’s memory with a dominant display and some predatory finishing at Estadio do Dragao, aided by three mistakes from hapless Porto keeper Diogo Costa.

Three days after scoring his 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool in the 3-3 draw at Brentford, Egypt forward Salah maintained his blistering start to the season with the first half opener.

Senegal winger Sadio Mane followed with his fourth goal this season and Salah netted again after the interval.

Porto, who drew with Atletico Madrid in their group opener, got one back through Mehdi Taremi.

Firmino punished Costa’s third howler to claim Liverpool’s fourth and the Brazilian netted again in the closing stages.

“First and foremost the most important thing is the result. It is a massive one away at Porto,” Klopp said.

“Porto started pretty direct and we had struggles again, but we got it sorted on the pitch.

“We scored maybe not the most wonderful goals in the first half, but they were important ones.

“It was a really good night for us. We played wonderful football between the lines. It’s a good start to the group.”

After beating AC Milan in their first game, Liverpool sit top of Group B with the maximum six points.

Such was Liverpool’s superiority that Klopp could even afford to take off Salah and Mane with over 20 minutes left.

It was the perfect preparation for the Premier League leaders’ crucial clash with champions Manchester City on Sunday.

Ruthless Reds

Porto lost veteran defender Pepe to an injury suffered in the warm-up and they suffered another blow when Otavio limped off in tears with an apparent hamstring problem after 14 minutes.

Sergio Conceicao’s side were unable to overcome those problems and Liverpool went ahead in the 18th minute.

Curtis Jones, who was at the heart of all Liverpool’s best moments, made a buccaneering run into the Porto area and Costa weakly pushed out his stinging shot.

It bounced off Zaidu Sanusi to Salah, who prodded home from virtually on the goal-line.

That made Salah the third African player to reach 30 Champions League goals after Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o.

Costa was culpable again when Liverpool increased their advantage in the 45th minute.

Milner whipped a low cross into the six-yard box and Costa inexplicably put his arms behind his back to leave Mane with a tap-in at the far post.

Liverpool were in complete control and Salah put the result beyond doubt on the hour, taking Jones’ pass in stride and slotting past Costa from 12 yards.

MANILA — Philippine boxing legend and 2022 presidential hopeful Manny Pacquiao said on Wednesday that he is hanging up his gloves after a glittering decades-long career in the ring.

The multi-division world champion and senator, who has his sights set on a high-stakes rumble to replace President Rodrigo Duterte, said quitting the sport that lifted him out of poverty was the “hardest decision” of his life.

“It is difficult for me to accept that my time for me as a boxer is over,” the 42-year-old said in a video message on Twitter that quickly went viral.

“Today I am announcing my retirement,” added Pacquiao, whose fights during his heyday stopped traffic in the Philippines — and even supposedly crime.

It comes weeks after Pacquiao, considered one of the best boxers of all time, lost what turned out to be his last professional fight, against Cuban Yordenis Ugas in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, who entered politics in 2010 as a congressman before being elected to the Senate, said last week that he will make a tilt for the country’s highest office.

Pacquiao, a married father of five, thanked his millions of fans around the world and paid special tribute to his long-time trainer Freddie Roach who he described as “my family, a brother and a friend”.

The decision ends weeks of speculation that Pacquiao was planning to retire after 26 years as a professional boxer. He ended with a 62-8 win-loss record and two draws.

“He’s gonna go down as a legend of not just boxing but of the sporting world,” Ted Lerner, a US-born sports journalist in the Philippines, told AFP.

“In the future... his name will be sort of synonymous with greatness, in the level of Michael Jordan or people who have transcended their sport and become like mythical legends.”

In the video message, Pacquiao said boxing had given him “the chance to fight my way out of poverty” and “the courage to change more lives”.

“I will never forget what I have done and accomplished in my life. I can’t imagine I just heard the final bell,” said Pacquiao, who retired briefly in 2016 before reversing the decision.

Pacquiao is idolised by many in the Philippines both for his punching power and rise from desperate street kid to the peak of boxing.

He dropped out of high school at 14, sold doughnuts on the roadside and became a grocery stacker to help his mother support two younger siblings.

Within a few years, the diminutive southpaw was a pro boxer destined for the big time.

News of his retirement was greeted with mixed feelings in his southern hometown of General Santos, where support for the boxer runs deep.

“I am both happy and sad,” Anna Rodriguez, 24, told AFP.

“I am happy because he will be able to spend more time with his family, but I’m also sad because he will no longer bring pride to General Santos.”

Manila taxi driver Jerry Barilea told AFP it was the right time for Pacquiao to bow out.

“He’s getting old, he really can’t do it anymore,” the 58-year-old said.
