AMMAN — The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on Friday adopted a draft resolution on the war against Gaza.
Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson Sufian Qudah said that the resolution calls for an immediate cessation of all attacks on the Palestinians, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding children, women, youth, teachers and all those involved in education. "It also calls for an end to attacks on Palestinian educational institutions and the prevention of any damage to them."
Qudah said in a statement on Saturday that the resolution reaffirmed the Palestinians' right to education and stressed the need to respect international and humanitarian laws, as well as the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
The resolution also expressed concern over depriving Gaza of water, electricity and relief, and underlined the need to "immediately" take action to safeguard cultural heritage in the besieged enclave from further damage, in line with UNESCO's relevant agreements, he noted.
Qudah said that the resolution, submitted by the Arab Group at UNESCO, was the result of diplomatic efforts within the organisation.
The resolution was adopted by a majority of 96 votes out of the 137 countries participating in the voting on the resolution.
