AMMAN — The Ministry of Agriculture and the Association of Fish Breeders and Marine Biology on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding meant to organise the Central Fish Market in Amman and customise it as a trading centre for local fish.

Minister of Agriculture Khalid Hneifat, who signed the agreement, highlighted the ministry's efforts in support of the aquaculture industry, which include granting soft loans, providing guidance and following up on the operations of the Central Fish Market in cooperation with the Greater Amman Municipality, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.  "The official market would serve as a direct marketing platform that preserves the product, quality and prices, and helps the expansion of this sector, which accounts for 5 per cent of local consumption,” Hneifat said.

Head of the Association of Fish Breeders and Marine Biology Mohammed Shahin commended the ministry's efforts that led to the launch of the new market, which will be a direct-to-public sales platform, helping to regulate the local fish sector, control imports and encourage farmers to expand their agricultural practices.
