Barcelona hail return of ‘absolute legend’ coach Xavi

BARCELONA — Barcelona confirmed the return of Xavi Hernandez as coach on Saturday, with the legendary midfielder facing an immense challenge to restore the fallen Spanish giants to their former glory.

The Spaniard left Camp Nou to play for Al Sadd in 2015, after making 767 appearances for the Catalan club, which included winning eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.

“It’s time to come home. Welcome, Xavi,” Barca tweeted.

“It wasn’t goodbye, it was see you later,” it wrote, along with a video montage of the player’s departure in 2015.

Barcelona said in a statement it had reached an agreement with Xavi to become first team coach for the rest of the current season and two more seasons, replacing the sacked Ronald Koeman.

“It is expected that Xavi Hernandez will arrive in Barcelona this weekend and that on Monday 8 November his presentation as new FC Barcelona first team coach will take place in an event open to the public at Camp Nou,” it said.

Nicknamed the “Maquina” (the Machine), Xavi is widely considered one of the club’s greatest ever players and there is huge excitement about his potential as a coach after his influence on the iconic Barca team managed by Pep Guardiola.

His passing style was seen as the embodiment of Guardiola’s “tiki-taka” team that won the treble in 2009.

“One of the greatest midfield maestros of all time, he helped redefine the art with his creative mind, pinpoint passing and sublime ability to read the game,” Barca said in their statement, heralding the return of “an absolute legend”.

Qatari club Al Sadd, which Xavi had coached since 2019, hours earlier said they had reached an agreement with Barca and posted photos on social media of the Spaniard saying goodbye to the players and staff.

 ‘The dream’

Barcelona’s attempt to appoint Xavi as coach had been held up on Friday over his Al Sadd release clause, with Xavi and Barca considering splitting the payment to complete the deal.

Al Sadd said Barca had agreed to pay the clause in Xavi’s contract, which is reportedly set at around five million euros ($5.8 million), but Barcelona did not give any details of the deal in their statement.

Xavi had made no secret of his desire to return to Barcelona, which he joined through the club’s La Masia academy at the age of 11.

“My main objective, when I can do it, is Barca,” Xavi told the sports daily Marca last year. “It’s my home, that’s the dream.”

There are high hopes Xavi can draw on his incredible playing career to revive Barcelona, who currently sit ninth in La Liga, with concerns growing they might not finish in the top four.

The club are also in dire financial straits, having posted debts of 1.35 billion euros.

Xavi faces a formidable challenge after Barcelona let Lionel Messi join Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

In Europe, Barca face a fight even to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League while any rebuild will have to be carried out on a shoestring budget as the club struggles to deal with the debts it partly built up paying Messi’s wages.

Xavi will also be charged with improving the team’s style of play, which was a key criticism during the tenure of Koeman, another former Barca player.

Amman hosts FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division B

Women’s basketball team back to Asia Cup after an absence of 26 years

By - Nov 07,2021 - Last updated at Nov 07,2021

AMMAN — The FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021 (Division B) — tips off in Amman with six teams competing from November 7-13 with hosts Jordan playing in Group B alongside Kazakhstan and Indonesia, while Group A includes Iran, Lebanon, Syria.

Jordan plays Indonesia at 7pm on November 8 and Kazakhstan on November 9. The top team from each group will automatically move to the semis while the second and third in each group play a knockout round on November 10. The losers will then play for 5-6 spots on November 12, while the winners advance to the semis. The top team in the tournament will be promoted to Division A. Missing the event are Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

The national team just ended a training camp in Turkey and this week signed a pro player to join the lineup. The preparations and support are quite different from when the team first took part in 1995.

Jordan is back to the competition after an absence of 26 years when the squad took part in Shizuoka, Japan, in circumstances that are very different from this day and age. The players, not only had a short time to train and play Asian teams, but they actually fundraised themselves with team managers to cover the trip’s expenses.

When the team was short of its last JD5,000 needed to secure the flight tickets, an article published in The Jordan Times caught HRH Prince Hassan’s attention, who immediately called team managers and covered the missing funds needed. That historic participation was Jordan’s first ever Asian appearance for a women’s sports team, and the team won one match beating Indonesia 58-55 to finish 11th.

“Being back in FIBA Women’s Asia Cup is long overdue, but I hope Jordan becomes a regular participant,” Fadi Sabbah, who was the team coach in 1995 told The Jordan Times. “I wish the new squad all the best, and wish they had the chance to see our 1995 squad in action. They had a never-say-die attitude, relentless defence and a magical team spirit,” he noted, adding, “the players will be in the arena cheering on their successors”.

Rana Husseini, the 1995 team’s captain underlined “hosting the championship in Jordan will give our players a big boost and inspire the younger generations”.

“The obstacles were many and I remember arriving on the day of our first game because of last minute travel arrangements, but managing to play in a major international championship and raise Jordan’s flag is a dream for any player and I am hopeful the current team will carry that flag forward,” she added.

Hala Muheisen, the team’s fiery playmaker reminisced on the difficulties back then. “I was so proud and happy to play in Asia, as the obstacles were immense. I’m happy for the new generation, but I hope official support does not remain haphazard,” she said.

Teammate Hind Al Ghouri added: “Memories on an off the court is what binds us. Asian teams did not know women’s basketball existed in Jordan. I remember Japanese fans cheering for us after each match. It’s something I’m proud to discuss with my children now.”

The current team captain is no less passionate. At 34, the mothers of two and career banker, Dana Fadda’s basketball career demonstrates how overdue the Jordanian participation is.

Fadda started playing in 2001 for the Orthodox Club and it will only be now that she will represent Jordan on the Asian scene. She played for Jordan in Arab championships and became the first basketball player to play pro in Bahrain before moving to Fuheis Club. Fadda was MVP and best rebounder and all star player in the last league.

Comparing notes on the base of the game, and the status of women’s basketball in the country, players note there were 4 clubs playing the game when the 1995 national squad was regrouped, and now it’s 2-3 clubs. That leaves little room to promote the game and have a bigger base to choose from for the national squad.

In an interview with The Jordan Times, Fadda underlined that “individual effort and love of the game is what kept many players going”. Noting the team has a big responsibility on its shoulders, she added: “We are mentally ready, but would have hoped since Division B was scheduled and set to be held in Amman that the team regrouped far longer ago.”

“My hope is that there will be a sustained effort to keep the women’s team and take it to another competitive level,” she added.

Asian basketball teams are classified to two divisions: FIBA Women’s Asia Cup (Division A) was recently held in Amman with the top four teams qualifying to the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia. A major tournament with leading teams from the continent participating, the tournament marked the first time the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021 Division A is held in an Arab country.

Reigning holders Japan made it past China in the final of the 29th edition of the tournament. Australia scored a major upset over South Korea in the battle for third place. New Zealand took 5th place after beating Chinese Taipei and the Philippines secured 7th spot after narrowly overcoming India. The latter was relegated to Division B of the 2023 FIBA Asia Cup after putting up a big fight for their spot in Division A.

The same eight teams from the last Division A edition had qualified to this years’ tournament, listed by their final position. Division B was not held in 2019.

The FIBA Women’s Asia Cup is an international basketball tournament which takes place every two years for national teams from FIBA Asia region. It was known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Championship until 2001, and the FIBA Asia Women’s Championship until 2015. Japan is Division A titleholders and 5 time winners, South Korea 12 time winners, China 11 time winners.

Among Arab teams, Division B saw Syria played in 1986 (finishing 9th), Jordan in 1995 (finishing 11th) and Lebanon in 2001 (finishing 13th).

In addition to the Women’s Asia Cup Divisions A & B, Jordan will again host the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship for Women in 2022, which qualifies the winners to the FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Ramtha win Jordan Pro League title after 39 years

Jordan Cup ends football season

By - Nov 07,2021 - Last updated at Nov 07,2021

AMMAN — It has been a football season that fans are likely to talk about for years.

Over the weekend, Ramtha took home the Jordan Professional Football League (Pro League) title for the third time in their history, ending a 39 year drought in the final week of the competition.

Earlier in this season, a newcomer to the Pro League, relatively unknown Jalil, overcame Wihdat to win the 34th Jordan Football Association (JFA) Shield. Among the veteran teams, Wihdat beat one-time winners Jazira in the 38th Jordan Super Cup. And now, only the Jordan Cup remains up for grabs later his month with four teams in contention: Wihdat, Faisali, Hussein and Salt.

Ramtha tied Jazira 1-1 to seal the league title on the weekend as a win or draw was enough to hand them the title they last celebrated in 1981 and 1982. Last season’s titleholders Wihdat had an easier encounter and beat Aqaba 5-0 to settle for second place. The reigning champs’ shot at the title hung in the balance only in case Ramtha lost. The top two eventually tied in overall points and Ramtha won on head-to-head encounters.

Wihdat stumbled in the past three weeks, especially when they were held 1-1 with Jazira and lost 3-2 to Shabab Urdun. Salt remained third after they held Ma’an 1-1, Faisali came in fourth after they held Hussein 0-0 while Sahab beat Baqa’a 4-1 in a match officiated by an all female team for the first time in Jordan. Baqa’a were relegated in their worst season yet and were accompanied by Jalil who lost 5-0 to Shabab Urdun.

Jazira, who led throughout the league in the past two years, abandoned the fight for title and ended up 7th, while Ma’an, Aqaba and Sahab held on to their spots among the top teams.

This season, regionally, Salt, who played their inaugural Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, were eliminated by Kuwait FC in the semifinals of the West Asia Zone while Faisali were knocked out in the group stages. Wihdat played Group D of the Asian Champions League, but were knocked out in the first round.

In the 2020 season, Wihdat won their 17th league title, trailed by Jazira in runner-up spot and Ramtha were third. Wihdat also won their 10th JFA Shield. Faisali overcame Jazira to win their 17th Jordan Super Cup as the Jordan Cup was scrapped from the agenda for the first time since the competition kicked off in 1980.

Since the league kicked off in 1944 with only Faisali, Ahli, Urdun and Homenetmen competing, Faisali are 34-time record league champs while Wihdat won 17 times since they joined in 1980. Although Faisali are the all-time record titleholders, Wihdat’s record is quite impressive. After four years in the Pro League, they won their first title in 1980 and have gone on to win the majority of titles ever since. Ahli won eight times, Ramtha and Jazira three times each, Shabab Urdun twice, Amman and Urdun clubs once each.

Liverpool and Ajax reach Champions League last 16, PSG denied last minute

PARIS — Liverpool and Ajax kept up their perfect records in the Champions League this season to qualify for the last 16 on Wednesday, while a Paris Saint-Germain side missing Lionel Messi were held by RB Leipzig.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool blew Atletico Madrid away in a whirlwind start at Anfield, with Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane scoring in the first 21 minutes to secure a 2-0 win against opponents who finished with 10 men.

Atletico's Brazilian defender Felipe was sent off for a foul on Mane before half-time, as the 2019 Champions League winners made it four wins out of four in Group B.

Liverpool are now guaranteed to top the group, sitting seven points clear of Porto with two games remaining, while Atletico are another point back in third.

"You earn a lot of money to win Champions League games. The first target was to get through this group but we did it with two games to go," Klopp told BT Sport.

"I didn't expect we would be through after four games but the boys did it and it's really well-deserved."

Porto drew 1-1 away to AC Milan, as Chancel Mbemba's own goal at San Siro cancelled out Luis Diaz's early opener for the Portuguese side.

It was a first point in the group for seven-time former European champions Milan, who maintain a slim chance of reaching the knockout phase in their first appearance in the competition since 2013-14.

Haller on fire

Ajax continued their marvellous run in Europe this season by coming from behind to win 3-1 at 10-man Borussia Dortmund as Sebastien Haller scored his seventh goal in just four Champions League appearances.

A Dortmund side missing the injured Erling Haaland had Mats Hummels harshly sent off before the half-hour mark after he slid in on Ajax's Brazilian winger Antony.

However, English referee Michael Oliver then awarded Dortmund a penalty for a foul on Jude Bellingham following a VAR review, and Marco Reus converted from 12 yards.

Yet Ajax equalised in the 72nd minute as Dusan Tadic nipped in at the back post to score.

Ivory Coast striker Haller then headed in Antony's cross, becoming the first player to score in each of his first four Champions League appearances since Haaland in 2019.

Davy Klaassen wrapped up the win from another Antony assist in stoppage time, meaning Erik ten Hag's Ajax have scored 14 goals in winning all four games so far in Group C.

"We want to annoy Europe's elite teams. We're not saying we are favourites, but nobody wants to get Ajax in the draw," Ten Hag told broadcaster DAZN.

Ajax will go through with either Dortmund or Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese side boosting their hopes by crushing Besiktas 4-0.

Pedro Goncalves scored twice in the first half including a penalty, while Paulinho and Pablo Sarabia also struck for Sporting.

Besiktas, who had Brazilian midfielder Souza sent off, are eliminated.

Messi missed PSG's trip to Germany due to injury, and without him Mauricio Pochettino's side came from behind to lead before conceding a late penalty and settling for a 2-2 draw.

Christopher Nkunku headed Leipzig in front before Andre Silva had a 12th-minute penalty saved.

Kylian Mbappe set up Georginio Wijnaldum to equalise midway through the first half and the Dutchman headed in another before the break, the goal standing despite initially being flagged offside.

However, a Presnel Kimpembe foul was spotted after a VAR review in the last minute and Dominik Szoboszlai scored from the spot to make it 2-2.

"We are disappointed, but our objective remains to win the group and qualify," said Pochettino.

Benzema gets Real's 1000th goal

Leipzig are eliminated despite the draw, while Manchester City move above PSG to the top of Group A thanks to their 4-1 home win against Club Brugge.

Phil Foden's opener was cancelled out by a John Stones own-goal, but Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus all scored in the second half for City.

Real Madrid are two points clear of Inter Milan at the top of Group D after Karim Benzema netted twice in a 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Benzema's opener was Real's 1000th European Cup goal and the Frenchman got the winner after Fernando had brought Shakhtar level.

Inter won 3-1 at Sheriff Tiraspol, with Marcelo Brozovic, Milan Skriniar and Alexis Sanchez all on target in the second half before Adama Traore pulled one back.

Bayern reach last 16 as Lewandowski hits hat-trick

MUNICH, Germany — Robert Lewandowski marked reaching the milestone of 100 Champions League appearances with a hat-trick on Tuesday as Bayern Munich punched their ticket for the last 16 with a 5-2 home win over Benfica.

Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane scored for Bayern at the Allianz Arena while Benfica’s Morato and Darwin Nunez netted for the visitors.

Lewandowski, who also had a penalty saved, has now chalked up 81 Champions League goals and 100 appearances since his competition debut for ex-club Dortmund a decade ago.

“I never thought I would have so many games with so many goals,” Lewandowski told Amazon.

“In the first 20 minutes I hardly got the ball, which makes it hard for a striker to stay patient.

“After the first goal, it always goes a bit easier.”

Bayern’s fourth straight win in Europe guarantees them a last 16 place with two group games left as they hold a six-point lead at the top of Group E.

This was Julian Nagelsmann’s first game back on the Bayern bench as the head coach missed the previous four games after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Overall, that was an unbelievably good game from us, better than in the last few weeks,” said Nagelsmann.

Bayern had an early scare when Manuel Neuer was beaten by a Lucas Verissimo header, but replays showed Benfica captain Pizzi was offside.

Lewandowski headed Bayern into the lead after Kingsley Coman turned his marker Alejandro Grimaldo, then floated a chip to the back post on 26 minutes where the Poland striker was waiting.

A second goal followed six minutes later when Benjamin Pavard lifted his pass over the defence which Lewandowski played to Gnabry, who backheeled past visiting goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Yet Bayern didn’t have things all their own way.

Morato gave Benfica a lifeline before the break when he met Grimaldo’s cross at the far post.

It was the first goal Bayern have conceded in four Champions League games this season.

After replays showed a Leon Goretzka shot was blocked by Verissimo’s forearm, Bayern were awarded a penalty but Lewandowski hit a weak shot straight into Vlachodimos’ grateful arms as it stayed 2-1 at the break.

Bayern pulled away four minutes into the second half when Sane volleyed in their third goal, set up by winger Alphonso Davies on his birthday — 21 years after he was born in a refugee camp in Ghana.

Lewandowski chalked up his second goal when he motored into the area and fired home on 61 minutes.

Yet, the hosts were guilty of coasting and when Marcel Sabitzer gave away possession, Benfica counter attacked at speed with Darwin Nunez finishing the move to make it 4-2 on 72 minutes.

However the night belonged to Lewandowski who wrapped up his hat-trick six minutes from time with a lethal chip after a pin-point accurate long ball from Bayern goalkeeper Neuer.

Captain Paulo Dybala’s brace helped Juventus to a 4-2 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg in Turin as they kept up their 100 per cent record in Group H to secure a last-16 place.

Dybala’s early opener was cancelled out when Leonardo Bonucci headed into his own net, but the Argentine international restored Juve’s lead just before the hour, netting a penalty which he had initially missed before being granted a retake.

Federico Chiesa and Alvaro Morata added further goals for Massimiliano Allegri’s team before Sardar Azmoun pulled one back in stoppage time.

Juve are three points clear of reigning European champions Chelsea, who beat Malmo 1-0 in Sweden with a second-half Hakim Ziyech goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, who were again without Romelu Lukaku, need one more point to be certain of advancing.

Meanwhile managerless Barcelona boosted their qualification hopes, Ansu Fati’s goal in Ukraine securing a second straight 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev to lift them up to second above Benfica.

Red Bull Salzburg could have sealed progress from Group G but instead the Austrians went down 2-1 to Wolfsburg in Germany.

Ridle Baku and Lukas Nmecha scored for Wolfsburg either side of a Maximilian Woeber free-kick.

Lille and Wolfsburg are now just two points behind group leaders Salzburg after the French side came from behind to win 2-1 at Sevilla.

Lucas Ocampos gave Sevilla the lead but Jonathan David levelled with a penalty and Jonathan Ikone secured Lille’s first win in 11 Champions League games.

Liverpool prepare again for Atletico Madrid

By - Nov 02,2021 - Last updated at Nov 04,2021

MADRID — Jurgen Klopp wants to say the right things when it comes to Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone but there is always an itch he ends up scratching.

Liverpool play Atletico again in the Champions League on Wednesday in a game that this time carries more significance for the Spaniards than the Reds.

Klopp’s team are already five points clear at the top of a group that looked awkward when the draw came out in August.

Atletico are in a scrap, level on four points with Porto, whom they still have to play in Lisbon in the final round.

In theory, the pressure on Liverpool should be reduced and yet this fixture keeps finding a way to irritate the German, to push his buttons and draw reactions he later has to rephrase or retract.

This will be the fourth meeting between the sides in the past 18 months. Atletico claimed victory in a thrilling knock-out tie last year after winning 1-0 at home, and 3-2 after extra-time away.

Liverpool then won by the same scoreline in Madrid last month, capitalising on a red card for Antoine Griezmann and a penalty, scored by the blistering Mohamed Salah.

For the last decade, Klopp has been one of the game’s most charming characters and charismatic voices.

He is not a coach that seeks confrontation, either deliberately or desperately, as a technique to get the best out of players. His jabs at Atletico feel out of sync and out of character.

There have been several, but the most notable came after the loss at Anfield last year. “I don’t understand with the quality they have to be honest, that they play this kind of football. I don’t understand that,” Klopp told BT Sport.

“When I see players like Koke, Saul [Niguez], [Marcos] Llorente — they could play proper football but they stand deep and have counter attacks. But they beat us that’s how it is.”

In the first leg, Klopp substituted Sadio Mane, worried about Atletico’s attempts to get him sent off. “I was afraid his opponent would go down if he took a deep breath,” he said.

He noted Atletico’s celebrations at the end.

“I saw a lot of happy faces among their players and staff, but it’s not over,” said Klopp. He also seemed irked by Simeone’s antics on the touchline.

“Wow, that’s energy,” he said.

“I hope I can be a little more focused in the second leg.”

After winning in Madrid, a grinning Klopp sarcastically waved down the tunnel at Simeone, who habitually avoids shaking the other coach’s hand.

“I wanted to shake his hand and he was running off,” he said. “I’m also not overly happy with my reaction to be honest.”

Klopp has also stayed true to his more professional instincts, offering generous praise of Atletico and Simeone, if not for their style, then their achievements.

“His teams are always well-organised, world class, so that makes him one of the best coaches,” he said before the first meeting in 2020. Afterwards he said: “Their defence was exceptional.”

And he has tried to smooth over previous comments when they have resurfaced. “I’m not the Pope of football,” he said after the last match. “What does it matter what I like?”

To fulfil their obligations with television companies, coaches are required to speak within minutes of the final whistle. In some ways it is incredible more do not err from diplomacy.

There is something about Atletico, though, that wrangles with Klopp, their beliefs about how the game should be played, and won, so different to his that the usual rules seem to get forgotten.

It is perhaps surprising even that against Liverpool, other opponents have not tried an Atletico-like approach.

There is also an irony in finding frustration with Atletico’s negative tactics now, at a time when they are more open than ever under Simeone.

Trying to squeeze Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix and Luis Suarez into the same team has come at a cost. “We are worried about it and we’re working on it,” Simeone said last month.

Klopp’s impatience is perhaps a compliment to Atletico, to the depths Liverpool had to go to beat them and the battle they know they will face this week.

It is an indication too of the fervour with which Klopp holds his own beliefs and the relentlessness that brings his players along with him.

But perhaps most of all, it is good drama, a healthy, on going disagreement between two of the game’s greatest coaches about how best to win.

“It’s not too bad,” said Klopp. “When we see each other we’ll shake hands.”

Jazz hold off NBA champion Bucks, Durant ejected in Nets’ dominating win

LOS ANGELES — Mike Conley scored 20 points in his return to the line-up and Donovan Mitchell tallied a team-high 28 points as the Utaz Jazz beat the reigning NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks 107-95 on Sunday.

Mitchell scored 11 of his points in the fourth quarter as the Jazz never trailed in front of a crowd of 17,300 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

“We really executed when we needed to,” said Mitchell. “They’re NBA champions. They’re not going to just go down 15 and call it a day.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Bucks, who trailed at one stage by 17 points but rallied to cut the Jazz lead to just four points in the final quarter.

Former Jazz player Grayson Allen finished with 18 points for the Bucks, who lost at home for the third time in a three-game homestand. Milwaukee also slipped below .500 at 3-4 with a third straight loss.

The Jazz took a 99-87 lead with just over three minutes left in the fourth thanks to Mitchell’s seven points in two minutes of action.

But the Bucks clawed their way back as Allen made two three-pointers and Thanasis Antetokounmpo made a dunk to cut the Jazz lead to 99-95 with 99 seconds left.

Mitchell stretched the Jazz’s lead to six with a basket, and Royce O’Neale made a clutch defensive play by blocking an Allen three-point attempt to extinguish the Bucks’ comeback bid.

The victory was the fifth in six games for Utah, which suffered its first loss of the season in Chicago on Saturday.

“You look at tonight and you look at the way last night went, two polar opposite situations,” Mitchell said. “I think there were times Chicago really amped up the pressure and we weren’t ready for it. [The Bucks] did it again tonight and we were ready for it.”

Elsewhere, James Harden had a triple double and Kevin Durant scored 23 points before being ejected in the third quarter of the Brooklyn Nets 117-91 win over the Detroit Pistons.

Durant was thrown out of the game for a flagrant foul with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter.

Officials sent him to the showers after he hit Kelly Olynyk in the face with his right arm. Durant shot 10-of-13 from the field before getting ejected.

Harden produced his 59th career triple-double with 18 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds as the Nets led by as many as 30 at one stage. He is now the Nets all-time leader with 13 triple-doubles, and joined Larry Bird for second on the NBA’s all-time list with his 59.

It was Durant’s second incident in as many games. He was slapped with a technical in Brooklyn’s 105-98 win over Indiana on Friday for tossing the ball into the stands after a foul was called. He was later fined $25,000 by the league.

“I tried to run through the screen,” Durant said. “That was the result of me trying to blow the screen up.”

In Dallas, Luka Doncic capped a team-high 23-point night with a clutch three-pointer as the Dallas Mavericks beat the Sacramento Kings 105-99.

Doncic also dished out 10 assists and eight rebounds for the Mavericks, who shot 44.4 per cent from the field after having been held to 29.5 per cent in a Friday loss to Denver.

Richaun Holmes posted a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Kings, who had a two-game win streak snapped.

LaMelo Ball also scored 27 points and Kelly Oubre came off the bench to score 26 in powering the Charlotte Hornets to a 125-113 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Ball also had nine rebounds and seven assists to bounce back from a sub-par performance in his previous outings. The NBA Rookie of the Year had just 13 points on five-of-28 shooting from the floor in a win over Orlando on Wednesday and a Friday loss to Miami.

Ramtha one match away from Jordan Pro League title

By - Nov 01,2021 - Last updated at Nov 01,2021

AMMAN — Ramtha are a match away from their first Jordan Professional Fooball League (Pro League) title in 39 years when the final week of the competition is played November 2-4.

Ramtha remained atop the standings with a 4-2 win over Shabab Urdun, and a win or draw against Jazira is enough to hand them the title they last celebrated in 1981 and 1982.

Titleholders Wihdat had an easier encounter beating Sahab 2-0 to trail two points behind, and next play Aqaba who managed to hold on to their spot in the Pro League.

Salt remained third after they held Faisali 1-1 as the latter remained fourth. Salt will next play Ma’an who are looking for a win or draw to improve their standings.

Wihdat stumbled in the past three weeks, especially when they were held 1-1 with Jazira and lost 3-2 to Shabab Urdun.  The latter will play Jalil who are looking for a win while hoping Ma’an lose to have a shot at staying in the Pro League.

Wihdat fans and ex-coaches are astonished after the team had two draws and a loss during the final stretch. The reigning champs have a shot at the title only in case they win and Ramtha lose. Similarly, Ramtha could have secured the title sooner had they not stumbled in their 2-0 loss to former champs Faisali when Wihdat drew 0-0 draw with Hussein.

Hussein who will play Faisali this week are now fifth after they beat Baqa’a 2-1 while Aqaba moved up to 8th when they stunned Jazira 4-0. At the other end of the standings, Ma’an secured their place in the group after they beat Jalil 1-0 in a vital match to move up to 10th, as the latter is now likely to be the team to be relegated alongside Baqa’a who will face Sahab in their last match.

Faisali and Ramtha led the standings in most of Leg 1. Jazira, who led throughout the league in the past two years, abandoned the fight for title and find themselves midway through the standings.

This season, the Jordan Cup is still undecided with Wihdat, Hussein, Faisali having reached the semis. Salt, who were busy with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup matches, were the last to reach the semis after they overcame Ma’an.

Earlier this season, Wihdat won their 14th title when they beat one-time winners Jazira in 38th Jordan Super Cup. In the 34th Jordan Football Association Shield, a newcomer to the Pro League, relatively unknown Jalil, overcame Wihdat to win the title.

Regionally, Salt, who played their inaugural AFC Cup, were eliminated by Kuwait FC in the semifinals of the West Asia Zone while Faisali were knocked out in the group stages. Wihdat played Group D of the Asian Champions League but were knocked out in the first round.

Last season, Wihdat won their 17th league title while Jazira finished runner-up, leaving Ramtha third and former champs Faisali settled for fifth after Salt. Sarih dropped alongside eight-time league champ veterans Ahli who were also relegated last decade but came back to win the Jordan Cup in 2015 and also played in the AFC. Jalil and Baqa’a joined the 12-club Pro League this year. Wihdat also won their 10th JFA Shield. Faisali overcame Jazira to win their 17th Jordan Super Cup as the Jordan Cup was scrapped from the agenda for the first time since the competition kicked off in 1980.

Since the league kicked off in 1944 with only Faisali, Ahli, Urdun and Homenetmen competing, Faisali are 34 time record league champs while Wihdat won 17 times since they joined in 1980. Although Faisali are the all-time record titleholders, Wihdat’s record is quite impressive, winning their first title in 1980 and going on to win the majority of titles since then. Ahli won eight times, Jazira three times, Ramtha and Shabab Urdun twice each, Amman and Urdun clubs once each.

Mueller urges Bayern to answer cup criticism

By - Nov 01,2021 - Last updated at Nov 01,2021

BERLIN — Thomas Mueller says Bayern Munich must use the criticism from their shock German Cup disaster to help them secure a spot in the Champions League knockout phase by beating Benfica on Tuesday.

“When FC Bayern crashes out of the cup with a 5-0 defeat, it’s clear that one or two comments are made that are slightly below the belt,” said Mueller.

The 32-year-old scored and created three assists Saturday as Bayern romped to a 5-2 win at Union Berlin to stay top of the Bundesliga three days after their 5-0 cup thrashing at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

In Europe, Bayern are five points clear in Group E and a win over second-placed Benfica would guarantee a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Bayern were hurt by a string of negative headlines amid the fallout of their shock cup defeat which Mueller wants to use as extra motivation.

“[The criticism] is okay with me, we’re not made of egg shells — you have to be able to take it sometimes, but we must not forget that we are still out of the cup,” said Mueller.

“We didn’t just lose a game, but [are out of] a competition that means a lot to us. We have to deal with that accordingly,” he added.

Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski, who netted twice in Berlin on Saturday, is set to make his 100th Champions League appearance.

“We showed from the very first minute that we are here to win,” said Lewandowski in Berlin. “Now we can focus on Tuesday.”

The Poland star has already scored five goals in three European games this season.

He netted twice in both the 3-0 win at Barcelona and the 5-0 home rout of Dynamo Kiev before scoring again in the 4-0 romp against Benfica in Lisbon two weeks ago.

Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who missed the win in Portugal after testing positive for COVID-19, is expected to be back on the bench after spending 14 days at home in isolation.

Mueller described their listless cup performance at Gladbach as the worst he has witnessed in 13 years playing for Bayern.

But Nagelsmann’s assistant, Dino Toppmoeller, believes Mueller is playing some of the best football of his distinguished career.

The Germany international has scored six times in 16 appearances for Bayern this season, adding 11 assists.

“Thomas is a very important player for us with a lot of experience and in games like this, you need leaders like Thomas,” said Toppmoeller.

Barcelona in limbo for pivotal game against Dynamo Kiev

MADRID — Barcelona go into the biggest game of their season so far against Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday without the previous coach and still waiting for the next one to arrive.

Barca President Joan Laporta said on Friday he should have sacked Ronald Koeman sooner, that the club had been “dangerously drifting” and the situation was “unsustainable”.

Xavi Hernandez is expected to be Koeman’s successor and the return of one of the club’s greatest ever players, from the iconic team of Pep Guardiola, will be hugely popular with both the players and Barcelona supporters.

Yet, removing Koeman days before the trip to Kiev looks like a gamble, not least because it assumes the team had a worse chance of winning under him than they do now under interim coach Sergi Barjuan.

“In principle, Sergi will be on the bench in Kiev,” said Laporta.

After deciding to wait in the summer and then again last month, Laporta might have held off another week until the international break, when a two-week hiatus would have offered more space to appoint a replacement.

Instead, Barcelona will have faced Alaves, Dynamo and perhaps Celta Vigo without either Koeman or the new coach, who is expected to be Xavi even if his current club Al Sadd appear keen to offer some resistance.

After losing both of their opening games 3-0 to Bayern Munich and Benfica, Barcelona gave themselves hope with a scrappy 1-0 win over Dynamo at home last time out.

But another victory in the reverse fixture remains crucial, given Barca will finish the group stage at home to Benfica and then away at Bayern Munich, when few would expect them to pick up anything other than a defeat.

If they fail to get out of Group E and come third, Barcelona would have to win the Europa League to make up for the prize money lost.

All of which puts a lot of responsibility on Barjuan, the former Barcelona defender who played more than 200 times for the club and was given his debut by Johan Cruyff.

‘Club man’

“We have Sergi, who is a club man and knows the system,” said Laporta.

“He was part of the best teams in the history of Barca like the Dream Team and he understands our philosophy.

“The philosophy is clear: a style of football that has given us the most success. Sergi knows this squad in depth and will be able to work with it.”

Barjuan’s coaching career has been largely underwhelming, with his Barca B team sitting 11th, 12 points behind the league leaders in their competition.

He picked a starting line-up for the 1-1 draw with Alaves on Saturday that retained many of the ideas of Koeman, with Sergino Dest starting again in the front three, Eric Garcia in central defence and Oscar Mingueza at right back.

There were familiar problems too, including a lack of creativity, confidence and clinical finishing.

“It is difficult to change things in a short time,” said Barjuan on Friday.

“But the style is non-negotiable. We are finding the formula to be more authoritative and be protagonists with the ball.”

Laporta’s hope will be removing Koeman, and perhaps even just the prospect of Xavi, could give the players a lift.

When he addressed the squad last week, he told the players the onus was on them to spark the revival.

The irony is some of the older players, whose form and wages have been so heavily scrutinised in recent months, will now be relied upon to step up at a key juncture in the season.

“At Barca we like to have the ball and to have depth,” said Laporta. “Cruyff taught us that. We want spectacular football, but also to win.”
