AMMAN — Jordan’s policy relating to refugee crises stems from “firm national principles and moral and humanitarian responsibilities”, Interior Minister Tawfiq Halalmeh said on Sunday.

Speaking during the opening of the building of Syrian Refugees Affairs Department (SRAD), the minister said that the international community should shoulder its responsibilities towards refugees and help Jordan in this arena.

Highlighting the Kingdom’s efforts towards supporting refugees, Halalmeh said that Jordan has been contributing a large portion of its resources to cover refugees needs, highlighting the difficult economic conditions the Kingdom is experiencing.

The minister called on donor countries to provide sufficient support to the Jordan Response Plan (JRP) to the Syrian refugee crisis for the years 2020-2022, which includes vital sectors, notably education, water, social protection, justice, energy, transport among others, the Jordan News agency, Petra, reported.

During the ceremony, Halalmeh lauded the UNHCR’s supportive role to Jordan’s efforts  in hosting refugees, mainly sharing the Kingdom’s response with various countries worldwide.

UNHCR Representative in Jordan Dominik Bartsch commended the cooperation between the UN agency and the ministry, expressing appreciation for the eased measures taken to address refugees needs immediately.

Public Security Directorate (PSD) Director Maj. Gen. Hussein Hawatmeh said that the new building will allow the SRAD to provide services according to the highest standards the PSD adheres to.
