UK ambassador ‘regrets’ execution of 11 convicts

AMMAN — UK Ambassador to Jordan Peter Millett issued a statement on Sunday expressing “regret” over the government’s decision to implement the death penalty and execute 11 convicts.

“I regret Jordan’s decision to execute 11 individuals earlier today and we urge Jordan to put in place a moratorium on any further use of the death penalty,” Millett said in the statement.

“The UK opposes the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle. We consider that its use undermines human dignity, that there is no conclusive evidence that it has any value as a deterrent, and that any miscarriage of justice is irreversible and irreparable,” he added.
