AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khalid Hneifat, during a meeting with fish farmers on Sunday said that the ministry is seeking to support the fishing industry and address its challenges, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Hneifat noted that with support, Jordan’s fish imports, which include up to 40,000 tonnes of marine, river and canned fish, will decrease.

With proper support, domestic production will reach 3 per cent of domestic consumption, and nearly 40 per cent of Jordan’s total consumption of freshwater fish, he added.

The agriculture ministry is currently studying proposals to support the development of the sector in hopes of reducing the cost of production and effectively marketing local products.

For their part, the farmers expressed appreciation for the ministry’s cooperation and desire to develop the sector.
