AMMAN — The Jordanian-Syrian Joint Committee for Combating Drug Smuggling across the Syrian Borders into the Kingdom on Sunday held its inaugural meeting, following the consultative Amman-hosted meeting held on May 1.

The meeting was chaired on the Jordanian side by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti and Director of the General Intelligence Department (GID) Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni. Syria was represented by Gen. Ali Mahmoud Abbas, Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Minister of Defence, and Maj. Gen. Hussam Luqaa, Director of General Intelligence, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation to counter the pressing threats posed by drug trafficking, the sources of its production and the smuggling networks operating across the borders into Jordan.

They also discussed the necessary measures to combat these illicit activities, recognising the escalating threat they pose to the entire region.

During Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi’s visit to Syria on July 3, the relevant parties decided to hold the inaugural meeting of the committee in Amman.
