AMMAN — The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (UN Women) to boost gender equality and women empowerment.

The memo aims at developing women institutions, responding to women’s needs in the security field and raising awareness about women’s contributions in the armed forces, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The memo was signed by Director of JAF’s Planning and Organisation Department Brig. Gen. Abdullah Hunaiti and the UN Women Jordan Representative Ziad Sheikh. Hunaiti said that the memo is an opportunity to bolster education and training cooperation between the JAF and UN Women to achieve gender equality, adding that the JAF has achieved a lot in this field since the last century.

Sheikh said that women in the JAF play a vital role in maintaining stability as they participate in the UN Peacekeeping Forces. Women Military Affairs Adminstration Chief Lt. Col. Maha Nasser stressed the importance of “strong” cooperation between UN Women and the JAF regarding awareness raising and training.
