Kingdom earns praise for Human Rights commitment in UPR Review

AMMAN — The Kingdom earned international acclaim for its engagement with the UPR, Director of the Prime Ministry’s Human Rights Department Khalil Abdallat said on Thursday.

The press briefing held at the Ministry of Government Communication, mainly discussed the recommendations of the fourth the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

The UPR is designed to support and expand the promotion and protection of the human rights situation on the ground.

Abdallat also pointed out that “Jordan’s engagement with the UPR process reflects its commitment to upholding human rights standards, alongside advancing the political, economic, and administrative reforms”.

Abdallat added that, in conjunction with the briefing, the ratification of resolutions and recommendations of the United Nations Human Rights Council was taking place.

During the discussion of Jordan’s engagement with the UPR in Geneva, the Kingdom won international praise for its explicit efforts aimed to improve the human rights situation and to fulfil its human rights obligations.

Furthermore, he said that over 100 countries have given around 279 recommendations to Jordan, of which the Kingdom accepted 204 which makes up around 73 per cent of the total recommendations.

The recommendations Jordan accepted mainly tackled legal and legislative concerns, civil and political rights, as well as, economic, social and cultural rights, and the rights of women, children, people with disabilities and refugees.
