AMMAN — While off-duty, Second Lieutenant Rami Nofal of the External Patrols, saved an 11-year-old girl from drowning in the King Abdullah Canal in the northern Jordan Valley.

According to a statement from the Public Security Directorate (PSD) on Monday, Nofal was near his home when he heard cries for help from a group of people after the girl fell into the canal.  He immediately jumped into the water and rescued her.

The girl was then taken to Abu Obaida Public Hospital for treatment.

Nofal credited his swimming and diving training from the PSD, as well as his previous experience, which enabled him to save the girl with the help of his father and brother.

The girl was unconscious when she was rescued, he noted.

Commending the PSD personnel for their willingness to help at all times, the girl's mother thanked Nofal for his efforts in saving her daughter and praised his dedication even when he was off duty.

In recognition of his efforts, the PSD Director Maj. Gen. Obaidallah Maaytah, instructed the Director of the Department of External Patrols to honour Nofal.
