Tamkeen urges Labour Ministry to ease procedures for illegal workers

AMMAN — Tamkeen for Legal Aid and Human Rights has urged the Labour Ministry to ease procedures for guest workers to rectify their status.

Tamkeen criticised a circular recently issued by the ministry, under which guest workers who are under security restriction or facing a lawsuit that is yet to be examined by court are not allowed to rectify their status.

Tamkeen said the circular is in violation of the government’s decision to grant illegal workers a two-month grace period — which started on February 25 — to get their papers in order.

The centre said the period usually ends with many of them not benefiting from it, especially domestic helpers.
