AMMAN — Agriculture Minister Khalid Hneifat on Thursday suspended licences to import live sheep and halted the shipment of any pending live sheep as of Thursday until further notice.
According to Lawrence Al Majali, the ministry's spokesperson, this decision aligns with the ministry's policy to safeguard domestic production of live sheep, ensure sustainable income for sheep breeders and preserve the livestock sector, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The measure comes in response to the availability of an ample supply of imported sheep that adequately meets the local market's demand for the upcoming Eid Al Adha holiday.
