AMMAN — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled on Sunday to visit Jordan and Egypt.
UN Spokesperson Farhan Haq said that Guterres’ "Ramadan Solidarity Tour" this year comes "during turbulent times, due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza".
During his visit, Guterres will call for a humanitarian ceasefire, with a special focus on Gaza and Sudan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Haq noted that Guterres will visit UNRWA facilities that provide services to Palestinian refugees in Jordan and will also partake in a Ramadan iftar with Palestinian refugees and UN staff in Amman, Haq noted.
During his visit to Egypt, Guterres will also participate in a Ramadan iftar with Sudanese refugees who have been displaced due to the persistent conflict in their home country, according to the UN website.
Guterres is anticipated to emphasise the importance of peace and stability, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, and will call for all parties to adhere to a cessation of hostilities.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General will engage in discussions with Egyptian officials to address regional challenges and promote cooperation in conflict resolution, the website added.
