Area of licensed buildings drops by 12% in January-July period of 2024 – DoS

AMMAN — The total area of licensed buildings in the Kingdom in the first seven months of 2024 reached some 4.62 million square metres, compared to 5.25 million square metres during the same period last year, marking a decrease of 12 per cent. 

The monthly report of the Department of Statistics (DoS) released on Sunday showed that the total number of building permits issued in the Kingdom in the January-July period of 2024 was 12,614, compared to 13,679 permits during the same period of 2023, a decline of 7.8 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Regarding the purpose of the permits, the licensed area for residential purposes amounted to 3.69 million square metres by the end of July, compared to 4.43 million square metres during the same period in 2023, marking a drop of 16.7 per cent. 

Licensed areas for non-residential purposes reached 934,000 square metres, compared to 823,000 square metres during the same period in 2023, recording an increase of 13.5 per cent.

According to the report, licensed areas for residential purposes accounted for 79.8 per cent of the total licensed building area, while 20.2 per cent were for non-residential purposes.

By region, the central region accounted for 67.4 per cent of the total licensed building area in the Kingdom, registering a slight decrease of 0.2 per cent. 

The northern region’s share was 23 per cent, down by 4.6 per cent, while the southern region made up 9.6 per cent, an increase of 11.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2023.

In July alone, 2,417 building permits were issued, and the licensed building area reached 843,000 square metres, compared to 741,000 square metres in the same month of 2023, marking an increase of 13.8 per cent.
