‘No Syrian aircraft entered Jordanian airspace’

AMMAN – An army official on Wednesday said no Syrian aircraft entered Jordanian airspace, dismissing as baseless the reports carried by some online media outlets.

Earlier Wednesday, some news websites quoted the mayor of Sabha and Subhiyeh village in Mafraq, near the border with Syria, as saying that a Syrian jet fighter violated the Kingdom’s airspace and fired missiles inside Jordanian territory.

But an unnamed source from the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) said in a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the news was completely baseless, and “could cause confusion and rumours that do not serve the country’s interests”.

The JAF source said Syrian warplanes fired missiles at some Syrian villages that are close to the Jordanian border, but did not enter the airspace of Jordan.

“The Jordan Armed Forces have all capabilities to deal with any threat to Jordan’s security and its territories regardless of where they come from,” Petra quoted the source as saying.

The JAF will refer those who published such “false news” that hurt the national security to the State Security Court, the source said, calling on media outlets to seek accuracy when reporting such news by contacting the concerned authorities.
