Area of licensed buildings drops by 11.1% in January-August period of 2024 – DoS

AMMAN — The total area of licensed buildings in the Kingdom in the first eight months of 2024 reached some 5.48 million square metres, compared to 6.16 million square metres during the same period last year, marking a decrease of 11.1 per cent.

The monthly report of the Department of Statistics (DoS) released on Sunday showed that the total number of building permits issued in the Kingdom in the January-August period of 2024 was 14,948, compared to 16,121 permits during the same period of 2023, a decline of 7.3 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Regarding the purpose of the permits, the licensed area for residential purposes amounted to 4.4 million square metres by the end of August, compared to 5.17 million square metres during the same period in 2023, marking a drop of 14.9 per cent.

Licensed areas for non-residential purposes reached 1.08 million square metres, compared to one million square metres during the same period in 2023, recording an increase of 8 per cent.

According to the report, licensed areas for residential purposes accounted for 80.3 per cent of the total licensed building area, while 19.7 per cent were for non-residential purposes.

By region, the central region accounted for 68.3 per cent of the total licensed building area in the Kingdom, registering a decrease of 2.7 per cent.

The northern region’s share was 22.3 per cent, down by 10.0 per cent, while the southern region made up 9.4 per cent, an increase of 8 per cent compared to the same period in 2023.

In August alone, the licensed building area reached 853,000 square metres, compared to 843,000 square metres in July of 2024, marking an increase of 1.2 per cent.
