AMMAN — Awqaf Minister Mohammad Khalaileh, who is also chairman of the Zakat Fund’s board of directors, said on Monday that the fund has thus far provided JD1.2 million in support to the underprivileged and workers whose jobs were suspended in light of the preventive measures taken to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In a press briefing held at the fund’s headquarters, Khalaileh said that financial support and food parcels were offered. Around 10,000 parcels at a cost of JD300,000 were distributed by the fund’s committees around the Kingdom to families in need and daily wage workers who are not working at present.

The minister noted that 49,000 families have benefitted from the work of the committees, noting that the finances designated for the fund’s beneficiaries have been disbursed to 5,000 families prior to the end of March.

He called on all those able to donate to the fund, and urged all citizens to commit to the government’s measures and stay home, only going out in cases of emergencies, Petra added.
