AMMAN —  Deputising for HRH Crown Prince Hussein, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Nayef Fayez attended the official ceremony celebrating Madaba winning the title of Arab Tourism Capital for 2022, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. During the ceremony, attended by President of the Arab Tourism Organisation Bandar Bin Fahd Al Fahid, ministers, ambassadors and heads of a number of associations in Madaba, Fayez noted that the number of visitors in the first half of 2022 exceeded 1.9 million, expecting tourism revenues to reach JD1.5 billion for the same period.

Madaba, which features many archaeological sites, is one of the most important governorates on the Jordanian, Arab and international tourism map, he said. Madaba’s win will contribute to attracting projects to it, he said.

Events and celebrations in Madaba have started since the beginning of 2022 and will continue until the end of the year. In turn, Al Fahid said that Madaba obtained the title of Capital of Arab Tourism for 2022 after meeting all the required criteria. He added that the coronavirus pandemic caused great losses in the tourism sector, adding that people should remain optimistic in regard to the sector’s return to normal.
