11th International Geological Conference kicks off, highlights natural resources, investment opportunities

AMMAN — Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Tuesday in Amman attended the opening of the 11th International Geological Conference and the 10th East Mediterranean Geology Conference.

Kharabsheh stressed the increasing significance of the sector, particularly in light of contemporary challenges related to food security, water, and energy, as well as the energy transition and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 

He highlighted the government's growing interest in the mining sector, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

The minister stressed the importance of properly utilising and managing natural resources to address environmental challenges facing humanity. 

Kharabsheh underscored the need for scientific research and international cooperation, and following successful global experiences that could find innovative solutions to these challenges.

He also noted that some countries have achieved "significant" successes despite lacking natural resources, underscoring the importance of creative thinking and innovation in overcoming challenges.

Kharabsheh pointed to the role of the Economic Modernisation Vision in enhancing the mining sector within the framework of high-value industries, contributing to economic development, increasing GDP, and creating jobs. 

President of the Jordanian Geologists Association Khaled Shawabkeh said that the event aligns with His Majesty's vision to enhance the national strategy for the mining and energy sectors, noting that the conference aims to highlight natural resources and available investment opportunities.

He added that the conference would address key topics related to disaster management, water resources, climate change, and seismic activity, alongside over 120 specialised research papers in geology and environmental sciences.

Shawabkeh also highlighted the significant contributions of Jordanian geologists in discovering various mineral ores, stressing the importance of establishing the Jordanian Geological Survey Commission as part of the Economic Modernisation Vision outcomes.

Secretary-General of the Arab Geologists Union and President of the Union of Iraqi Geologists Saad Obeid said that the event presents an opportunity to exchange expertise and build bridges of cooperation among researchers and scientists. 

The conference features the participation of concerned ministers from various countries, academics and researchers representing local and international universities and research centres, who will discuss topics related to various geology and environmental disciplines.
