AMMAN — Two-time Jordanian Olympic swimmer, Samar Nassar, has won one of just six International Olympic Committee (IOC) Women and Sport Awards presented on Friday in Buenos Aires where the Youth Olympics are being hosted this week, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

The awards recognise six role models and advocates who advance women in and through sport, and Nassar won the award for the Asia continent.

Having completed her competitive career, Nassar has remained involved in sport, firstly as a board member of the Jordan Olympic Committee for four years, and then driving forward the Kingdom’s successful hosting of the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

She has continued to lead and has pioneered various socially positive programmes, including establishing football programmes for Syrian refugee girls at the Zaatari camp in Jordan.

Introduced in 2000, the IOC Women and Sport Awards are given to women, men or organisations who have made remarkable contributions to the development, encouragement and reinforcement of women through sport. One World Trophy and five Continental Trophies are awarded every year.
