AMMAN — Police on Thursday said they have launched a probe into two murders that occurred during brawls between members of the same family in Amman and Ramtha earlier in the day.

A 50-year-old man was killed in a town in Ramtha, some 90km north of Amman, on Thursday morning during a brawl between members of the same tribe, Public Security Department Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

The brawl began following a fight between children from the same family while buying bread, a senior official source said.

“The victim and other members from the same family went to check the matter, and a brawl started between them as a result,” the senior official source said.

The victim received multiple bruises on his head and chest and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, the source added.

An autopsy is expected to be performed in the next few days by pathologist Ali Shotar at the Irbid National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

Police rounded up several suspects, and gendarmerie forces were called in to the town to contain the situation and prevent further escalations, according to the senior source.

Meanwhile, a man was reportedly stabbed and killed in downtown Amman following a brawl between cousins, according to Sartawi.

“No one has been arrested so far in connection with the stabbing death of the young man,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The official added that the motive behind the brawl is still unknown to investigators.
