AMMAN — The Education Ministry will ensure that public schools oblige their students to wear uniforms as of the next scholastic year, an official said Monday.

The decision was taken during a meeting Education Minister Mohammad Thneibat held with education directors, where he directed them to ensure that both boys and girls wear the uniform, Education Ministry Spokesperson Walid Jallad said.

Instructions on wearing uniforms have always been in force and were never frozen, he said, but some students have neglected to wear them.

“Male students in the elementary and secondary stages will wear khaki uniforms, while female students in the elementary stage will wear blue uniforms, and those in the secondary stage will wear green ones,” Jallad told The Jordan Times.

He added that girls are also allowed to wear jilbabs (long garment worn by women along with a head scarf), provided that it is either grey or dark blue.

“Female students are generally committed to wearing their uniforms, but boys are not, preferring to wear more fashionable clothes instead,” the spokesperson said.

He noted that there are around 1.85 million students in the Kingdom, around 1.35 million of whom attend public schools, while the rest are enrolled in private, UNRWA and military schools.

Around 1 million public school students are at the elementary stage between the first and 10th grades, Jallad said.
